Leonard Nelson Bennett, 75, of Cool Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Tresa Carol Farley Bowling
Tresa Carol Farley Bowling, age 34, of Daniels, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born on June 5, 1975, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Wayne and Brenda Willis Farley of Shady Spring.
Tresa was a homemaker, and was a loving mother to her children. Tresa was a graduate of Shady Spring High School Class of 1993, and had attended Concord College. For years, she was very involved in cheerleading and different organizations at the high school.
Tresa was a member of the First Baptist Church at Shady Spring. Her inner beauty exceeded her outer beauty, and she was known for her loving and generous heart.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Regina Farley, maternal grandparents, James and Elva Willis; by two aunts, Joan Stephenson and Clara Porter, and three uncles, Chester Willis, Jackie Willis, and James Willis Jr.
Surviving other than her parents include her children, Madison Lilly and Leah Bowling; a brother, Jeremy Farley and his wife Theresa of Hayes, Va.; a sister, Beth Jones and her husband Aaron Jones II of Daniels; her paternal grandfather, Willie Berman Farley Jr. of Shady Spring; a nephew, Ian Jones, and three nieces, Alayna Farley, Allison Farley, and Sarah Garretson. Her mother-in-law, Gayle Bowling of Ghent, and a sister-in-law, Lori Garretson and her husband Shannon of Sullivan; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Delvin D. Elwell Jr. and Mr. Phillip Lilly officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Brian O’Dell, John O’Dell, Gary Bolen, Jeff Carper, Eddie Williams, and Matt Huffman.

DELBARTON — Pamela Browning Fields, 57, of Delbarton, formerly of Verner, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Verner Community Church, Verner, with the Rev. Rodney Robinette, Pastors Walter Grimmett and Ron Acord, and Michael Browning. Burial will be in Browning Cemetery, Verner. Friends may gather with the family after 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Verner Community Church at Verner with a service at 7 p.m.

Pamela Lynn Sanders Galapon
Pamela Lynn Sanders Galapon, age 54, of Glade Springs, Daniels, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at her home following a sudden illness.
Born on September 21, 1955, in Mullens, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Eva Abshire Sanders of Daniels, W.Va., and the late Glenn Sanders.
Mrs. Galapon was a registered nurse, having previously worked with her husband, the late Dr. Perry Galapon, at the Shady Spring Medical Center. She was a graduate of Glen Rogers High School, and West Virginia Tech in 1974.
Mrs. Galapon was a member of the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church for many years. She had made her home at Glade Springs for the past 10 years.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Perry Galapon.
Surviving are her sons: Dr. Philip Galapon and his wife Maggie of Huntington, and Patrick Galapon of Glade Springs; one brother, Greg Sanders of Kopperston; a sister, Lori Accord and her husband Clifford of Kopperston.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, 301 Teel Road, Beckley, with Pastor Ken Killen officiating. Entombment will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Piney Mae Harvey
Piney Mae Harvey, 86, of Forest Hill, died Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Bowers Hospice in Beckley following a several-day illness.
Born August 21, 1923, on Piney Creek in Raleigh Co., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Wellington “Wick” Lilly and Elizabeth “Betty” Farley Lilly.
Mrs. Harvey was the widow of Oris L. Harvey to whom she was married on March 1, 1947. She had resided in Summers Co. most of her life and in the Forest Hill-Indian Mills area for over 50 years. Although she had been in declining health for some time, she was able to reside in her own home until her most recent illness.
Mrs. Harvey was a retired employee of Pipestem State Park and a member of the Bluestone View Primitive Baptist Church at Ellison. She was always interested in her family history and was pleased to tell people that she was a maternal granddaughter of Elder Drewry S. “Simmy” Farley and his wife Minerva Lilly Farley as well as a paternal granddaughter of Samuel “Groundhog Sam” and Nancy Cox Lilly.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by five siblings: Blake Farley, Ernest Lilly, Paul Lilly, Clowney Lilly, and Grace Hatcher; one stepdaughter, Lora May Williams Fio Rita; stepgranddaughter, Donna M. Harvey; and a stepson-in-law, James L. Miller.
She is survived by one son, Edward E. Harvey and wife Althea of Forest Hill; two grandchildren, Stephen Harvey and Mrs. Laura Briggs both of North Carolina; and five great grandchildren; one stepson, Alva Harvey and wife Mary of Hinton; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Joyce Miller of Forest Hill; seven stepgrandchildren and numerous stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Elders Tommy Pack and David Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Drewry Farley Cemetery at Ellison. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Darlene Sue Jackson, age 49, of Beckley, West Virginia, died Thursday, February 4, 2010, unexpectedly at her home.
Born on January 11, 1961, in Beckley, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Bobbie Keaton Jackson of Beckley, W.Va., and the late Charles C. Jackson.
Darlene was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith. She had lived in Beckley most of her life.
Survivors include her son, Paul Charles Jackson of Beckley, W.Va.; 3 grandchildren, Christian Underwood, Dillon and Trinity Jackson; a sister, Ethel Keller of Beckley, W.Va.; 2 brothers, Charles D. Jackson of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and Cecil L. Jackson of Brandywine, W.Va.
Darlene is survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, West Virginia, on Sunday, February 7, 2010, at 3 p.m. (today) with the Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. There will be no visitation.

