LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Ruth E. Hedrick Arnold, 93, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012.

Jo Ann Virginia Berger

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. — Ms. Jo Ann Virginia Berger, 72, of Capitol Heights, MD, formerly of Beckley, WV, died Thursday, September 27, 2012, in Washington Hospital Center.

Born June 12, 1940, in Helen, WV, she was the daughter of the late Huvester and Rovena Medley Berger.

She was a retired Budget Analyst.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Huvester Jr. and Steven, and sister, Brenda.

Those left to cherish precious memories are her daughter, Carla Boney-Palmer (Chad), grandchildren, Julian Boney, Chad II and Collia Berger, all of Brandywine, MD; Cornell Boney, companion of thirty-eight years, of Capitol Heights, MD; sister, Laverne Berger of Beckley, WV; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor, 748 So. Fayette St., Beckley, with Evangelist Marie Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral parlor.

OCEANA — Phyllis Brown, 83, of Oceana, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012.

Vernon Dale Cales

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Vernon Dale Cales, 61, of Cleveland, formerly of Hix, was called home by God at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012, following an accidental fall.

Born December 22, 1950, at Hinton, he was a son of the late James Lacy and Euna Alice Richmond Cales.

Vernon lived on Hix mountain for 12 years. Then, following the death of his father he moved to Cleveland, where he resided with his sister until he was called home.

Preceding him in death include one brother, Ernest “Bud” Cales; one sister, Barbara Anna Patterson; and two brothers-in-law, Nelson Patterson and Edward Henry Bennett.

Those left to cherish his memory include one sister, Mildred Maxine Bennett of Cleveland; two brothers, James Buford Cales and wife Virginia of Hinton and Nilon Hunter Cales and wife Ann of Sandstone; a very special nephew, Nicholas Leon Bennett, with whom he spent a great deal of his time. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012, at Tempa Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Alderson Cemetery at Hix. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral parlors and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Great-nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Calvin Eugene ‘Cookie’ Cook Jr.

RAINELLE — Calvin Eugene “Cookie” Cook Jr., 41, of Rainelle went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 1, 2012.

Born July 10, 1971, in Raleigh County, he was a tractor-trailer driver and a salesman. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Reva Bennett Kashola.

He is survived by his wife, Amanda L. Cook; mother Brenda Reed and stepfather, Charlie Reed; a son, Josiah A. Cook; a daughter, Riyan Megan; a brother, Shannon Dalton; granddaughter, Gabrielliah; special niece, Kaylee Alls; special cousin, Steve Pugh, and many other cousins. He will be sadly missed by family and a host of friends.

By his personal wishes, he is to be cremated and a private family gathering held at a later date.

AMIGO — Billy Gene Davidson, 67, of Amigo, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012.

Marjorie Leona Nelson

VICTOR — Marjorie Leona Nelson, 91, of Victor, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at her residence, following a long illness.

She was born June 24, 1921, in Jodie, W.Va.; she was the daughter of the late John Leslie Steele and Mary Alice McGraw Steele.

She was a homemaker, a Christian and a wonderful mother.

Marjorie is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Timmy and Vivian Steele of Victor.

Graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012, with Preacher Jack Eades officiating. Burial will follow there in the cemetery. There will not be any calling hours.

James Hedrick Pierce Sr.

James Hedrick Pierce Sr., 83, of Beckley, passed away on October 2, 2012, at his residence following a long illness.

Born October 4, 1928, in Beckley, James was the son of the late William G. and Gertrude Mae Lykins Pierce.

Jim attended Woodrow Wilson High School before joining the United States Navy. Jim served on the USS Ashtabula and the USS AJAX; he was a machinist mate. Jim was proud to be a veteran and always shared his love for the Navy and his country that he dearly loved. After returning home he worked as a diesel mechanic at Beckley Coal, Vecellio and Grogan and Murrows Transport in NC.

Jim loved working on his Ford, “Ole Blue,” and watching John Wayne movies and spending time with his family, whom he loved very much. He was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church, Beckley.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Sam, Ben, George, and Junior Pierce; his sisters, Pauline Pierce and Ruth Mckay, and his black lab companions Polly and Dixie.

Those left to cherish Jim’s memory include his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret Pierce; his sons, James H. Pierce Jr. and wife Sherri of Grandview, Timothy R. Pierce and his wife Nancy of Lexington, NC; his daughter, Trina Griffith and husband Steve of Beckley; his grandsons, Jay Pierce and his companion Violet of Kimberly, Casey Pierce and his wife Crystal of Coal City, Philip Griffith and his wife Emily of Morgantown, and Justin Massie and his wife Chrystal of Itmann; his granddaughters, Andrea and Isabella Pierce of Lexington, N.C.; two great-granddaughters, McKenzie Pierce of Coal City and Gabby Massie of Beckley.

Funeral services for Jim will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Adkins of the United Methodist Temple officiating with a very special Eulogy by dear family friend Brian Riffe. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Philip Griffith, Casey Pierce, Justin Massie, George Pierce II, Richard Wriston and Rick Hutchens.

Jim’s family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Edna Ruth Sparks Repass

OCEANA — Edna Ruth Sparks Repass, better known as “Sue” to family and friends, 78, of Oceana, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2012, in the comfort of her home due to a short battle with cancer.

