Ronald ‘Jack’ Birchfield

LANSING, Mich. — Ronald “Jack” Birchfield died at Grandhaven Living Center in Lansing, MI, on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at the age of 75 after a brief illness and a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Jack will be remembered as a strong-willed, hard-working man who loved God, his family, hunting, and his “Almost Heaven” West Virginia. He will also be remembered for his sense of humor, his banjo playing, his Bluegrass music, and his love of a good game of rummy, but even more so for his love of others and his willingness to help anyone who needed it: family, friend, or stranger.

Born in Odd, West Virginia, on March 23, 1936, to his now deceased parents Girthel and Bryant Birchfield, Jack began driving a logging truck at the tender age of 16. He was a proud 48-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324. He acquired his love of hunting from his father and his devotion to family from his mother, both of whom he revered. He was introduced to the church by his Baptist minister father and in later years attended the Durand Church of the Nazarene in Durand, Michigan, where he and his precious Stella had settled after many years of moving from state to state. Stella predeceased Jack on November 23, 2007, after 49 years of marriage.

Jack was treasured and will be missed by his four children: Jacqueline (Mark) Dalley of Owosso, MI; Rhonda (Mike) Steffes of Portland, MI; Sandra Payne of Dawson, West Virginia; and Ron (Kim) Birchfield of Sheffield Lake, Ohio. He was devoted to and adored by his ten grandchildren: Natalie, Craig, Timothy, Lyndsay, Joshua, Kelly, Travis, Eli, Michelle, and Nathan. In 2010 he became a great-grandfather to Hannah Mae. Uncle Jack will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, just as Jack will be missed by Stella’s siblings, his Flanagan family.

Jack has one living sibling, his sister Jan Greer of Arizona. His faith sustained him through the loss of his six other siblings, his brothers Ross, Bill, and Doss and his sisters Hazel, Drema, and, more recently, his beloved Imojean.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 5, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Meadow Grove Baptist Church in Dawson, WV, with Pastor Mike McCarty from the Durand Church of the Nazarene officiating. A visitation will take place on Sunday, December 4, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smathers Funeral Chapel in Rainelle. Jack will be buried in the Lowry Cemetery, Spring Dale, next to Stella and near his cherished in-laws Winfred and Fay Flanagan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jack’s name to Grandhaven Living Center (3145 W. Mt. Hope Ave., Lansing, MI 48911) for the quality and loving care of others with Alzheimer’s disease.