Earl Eugene Maynus
FAYETTEVILLE — Earl Eugene Maynus, 72, of Fayetteville passed away Thursday, February 4th, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long battle with diabetes.
Born March 23, 1937, at Gallagher, the son of the late Benjamin Harrison Maynus and Ada Mary Atha Maynus. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Maynus and Charles Edd Maynus.
Earl was a retired electrician for the Maple Meadow Mines, where he was a member of the UMWA, and was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Fayetteville. He was a U.S. Army veteran and loved woodworking in his wood shop, where he loved making swings which were sold all over the country. He was a member of the Lafayette Masonic Lodge 57 AF&AM; at Fayetteville.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Barbara Brown Maynus; his children Rena Beth Robinson of Fayetteville, Clarissa “Lisa” Maynus of Fayetteville, and Benjamin Earl Maynus of Richmond, Va.; two granddaughters, Donna Renee Lively of Scarbro and Elissa Rose Riley of Columbus, Ohio; one grandson, Gary Eugene Robinson of Fayetteville; three great-grandsons, Jaeden Seth Morton of Columbus, Ohio, Leslie Thomas Lively, III, and Tyler Morgan Lively, both of Scarbro; a brother, Clarence Kenneth Maynus of Beckley; and a sister, Dorothy Ellen Toombs of Norfolk, Va.
His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 East Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where the funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Justin Seay officiating. Burial will follow with graveside rites by the Lafayette Masonic Lodge 57 AF&AM; in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Mary Elizabeth Schwartzenberg
Mary Elizabeth Schwartzenberg, 86, of MacArthur, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, February 4, 2010. Born August 24, 1923, at Cannelton, she was the daughter of the late Johnson and Josie Fisher Lawrence.
Mary was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School; she was a member and trustee of her beloved church Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church at MacArthur W.Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband who was killed in France in 1944, Walter Edward James, and her second husband, Henry Hewitt, on October 15, 1977, and her third husband, Wade Schwartzenberg, who passed away on August 25, 1996.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Walter “Eddie” James Jr., and his friend Lydia Brown of Warrenton, Va.; a grandson, Shane James, a cousin, Rev. Calvin Perry and his wife Avenelle of Huntington; and special friends and caregivers Alma and David Pack.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Calvin Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

BURNSVILLE — Jean Marie Singleton, 77, of Burnsville (Braxton County), passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Arlie A. Smith
Arlie A. Smith, born April 30, 1916, went home to be with the Heavenly Father on February 5, 2010. Preceding him to the Heavenly Father were his father, William “Bill Henry” Smith, and mother, Ruthie Payne Smith. Five brothers, Jack, William, Johnny, Artie “Joe” and Ira Smith. Also six sisters, Nettie, Martha, Mary, Emma, Barbara, Veda.
Surviving are his wife, Lura Toney Smith, and two daughters, Brenda Smith Goins and her husband Roger Goins, Kay Smith Bigelow all of Oak Hill area. He is survived by four grandchildren, Jon Brian Goins and his wife Belinda, Dawn Elaine Goins, Thomas and Jeremiah Layne Goins of Oak Hill. Also James “Jamie” Bigelow and wife Sherry of Hiton, N.Y. Also three great-grandchildren, Chasity Dawn Thomas, Zachary Bruce Thomas and Jacob Heath Thomas all of Oak Hill area. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Arlie was a WWII veteran serving his country in the 1st Army of the United States Army. He served from April 1942 to the duration, serving through five major battle from the Invasion of Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned home to raise his family by contracting timber for the local mines. After his retirement he enjoyed hunting, gardening and being with his family. He will be missed by all who know this great man and was the last surviving member of his brothers and sisters.
Arlie attended the Lifebridge Assembly of God in Oak Hill.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

W. ‘William’ Hale Watkins
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio — W. (William) Hale Watkins died on February 2, 2010, at the Columbus Alzheimer Care Center where he had resided for two years in a decade-long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Charleston, W.Va., the son of the late Dr. Charles E. and Mary Alice Watkins, he was a 40-year resident of Upper Arlington. He received a B.A. in Political Science from West Virginia University and a J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law. In 1964, he earned an LL.M. (Master of Laws) degree from George Washington University. He was a lifetime Mountaineer fan and a supporter of WVU athletics.
He began his professional career in the litigation division of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. Subsequently, he worked in the legal department at United Fuel Gas Co. in Charleston, W.Va., and completed his professional career as Labor Relations attorney and legal department Senior Attorney at Columbia Gas Corporation in Columbus. Following his retirement in 1994, he worked for several years as a volunteer in the emergency room at Mt. Carmel West Hospital.
His memberships included the state bar associations of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. An avid golfer, he was a member of The Country Club at Muirfield Village and a nonresident member of Pinehurst Country Club and the Bald Head Island Club, both in North Carolina; Upper Arlington Lutheran Church; and Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Brooks Watkins.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie Hess Watkins; son, David and daughter-in-law Pamela; daughter, Nancy Pridgen; and two grandsons, Tyler Pridgen and Michael Watkins, all of Upper Arlington.
Friends may meet family members at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church.

Jason Ray Zandlo, 30, of Beckley passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010.
Born on September 5, 1979, he was the son of Frank and Donna Allen Zandlo.
Jason was employed as a laborer for a landscaping company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was of the Protestant Faith.
Jason was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Emmett Allen; paternal grandfather Joseph Zandlo and paternal grandmother Mary Zandlo.
In addition to his parents, those left to cherish his memory include his sister Melissa Blount and husband Shad of Charleston; niece Kara and nephew Eli; grandmother Mildred Allen of Beckley; and companion Victoria Mattox.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Randy Ledsome officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
