Danny Joe Blake
Danny Joe Blake, age 60, of Princeton, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at his home in Princeton, following a short illness.
Born on March 30, 1949, at Pax, he was the son of the late Richard Lee Blake and Flora Virginia Martin Blake.
Mr. Blake was a former employee of BJW Printing and Central Printing in Beckley, and retired as the owner and operator of Reliable Printing in Bluefield, W.Va. He was also a licensed auctioneer. Mr. Blake was a member of the Painter’s Chapel United Methodist Church at Speedway, W.Va. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, #1606 in Beckley. Mr. Blake had made Princeton his home for the past 15 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Douglas Blake.
Surviving are two sons, Joe Blake and his fiancée Dr. Michelle Postelle of Ghent, and Benjamin Blake of Beckley; a daughter, India Blake of Beckley; a stepson, Shane Janatolia of Princeton, a stepdaughter, Summer Wyatt of Princeton; a brother, Frank Blake and his wife Christine of Oak Hill; and two grandchildren, Tatum Blake and Kylie Mitchell.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Mounts officiating.
There will be no visitation.

Tresa Carol Farley Bowling
Tresa Carol Farley Bowling, age 34, of Daniels, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born on June 5, 1975, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Wayne and Brenda Willis Farley of Shady Spring.
Tresa was a homemaker, and was a loving mother to her children. Tresa was a graduate of Shady Spring High School Class of 1993, and had attended Concord College. For years, she was very involved in cheerleading and different organizations at the high school.
Tresa was a member of the First Baptist Church at Shady Spring. Her inner beauty exceeded her outer beauty, and she was known for her loving and generous heart.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Regina Farley, maternal grandparents, James and Elva Willis; by two aunts, Joan Stephenson and Clara Porter, and three uncles, Chester Willis, Jackie Willis, and James Willis Jr.
Surviving other than her parents include her children, Madison Lilly and Leah Bowling; a brother, Jeremy Farley and his wife Theresa of Hayes, Va.; a sister, Beth Jones and her husband Aaron Jones II of Daniels; her paternal grandfather, Willie Berman Farley Jr. of Shady Spring; a nephew, Ian Jones, and three nieces, Alayna Farley, Allison Farley, and Sarah Garretson. Her mother-in-law, Gayle Bowling of Ghent, and a sister-in-law, Lori Garretson and her husband Shannon of Sullivan; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Delvin D. Elwell Jr. and Mr. Phillip Lilly officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Brian O’Dell, John O’Dell, Gary Bolen, Jeff Carper, Eddie Williams, and Matt Huffman.

MINDEN — Gilbert F. Donelow, 79, of Minden, died on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at CAMC, Memorial Division in Charleston.
Born April 29, 1930, at Lawton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rollie and Hetty Fitzwater Donelow.
Gilbert retired from New River Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA.
A son, Pat; grandson, Chuck Yeary; five sisters, Ethel, Louise, Shirley, Sheila and Wanda; and two brothers, Luther and Sammy, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife, Bonita Kay Fleshman Donelow; 10 children, Linda Lou Donelow of Mount Hope, Brenda Scott of Mount Hope, Floyd Donelow of Mount Hope, Sharon Yeary of Ravenna, Ohio, Drema Kay Jones of Asheville, N.C., Gilbert Louis Donelow of Oak Hill, Patty Treadway of Mount Hope, Joey Donelow of Hilltop, Donna Epling of Mount Hope and Ruth Ann Owens of Minden; stepson, Matthew Fleshman of Minden; three sisters, Charlotte Wheeling of Richmond, Va., Mary Shrewsbury of Ravenna, Ohio, and Martha White of Ravenna; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Chad William Hartley, infant son of Whitney Renee Harris and Chad Earl Hartley, was stillborn Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.

