Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we the family of Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell of Mabscott Hill announce her passing. Our precious Mother entered Heaven’s gate on Monday, Sept. 9th, 2013, at 3:35 a.m. at the Bowers Hospice House. Elsie endured a 50 year battle with rheumatoid arthritis. She recently suffered from complications of pneumonia.
One of eight children, Elsie was born on Dec. 5th, 1934, at Marion, Va. She was in her 78th year. The daughter of the late John Washington and Catherine Snider Fortner, her brothers, Willie, John “Buddy” and Roy Fortner and her sister, Dixie Ann Cochran have preceded her in death as well. Elsie was the fond sister of Jackie Fortner of Parkersburg, Catherine Blanche Wood of Eccles and Emma Louise Dafoe of Washington, Ill.
Elsie was the beloved wife of the late Robert L. McDowell for 48 years. To this union was born her three children, son, Robert Wayne who has preceded her in death and her daughters, Debra Waddell and her husband, Mark of Dinwiddie, Va. and Sue Blake and her husband, Chuck of Cabell Heights.
Mom loved being a homemaker, enjoyed gardening and the beauty of the outdoors. One of Mother’s favorite sayings was from Proverbs, 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We her children will forever cherish her memory.
She is the doting grandmother of Wendi Brewster, Brian Rahall, Jennifer Madar, Amanda Lysak, Valerie Pereira, Rebecca Dingas, Stacy Bragg and Robert Jason McDowell who has passed away; the proud great grandmother of Samantha, Savannah, Robert, Zach, Ava, Sawyer, Reese, Coy, and Raegan; the sweet aunt of many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; many neighbors, among them special friends, Sharon and Carter Stump.
Our Mother was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church where there is a devoted church family. She enjoyed lifting praises by way of songs with her friends, William and Delores Ward and Frank Acord.
And now…“Oh Glad Reunion,” Mother is at home.
On Thursday, Sept 12th, at 1 p.m. we will honor our dear Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell with a “Home Going Service” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Robert Nichols will be officiating. Elsie will be entombed in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity beside her beloved Robert. Wayne rests near bye. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour.
