Hattie Poe Blankenship

GILBERT — Hattie Poe Blankenship, 78, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Revs. Diamond Carter and Walter Grimmett officiating. Burial will follow in the Sycamore Hill Cemetery, Stafford Branch section of Gilbert.

Marvin Dale Brock

HILLSBORO — Marvin Dale Brock, 82, of Hillsboro, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Emmanuel Cemetery near Hillsboro. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton.

William Richard Browning Sr.

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want…”

William Richard Browning Sr., a prominent and beloved citizen of Wyoming County, passed away after a brief and sudden illness at the St. Mary’s Hospital’s neurological trauma ICU in Huntington, W.Va. At the time of his passing on Saturday, September 7, 2013, he was in his 78th year.

Born March 13, 1935 at Rockview, W.Va., he was the eldest son of Emit Harry and Lena Cooper Browning.

He was a member of the elite class of 1953 graduating from Oceana High School. Bill received his Bachelor’s degree from Concord College and his Master’s + 45 from Marshall University.

Beginning an illustrious educational career he started teaching in Wyoming County grade schools before moving to Kopperston Grade School as a math and science teacher. Eventually he became KGS  Principal, retiring from that to a new career after 28 years in education.

He assisted in the establishment of the First Community Bank of Oceana ultimately becoming Branch Manager.

Bill served many positions in the Matheny and Oceana United Methodist Churches; Church Treasurer, Finance Chairman and Bible School Teacher. Currently, he is an active member of the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church.

He was a past member of the Wyoming County Principal’s Organization; Oceana Rotary Club, receiving Rotary’s highest award as a Paul Harris Fellow; instrumental in the reorganization of the Oceana Chamber of Commerce; a charter member of Oceana High School’s Hall of Fame; Oceana City Councilman; and Kopperston Cub Scouting Cub Master. He was an avid fan of his beloved Mountaineers.

Surviving his passing are his loving wife of 57 years Jo Ann Alley Browning, his son William R. “Butch” and Beth Pendry Browning of Salisbury, N.C. and daughter Patricia and Michael Harrison of Morgantown, W.Va. He leaves two grandsons William Ross Browning of Raleigh, N.C. and Richard Clay Browning of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a step-grandson Ryan Harrison of Inwood, W.Va.

Bill leaves a younger brother Harry Lee and Patsy Browning of Frederick, Md., niece Lee Ann and Steve McNee also of Frederick, Md., nephew Harry “Bucky” and Paula Browning of Hagerstown, Md., great niece Sarah Browning and a great nephew Ryan McNee.

He is also survived by his aunt Mary Belle Browning and Harry Lemon of Lewisburg, W.Va., special cousins including: Eddie and Janet Scott of Prichard, W.Va. and others in Chattaroy, W.Va. and Seneca, S.C.

The family would like to express their appreciation to all who have helped them through this difficult period.

A celebration of Bill’s life will begin with visitation of friends on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Evans Funeral Home starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. The funeral procession will move to Toneda Baptist Church for his final service of worship beginning at 2 p.m., with the Rev. James Hamrick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made in William’s name to the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, HC 65 Box 23B, Oceana, W.Va., 24870.

Fred H. Hall

SUMMERSVILLE —Fred H. Hall, 83, of Summersville, died Saturday, September 7, 2013.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, September 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Tipton Methodist Church shelter with Pastor Phil Shouse officiating and military honors by the Summersville VFW. Burial will follow in the Legg Cemetery.  

Friends may call at the Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening.



Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we the family of Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell of Mabscott Hill announce her passing. Our precious Mother entered Heaven’s gate on Monday, Sept. 9th, 2013, at 3:35 a.m. at the Bowers Hospice House. Elsie endured a 50 year battle with rheumatoid arthritis. She recently suffered from complications of pneumonia.

One of eight children, Elsie was born on Dec. 5th, 1934, at Marion, Va. She was in her 78th year. The daughter of the late John Washington and Catherine Snider Fortner, her brothers, Willie, John “Buddy” and Roy Fortner and her sister, Dixie Ann Cochran have preceded her in death as well. Elsie was the fond sister of Jackie Fortner of Parkersburg, Catherine Blanche Wood of Eccles and Emma Louise Dafoe of Washington, Ill.

Elsie was the beloved wife of the late Robert L. McDowell for 48 years. To this union was born her three children, son, Robert Wayne who has preceded her in death and her daughters, Debra Waddell and her husband, Mark of Dinwiddie, Va. and Sue Blake and her husband, Chuck of Cabell Heights.

Mom loved being a homemaker, enjoyed gardening and the beauty of the outdoors. One of Mother’s favorite sayings was from Proverbs, 22:6  “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We her children will forever cherish her memory.  

She is the doting grandmother of Wendi Brewster, Brian Rahall, Jennifer Madar, Amanda Lysak, Valerie Pereira, Rebecca Dingas, Stacy Bragg and Robert Jason McDowell who has passed away; the proud great grandmother of Samantha, Savannah, Robert, Zach, Ava, Sawyer, Reese, Coy, and Raegan; the sweet aunt of many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; many neighbors, among them special friends, Sharon and Carter Stump.

Our Mother was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church where there is a devoted church family. She enjoyed lifting praises by way of songs with her friends, William and Delores Ward and Frank Acord.

And now…“Oh Glad Reunion,” Mother is at home.

On Thursday, Sept 12th, at 1 p.m. we will honor our dear Elsie Jane Fortner McDowell with a “Home Going Service” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Robert Nichols will be officiating. Elsie will be entombed in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity beside her beloved Robert. Wayne rests near bye. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Brian Keith Moore

ANSTED — Brian Keith Moore, 44, of Ansted, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013, as he lived with God by his side.

Brian was a licensed Electrician and a co-Pastor at Praise Valley Ministries in Belva.

He was the youngest son of the late Arthur Edgar Moore and Doreen Bowen Moore.

Brian is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sherry Moore; children, Devin Moore, Jared Moore and Sarah Moore; brothers, James and Rosie Bowen of Hurst, Texas, Robert and Deonne Bowen of White Oak, W.Va., Eddie and Racheal Moore of Fort Worth, Texas, Terry Moore of Alvarado, Texas, Bobby and Becky Moore of Ansted, Benjamin and Vernice Moore of Ripley, W.Va., Alan and Melba Moore of Swiss, WV and Timmy Moore of Falls View, WV He was cherished by his extended family; Mary Neal, James Elkins, John Elkins, Genevieve and Charles Bowe, Dale Haynes, Charles David and Julie Bowe, Joshua, Barbie and Erin Bowe, Blanche, William and Jeremy Lane as well as many nieces, nephew, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Nancy E. Foley Treadway

Nancy E. Foley Treadway, 59, of Sophia, passed away Friday, September 6, 2013.

Born January 11, 1953 in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Bonnie Foley.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Delmon Ray Treadway, Virginia Collins, Tommy Foley, Deloris Green, Pauline Graham, Gloria Treadway.

She is survived by her loving children Delmon Ray Treadway Jr. and Linda Michelle Treadway, and her three grandchildren Kayla Radford, Elizabeth Cadle, and Michael Dale Cadle Jr. and many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

Memorial service will be held today Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home.