She was born August 19, 1934, in McComas, W.Va., a daughter of the late Joseph Wattie and Hazel Gertrude Sparks. She was one of fourteen children, three sisters and ten brothers. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Archie Repass; three brothers Elmer Sparks and wife Opal, Donnie Sparks and wife Sandy, and Carl Sparks; two sisters Evelyn Repass and husband Bill, Mildred Jean Dillo; an infant daughter Connie Jean; and a very dear and close friend Edith Hopkins.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son Jackie Ray (Phyllis) Repass of Surfside Beach, S.C.; and one daughter Kay (Billy Gene) Rose of Oceana; five grandchildren Pamela Jean “PJ” (Ed) Murphy of Apex, N.C., Courtney Repass (Jon) Martin of Glen View, Kelly (Kerrina) Rose of Baileysville, Gregory Rose and companion Robin Massey of Bolt, and Jacqui Rose (Ryan) Hill of Pipestem; eight great-grandchildren Mattie and Georgia Murphy, Joana and James Martin, Hannah and Colton Rose, Nick and Tom Forren, Isaac, Nathan, Caleb, and Callie Hill; seven brothers Joe (Mary) Sparks of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob (Sharon) Sparks of Newborn, Tenn., Douglas (Pam) Sparks of Abingdon, Va., Ricky (Maxine) Sparks of Peterstown, Fred (Francis) Sparks of Princeton, Stanley (Peggy) Sparks of Beckley, Dean (Annetta) Sparks of Princeton; one sister Janie Stanger of Bluefield; two brothers-in-law Eugene Dillo of Fayetteville, N.C., and Robert Repass of Oceana; two sisters-in-law Joyce Sparks of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and a very special and dear sister-in-law Ann Santmyer of Oceana; a special niece better known as her second daughter Carol Repass (Gerald) Duncan of Kopperston and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends and neighbors (three special neighbors Debbie, Rene and Sharon).

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Melissa White officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, at the funeral home.

Beulah Melissa Rollins

Beulah Melissa Rollins, 85, of Beckley, formerly of Putnam County, returned to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

Born April 13, 1927, in Liberty, W.Va., she was the daughter of Franklin and Hazel Bowling.

While a retired housekeeper by trade, she will always be remembered as a loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. Beulah was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Beckley.

Those left to celebrate the life and memory of Beulah include daughters Ramona Dent of Nitro, Mary Scott and Husband Don of Leon, and sons Rick Rollins and wife Joyce, Mike Rollins and wife Jody, both of Beckley. Also celebrating her life are seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren: Phil Bowling of Ohio, Mark Adkins and his wife Denise of Burlington, KY, Carrie Bell and husband Joe of Taylor Mills, KY, Ricky Rollins and wife Alexis of Beckley, Stacey Myers and husband Mike of Charlton Heights, Joe Rollins and wife Brandi from Daniels and Joshua Rollins also of Beckley. Beulah also leaves behind three sisters, Myrtle Priddy, Othenia Higginbotham, and Ruth Thornton, all of Putnam County.

Beulah will be reunited with her husband of 59 years, Denver, who passed away in 2010. Also awaiting Beulah’s arrival will be her parents, Franklin and Hazel, sisters Lola Persinger, Dorthea Thronton, Carol Scott, Violet Thornton, her brothers Woodrow, Lawrence, and Herman, and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Dent.

The family would like to extend a special offer of gratitude to Dr. Ayne Amjad and staff, the staff of Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital third floor and ICU, and her loving caregivers, Jamie Holtzapel and family, Chelsea Avis and family, Lisa Webb and family, Betty Dirickson, Monique and Anna, and the entire staff of Raleigh County Commission on Aging.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the First Church of the Nazarene on 607 Johnstown Road in Beckley with Pastor Richard Wagoner officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens of Beckley.

Beulah’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Nancy Jo Thornburg-Scott Thorn

OAK HILL — Nancy Jo Thornburg-Scott Thorn, 79, of Oak Hill, died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the home of her daughter Linda Williams in Oak Hill.

Born November 18, 1932, at Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Pansy Tutterow Thornburg.

Nancy was of the Protestant faith. She was a homemaker, a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and a member of the Hampshire County Homemaker’s Club. She loved gardening and nature.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis M. Scott; second husband, Troy Thorn; and two sisters, Margie Allen and Mabel Cranford.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Scott Painter and husband, Chuck, of Huntington, Linda Scott Williams and husband, Ben, of Oak Hill and Kathy Scott Boyer of Oak Hill; four sisters, Joyce Bellew of Barberton, Ohio, Ola Mae Hall of Thomasville, N.C., Remona Baxley of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Betty Treadway of Akron, Ohio; and two brothers, Bill Thornburg of Beaver Dam, Va., and Wallace Thornburg of Fayetteville.

She is also survived by a grandson, Scott Painter of Huntington; two granddaughters, Courtney Urbach of Littleton, Colo., and Lindsay Williams of Daytona Beach, Fla., two great-grandchildren, Preston Williams of Oak Hill and Cassidy Urbach of Littleton, and her precious dog, Chloe.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Dr. Charles D. Miller officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Chuck Painter, Wallace Thornburg, Ben F. Williams Jr., Scott Painter, Bill Thornburg and Fred Williams will serve as pallbearers.

Erma Zickafoose

FLINT, Mich. — Erma Zickafoose, 81, of Flint, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at the Genesys Hospice Care Center, Atlas Twp., MI.

Erma was born August 7, 1931, to parents Loman and Winnie (Fleshman) Crane. She married Eugene Zickafoose, August 1, 1955.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, a daughter, Charlotte Cowell, a son, Ray Crane, and a grandson, Scott Crane.

Surviving are children, Herman Zickafoose, David Zickafoose, and Doris Zickafoose, all of Flint, Mich., nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sisters, Deloris Gwinn of West Virginia, Cam Stevens of Ill., and Carol Hill of Ill., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle, with Rev. Rick Keener officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10 until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
