Hattie Poe Blankenship

GILBERT — Hattie Poe Blankenship, 78, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Revs. Diamond Carter and Walter Grimmett officiating. Burial will follow in the Sycamore Hill Cemetery, Stafford Branch section of Gilbert.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Mounts Funeral Chapel, Gilbert, where a special service will be at 7 p.m.

Marvin Dale Brock

HILLSBORO — Marvin Dale Brock, 82, of Hillsboro, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Emmanuel Cemetery near Hillsboro. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton.

William Richard Browning Sr.

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want…”

William Richard Browning Sr., a prominent and beloved citizen of Wyoming County, passed away after a brief and sudden illness at the St. Mary’s Hospital’s neurological trauma ICU in Huntington, W.Va. At the time of his passing on Saturday, September 7, 2013, he was in his 78th year.

Born March 13, 1935 at Rockview, W.Va., he was the eldest son of Emit Harry and Lena Cooper Browning.

He was a member of the elite class of 1953 graduating from Oceana High School. Bill received his Bachelor’s degree from Concord College and his Master’s + 45 from Marshall University.

Beginning an illustrious educational career he started teaching in Wyoming County grade schools before moving to Kopperston Grade School as a math and science teacher. Eventually he became KGS  Principal, retiring from that to a new career after 28 years in education.

He assisted in the establishment of the First Community Bank of Oceana ultimately becoming Branch Manager.

Bill served many positions in the Matheny and Oceana United Methodist Churches; Church Treasurer, Finance Chairman and Bible School Teacher. Currently, he is an active member of the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church.

He was a past member of the Wyoming County Principal’s Organization; Oceana Rotary Club, receiving Rotary’s highest award as a Paul Harris Fellow; instrumental in the reorganization of the Oceana Chamber of Commerce; a charter member of Oceana High School’s Hall of Fame; Oceana City Councilman; and Kopperston Cub Scouting Cub Master. He was an avid fan of his beloved Mountaineers.

Surviving his passing are his loving wife of 57 years Jo Ann Alley Browning, his son William R. “Butch” and Beth Pendry Browning of Salisbury, N.C. and daughter Patricia and Michael Harrison of Morgantown, W.Va. He leaves two grandsons William Ross Browning of Raleigh, N.C. and Richard Clay Browning of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a step-grandson Ryan Harrison of Inwood, W.Va.

Bill leaves a younger brother Harry Lee and Patsy Browning of Frederick, Md., niece Lee Ann and Steve McNee also of Frederick, Md., nephew Harry “Bucky” and Paula Browning of Hagerstown, Md., great niece Sarah Browning and a great nephew Ryan McNee.

He is also survived by his aunt Mary Belle Browning and Harry Lemon of Lewisburg, W.Va., special cousins including: Eddie and Janet Scott of Prichard, W.Va. and others in Chattaroy, W.Va. and Seneca, S.C.

The family would like to express their appreciation to all who have helped them through this difficult period.

A celebration of Bill’s life will begin with visitation of friends on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Evans Funeral Home starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. The funeral procession will move to Toneda Baptist Church for his final service of worship beginning at 2 p.m., with the Rev. James Hamrick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made in William’s name to the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, HC 65 Box 23B, Oceana, W.Va., 24870.