Clyde E. Mason
Clyde E. Mason, 80, of Coal City, died February 3, 2010, at home following a long illness.
Born February 6, 1929, at Sophia, he was the son of the late Walter Mason and Lula Handy Mason.
Mr. Mason was a clerk for the N&W; Railroad for 41 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Mason was a member of the Coal City Freewill Baptist Church.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Mason and James Mason; a sister, Frances McKinney.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Mercer Mason; two sons, Michael Mason and wife, Tresia, of Coal City, and Terry Mason of Coal City; two daughters, Pamela Combs and husband, Eddie, of Coal City, and Sheila Lilly and husband, Ken, of Beckley; three grandchildren, Derek Combs of Hagerstown, Md., Leigh Ann Mason of Coal City, and Hannah Lilly of Beckley; and one brother, Eddie Mason of Virginia.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, February 6, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Charles Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Carol Lee England McClung
GLEN JEAN — Carol Lee England McClung, 66, of Glen Jean, died on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born July 11, 1943, at Herndon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Worther and Mae Church England.
Mrs. McClung attended the Church of God of Prophecy at Pea Ridge.
Sisters, Vernia Moore, Elene Dickerson and Ilene Cook, preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband, Henry A. McClung; one daughter, Samantha McClung Yearego and husband, Curtis, of Hilltop; two sisters, Nina Cook of Helen and Connie England of Mullens, and two brothers, Worther England and wife, Pat, of Slab Fork and Bill England and wife, Gene, of Chesapeake, Va.; two grandchildren, Joseph Yearego and Jakob Yearego, and her friend and caregiver, Lynn Fernandez of Oak Hill, also survive her.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Diane Pittman and Rev. Debbie Minor officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Charles ‘Andrew’ Meadows
Charles “Andrew” Meadows passed away February 2, 2010, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston after a short illness.
Mr. Meadows was born in Sullivan on February 18, 1924. He was the son of the late William Henry and Flossie Mae Hall Meadows.
Mr. Meadows was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He served in World War II and was based in Fort Thomas, Ky. He was a Private First Class 35-656-443 in the Company A-6th Medical battalion.
He served in Battle and Campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon and in the Philippines.
He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars; Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star; Good Conduct Ribbon; Purple Heart; Bronze Star Arrowhead; and the World War II Victory medals and now has received the Highest Honor of all. He proudly displayed these medals in his home. He took full advantage of every opportunity to tell his family and friends of his life in the war. He was a true and proud patriot.
Mr. Meadows was a disabled coal miner. He worked for Pittston Coal Co. as an electrician for approximately 25 years. He was a member of the UMWA.
After becoming disabled from the mining industry, a lot of his time was spent with his family, hunting and deep sea fishing at Chincoteague Island in Virginia.
He was a member of the Old Grove Chapel in Crab Orchard. When his health permitted, he enjoyed the fellowship and gospel singing at the church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Ray and Terry Lee Meadows; two grandsons, John Emerson and Michael “Mikey” Andrew Meadows Jr.; three brothers, Lawrence, James and Dave Meadows; and four sisters, Zettie Grey, Mary Blevins, Eva McAndrews and Sylvia Mahone.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Okalee “Okie” McKinney Meadows; three sons, Danny Meadows and wife Fonda, Mike Meadows and wife Barbara, and Larry Meadows, all of Shady Spring; three daughters, Barbara Marshall and husband Harold, Sherry Hubbard of Daniels, and Sylvia Gaye Alexander of Shady Spring; one brother, Frank Meadows and wife Ann of Meadow Creek. Mr. Meadows is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Ronald Adkins and Pastor Delmas Cox officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3110 Oak Hill. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be a heartfelt son, Joey Lambert, and grandsons, David Toney, Ryan Meadows, Dennis Hubbard, Cody Palmer and Walter Alexander III.
Friends may gather with the family Sunday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to give special thanks to the nursing staff at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, the doctors and nursing staff at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston for their wonderful care and compassion. The Old Grove Chapel and White Oak Missionary Baptist Church for their loving support and services.
There will be a Special Memorial Dinner at Old Grove Chapel Auxiliary Building after the service. Everyone is welcome.

Vernon B. Morgan
On Thursday, February 4, 2010, our beloved, Vernon B. Morgan of Hoo Hoo Hollow, Lester, died at Princeton Community Hospital following a three-week illness. He was 81 years of age.
Born Vernon Burb Morgan on June 12, 1928, at Isaban in McDowell County, he was the 4th of five children born to the late Burbage and Virgie Allen Morgan. His sister, Irma Lester, and brothers, Madison and Ray Morgan, also preceded him in death.
Vernon spent his childhood at Isaban. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. A resident of Lester the past 37 years, he was of the Christian faith. A coal miner, Vernon had over 40 years in the mining industry, retiring from AT Massey, Elk Run Division. He was a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 AF&AM.;
He was a talented bluegrass musician; his children and many friends would meet weekly at his home to play bluegrass.
Vernon was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Joan League Morgan, on August 9, 2007.
Left to cherish his memory are his children. He was “Dad” to daughter, Verna Leadbetter of Lester, and sons, Jim Morgan and his wife Linnie of MacArthur, Donald Morgan and his wife Missi of Glen Daniel, Matthew Morgan, Greg Todd and Brian Todd and his wife, Dee Dee, all of Lester; the doting Paw Paw of eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; the fond brother of Velma Foster of Atlanta, Ga.; a large extended family, many neighbors, friends and fellow musicians.
Funeral services will be Sunday, February 7th, at 1 p.m. in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dale Birchfield officiating. Committal services will be at 3 p.m. at the Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Matheny. The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of the service on Sunday. Pallbearers will be family members and friends.
And so now we must say goodbye. “His memory is blessed.” Although gone from our sight, forever in our hearts you will live.

