Robert Junior Crites

LEWISBURG — Robert Junior Crites, 80, of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home in Fairlea after a long illness.

Robert was born in Fairmont on April 15, 1933 and was the son of the late Thomas Bert and Eva Zulu Vowels Crites.

He graduated from West Fairmont High School in Fairmont, W.Va., then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was nicknamed “Fireball”. During his active duty of four years, he was a Drill Instructor Sergeant and an Airmen First Class during the Korean War, then served four years in the reserves.

He was a founding member of the Central Church of the Nazerene in Fairmont; was a member of the Faimont American Legion Post No. 17. Following his military service, he was employed as a mold maker at Owens Illinois in Fairmont for 22 years. During this time he met his wife Carol Darlene Crites, of 51 years. She preceded him in death in December, 2008.

Robert had four siblings, Joanne Davis, Margie Clark and Mary Lou Viands who also preceded him in death. Harold is still living in Fairmont.

Robert and Carol moved to Lewisburg, W.Va. 20 years ago to be with their daughter, Dr. Debra Crites-Sams. Robert and Carol where active members of the Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church in Fairlea, W.Va. Robert is survived by three children and their families; Dr. Debra Crites-Sams and husband Robert and their son Matthew, Robert DeRiggi and wife Vickie DeRiggi and their daughters, Celeste DeRiggi and Sofi DeRiggi, Sheila Loftis and husband Michael and their children Corey Loftis and Lilly Loftis. Many nieces and nephews were close to his heart.

Funeral services for Mr. Crites wil be Sunday, September 8, 2013, 2 p.m., at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with Rev. Ike Hughes and Rev. Ed Midcap officiating. The family will receive their family and friends on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Robert will be laid to rest with Military Rites beside his wife at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful and compassionate nursing staff and physicians at Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home and Greenbrier Valley Medical Center for their love and support.
