Lena M. Anderson

FAIRLEA — Lena M. Anderson, 84, of Fairlea died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.



Mack Albert Lewis Basham

Mack Albert Lewis Basham, 83, of Cool Ridge, passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Junior Moye officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Leona B. Dickens

VALDESE, N.C. — Mrs. Leona Barefield Dickens, 89, of Valdese, went to her Heavenly Home on Sunday, September 15, 2013, after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Dickens was born January 25, 1924, in Raleigh County, WV, to the late George Barefield and Julia Maynor Barefield.

She was a member for 60 years of the Pentecostal Church of God in Alpoca, WV, and retired as a Nurses Aide from the Wyoming General Hospital. Leona was known as a strong and caring person to her family and friends and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Linville Dickens, a son, Ronald Dickens, two infant children, two brothers, Orville and Robert Barefield, and four sisters, Francis Martin, Cora Moles, Virginia Workman and Lucille Hudson.

She is survived by two sons, Randall Dickens (Cindy) of Mt. Hope, WV, Clarence Dickens (Shelia) of Beckley, WV, seven daughters, Carol Maltba (Gary) of Lenoir, Melba Elkins (Randy) of Hudson, Rose Adams of Valdese, Tena Sizemore (Kevin) of Morganton, Donna Bowling (Billy) of Hildebran, Tammy Isom of Hickory, and Rita Jordan (Tracy) of Taylorsville, and one foster daughter, Emma Polly of Vero Beach, FL. Also surviving are twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Leona B. Dickens will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev. Allen King officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.

A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV, with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.

George W. ‘Pete’ Kishpaugh

LEWISBURG — George W. “Pete” Kishpaugh, 69, of Lewisburg passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013, at Greenbrier Manor after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Siler, KY, on January 26, 1944, he was the son of the late Albert and Nannie Kishpaugh.

Pete recently retired from Fisher Auto Parts after 17 years of service. He was a member of the Lewisburg Baptist Church. He enjoyed driving the church van to pick up and deliver children to church services. In Pete’s spare time he enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Lonnie.

Pete is survived by his wife Lovey of 51 years; a daughter Judy (Satch) Whitt of Frankford, son Jeff of King, NC; grandsons, Dustin Whitt of Morgantown and Ryan and Jared Whitt of Frankford; stepmother, Marjorie Kishpaugh of Middlesboro, KY; brothers, Carl (Judy), Ken (Elizabeth), Harold (Rosetta), all of Frankes, KY, and Danny (Keri) of Clairfield, TN; sisters, Juanita (Dennie) Wilson of Oregon, OH, Janetta (Curt) Gibson of Pineville, KY, Rosetta (Willard) of Pineville, KY, and Cathy (Butch) Loveday of Clairfield, TN.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. on September 18, 2013, at the Lewisburg Baptist Church with Pastor Jonathan Comer officiating. Burial will follow at the Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.

Friends may call on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lewisburg Baptist Church.

OCEANA — Herbert “Herb” Lester, 76, of Oceana, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013.

Calvin J. ‘Pap’ O’Dell

Calvin J. “Pap” O’Dell left his earthly family and friends for his Heavenly eternal home on Saturday, September 14, 2013. He passed in his home surrounded by his family and is now free from pain and struggles rejoicing with family and loved ones gone on before.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend Norma O’Dell in February 2009 and his son in-law Brian Powell in August 2009. Also preceding him were two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include son Ted O’Dell and wife Betsy of Nokesville, VA, granddaughter Marty Powell of Nokesville, grandson Calvin O’Dell and wife Laura of Front Royal, VA, and great-granddaughter Abbie Powell of Nokesville. Other survivors include two sisters, Marge Jillson and Ann Bailard, one brother Clinton O’Dell, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born on a farm in Nicholas County, WV, Calvin served his country in World War II. He then married the love of his life, Norma, in 1947. They relocated to Virginia in 1959, where he spent many years as a union carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, telling tales, and being with family and friends. He was a longtime member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Manassas, VA.

The family will receive friends at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, VA, on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 7803 Well St., Manassas. Interment will be in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Crawly, WV, on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at 12 noon.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Gideons International where his son Ted is an active member.

Leonard R. Wood

FAYETTEVILLE — Leonard R. Wood, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013, at home following an extended illness.

Born February 22, 1922, at Dempsey, WV, he was a son of the late Dallas William and Sarah Eileen Robinett Wood.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Eldridge B. Wood.

Mr. Wood had attended the Lansing Baptist Church in Lansing and was an Army Veteran of WWII and a Lifetime Member of the Fayetteville American Legion Post 149. He had built several homes in the Fayette County area and was a coal miner and a bridge superintendent.

Survivors include his wife Laura Wood; three children, Linda Ramsey and her husband Eddie, Bruce Wood and his wife, Becky, Craig Wood and his wife Sonya; three grandchildren, Kimberly Wood, Greg Wood and Tara Sisk; two great-grandchildren, Emma Wood and Ethan Sisk; one brother, Lavern Wood; one sister, Nannie Lee Hundley; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of Southern WV, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Shirley Ann Wright, 75, of Glen Daniel, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Arnett Chapel, Arnett, with Pastor Larry Kinder and singer Charlie Shelton. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Mausoleum, Prosperity. Visitation for immediate family will be at 5 p.m., and visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