Emma Jean Garrett Price
WRISTON — Emma Jean Garrett Price, 78, of Wriston, died on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born January 25, 1932, at Wriston, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Jessie L. Plumb Garrett.
Mrs. Price was a member of the Loup Creek Baptist Church, Wriston, and a homemaker.
Her husband, Irvin Lee Price, in 2007 and by three brothers, Marvin Garrett, Daniel Garrett and Albert Garrett, and seven sisters, Margaret Hamby, Helen Jorden, Doris Ayette, Shirley Kay Holcomb, Mary DelConte, Mildred Goode and Sharon Faye Querry, preceded her in death.
Survivors include four sons, David Kevin Price of Wriston, Larry Price of Wriston, Sidney Price and wife, Mary Lou, of Ingram Branch, W.Va., and Ricky Price and wife, Tammy, of Oak Hill; one daughter, Karen Foreman and husband, Mike, of Evans, W.Va.: three brothers, Michael Garrett and wife, Mary, of Wriston, Robert Garrett and wife, Ruby, of Oak Hill, and David Garrett of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and two sisters, Betty Jamison of Barberton, Ohio, and Ruth Mullette of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 8, 2010, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Mike Foreman and Rev. Ronnie Persinger officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

SANDSTONE — Jane Ella Vandall, 58, of Sandstone, died Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born April 14, 1951, in Hinton, she was the daughter of Gladys Phillips Lemon of Hinton and the late James Lemon.
Jane was a former employee of Beckley A.R.H. Hospital and was a member of Meadow Creek Baptist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Summers County and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.
Besides her father, she was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Donald and Gary Lemon, and a sister, Lisa Bragg.
Survivors include her husband, Danny B. Vandall; one son, Danny Wayne Vandall of Sandstone; one daughter, Melinda Gore and husband Jason of Hinton; two brothers, James Lee Lemon and wife Sandy of Hinton and Roger Dale Lemon of Mullens; three sisters, Kathy Duncan and husband William of Jumping Branch, Susie Raines and companion Timmy Gill of Princeton and Tammy Bragg and husband Calvin of Brooks; two granddaughters, Krystina and Ella Jean Gore of Hinton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2010, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor George Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the King Cemetery at Sandstone.

Silas Denford ‘Den’ Ward
HINTON — Silas Denford “Den” Ward, of Hinton, died peacefully at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with his family by his side, following a short illness.
He was born on September 19, 1913, at Hix and was a son of the late Ulyses “Dock” and “Lilly” Caroline Berry Ward. He was 96 years old.
Den was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II at the age of 29 in 1942. He served three years, four months, and 21 days with no leave and was paid five dollars a month. He served in Germany, Italy, France and Belgium before his discharge in 1945. Den then served three years in the CC camps. He was a retired timber worker and in his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman, spending many years of his life hunting and fishing. He continued to love the challenge of fishing and spent many summer days on the banks of ponds and rivers in competition with his sons, daughters and grandchildren in fishing contests.
Other than his parents, Den was preceded in death by two infant children; his son-in-law, Jess Pendry; seven brothers, Lawrence, Hanley, Enfield, Calvin, Otis, Bob and Milous Ward; and three sisters, Lula Bryant, Rosetta Gardner and Margaret Hawley.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Sally Vernice Adkins Ward; five sons, Larry Ward and wife Carol of Hilldale, Gary Ward and wife Jeanie of Hix, Grady Ward and wife Virginia of Jumping Branch, Vernon Ward and companion Amy Conaway, Kirt Ward and wife Jennifer both of Hix; six daughters, Kay Holland and husband Harold of Marie, Vivian Ward and companion Steve Greer of Ballard, Patsy Mills and husband Ray of Clayton, June Pendry and companion Thom Johnson of Nimitz, Laverna Ward and husband William of Hix, Shelia Basham and husband David of Madams Creek; one granddaughter whom he reared, Joann Ward of Bluewell; 13 additional grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Genetta Ballengee of Hinton, Mary Ivolene Bowles of Hix, Arbutus Gill of Hinton and Ellivie Collier of Pennsylvania.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Bobby Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Cales Cemetery on Chestnut Mountain.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of services on Sunday. Family will serve as pallbearers.
