Margaret Elsie Adkins

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS — Proverbs 31:10, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Margaret Elsie Adkins, 79, of Green Sulphur Springs was called home Friday, October 5, 2012.

Born April 5, 1933, at Blue Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Cora Littlepage Bryant.

She was a member of the Rupert Church of God. Margaret was a wonderful wife and mother, a caregiver to all who knew her. She loved to go to church and quilt, could churn butter and was well-known for her chicken dumplings.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Noah Adkins; a granddaughter Rachael Hamrick; great-grandson Dakota Hamrick; 2 sons Joseph Bryant and Charles Edward Adkins; 2 sisters Lucille Adkins and Annie Cook and 1 brother Billy Bryant.

Those left to cherish precious memories are her sons Earl Adkins and Ernest Adkins and wife Andrea, all of Green Sulphur Springs; 2 daughters Elby Bryant and husband Forest Junior of Blue Sulphur Springs and Joyce Lyons and husband Larry of Green Sulphur Springs; 2 brothers Herman Bryant and wife Audrey of Springdale and Daniel Bryant of Blue Sulphur Springs; a sister Helen Arlene Bryant of Green Sulphur Springs; a daughter-in-law Rebecca Adkins of Green Sulphur Springs; and she will be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, October 8, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Frank Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the McElhenney Cemetery at Grassy Meadows.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons Phillip Bryant, Benjamin Hamrick, Ernest Adkins, II, Jacob Adkins, Johnathan Phillips, Jordan Phillips and Austin Adkins.

Friends may call Sunday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis Brown

OCEANA — Phyllis Brown, 83, of Oceana, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, October 4, 2012, at her home.

She was born August 12, 1929, in Logan County, WV, a daughter of the late Robert Henry and Janetta Hazel Thomas Jarrell.

She attended the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church since June 10, 1949; she was a Sunday school teacher for 40-some years, food chairman for many years, and a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 110 Pineville, WV. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by husband of 56 years William Hurley Brown; a brother Charley Jarrell; a sister Reba Crabtree; and brother-in-law Bob Murray.

Survivors include a son Damon (Rhonda) Brown of Murrells Inlet, SC; a daughter Diana Lynn (Harold Gene) Tracy of Oak Hill; two sisters Freda (Earl) Tomblin of Chapmanville, and Sue Murray of Hagerstown, MD; a brother-in-law George Crabtree of Davin; three grandchildren Christy Brown, Billy Brown, and Harold William (Melissa) Tracy; six great-grandchildren Tyler Brown, Alexis Brown, Anthony Brown, Abigail Brown, Courtney David Tracy, Hayden Tracy, and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2012, at the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, Kopperston, WV, with Rev. Jerry Cook and Pastor Jim Hamrick officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the church.

Billy G. Davidson

AMIGO — Billy Gene Davidson, 67, of Amigo passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness.

Born September 27, 1945, at Harlingen, TX, he was the son of Bernice Clark Davidson Amson of Rosharon, TX, and the late Atkinson Davidson.

Billy was a former automotive mechanic and in his leisure he enjoyed gardening, collecting guns, hunting, fishing, and especially tinkering around working on things.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Vietnam Era where he served on the carrier ship USS America.

In addition to his father he is also preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Knight.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Alice Davidson; two daughters, Lynn McClaugherty and her husband, Billy, of Crab Orchard and Lori Eskins and her husband, Brian, of Sophia; three sons, Mark Davidson and his wife, Willa, of Sophia, Billy Davidson of Sophia and his fiancée, Christy, and Tracy Davidson of Ohio; seven grandchildren, PFC Kevin Eskins, Corey Davidson, Nathan McClaugherty, Jacob Eskins, Ethan McClaugherty, Haydan McClaugherty, and Brenna Davidson; two sisters, Joann Hignight and Karen Cockrell both of Rosharon, TX; and his mother-in-law, Joyce Graham of Helen.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2012, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

WAITEVILLE — Mr. Bennie Isiah Eppling, 85, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 5, 2012.

The family will receive friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Broyles-McGuire Funeral home in Union. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at New Zion Church in Waiteville, with the Rev. Jim Conyers officiating.

HOLDEN — Thelma Gares, 79, of Holden, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012.

DUDLEY, N.C. — Charles Edward Garten, 63, of Dudley passed away Monday morning.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Doug Bartlett and Pastor Glenn Mills officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Vennia May Mock

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Vennia May Mock, 75, formerly of Beckley, passed away on October 2, 2012, in Poughkeepsie, NY, after a short illness.

Vennia was born in Beckley on Sept. 8, 1937, to the late James and Cathearn Dunkley Mock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Edith and brothers Charles, Mack and George.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her daughter Theresa and husband Scott Sr. of Hyde Park, NY, son James of Texas, grandchildren Kayla and husband Jordan, Kersten, Scott Jr., and Haley, great-grandchildren Jordan Jr. and Sophia, brothers, Denver Mock and wife Maureen of Beacon, NY, Elmer Mock and wife Pat of Wappingers Falls, NY, Robert Mock of New York, Frank Mock Sr. of Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Melvin ‘Mel’ Anderson Smalley

MOUNT HOPE — Melvin Anderson Smalley, 77, of Mt. Hope, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

Born October 10, 1934, in Kanawha County, he was the son of the late Ralph and Alwilda Vogt Smalley.

Mel attended South Charleston High School, the Detroit Diesel School in Detroit, Michigan, Allison Transmission Tech in Indiana, and Stone Setting School in Cincinnati, OH. He was a Master Goldsmith and Stone Setter with Lilly’s Crown Jewelers. He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Maple Fork Baptist Church.

Mel served his country proudly in the United States Air Force. He enjoyed being a creative handyman and performing restorations.

In addition to his parents Mel was preceded in death by two brothers, Talbert and Raymond, and two sisters, Janet Rhyne and Genevieve Clay.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Elsie Smalley; two daughters, Dewana Tidwell and husband, Leonard “Rip,” of Jasper, Alabama, and Jodie Addis and husband, Steve, of Culloden, WV; four grandchildren, Jason and Jeremy Combs, and Christopher and Sarah Karnes; three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Owen, and Liam Combs; a brother, Eugene Smalley and wife, Alene, of South Charleston.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 8, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Bowyer of the Maple Fork Baptist Church officiating. Friends may gather at 6 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.

James Joseph Zeller Jr.

James Joseph Zeller, Jr., 77, of Beckley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 4, 2012.

He was a devoted husband to his wife, Delores Cawley Zeller, for 14 years.

He had been with the Miami Police Department, CSI Cover Agent, a photographer, and a repair man.

In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Colleen of Florida; two sons, Mark and Matthew of Georgia; and six grandsons.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Steven Beverly officiating. Mr. Zeller will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
