Allaine Rae Allen Arbaugh

Allaine Rae Allen Arbaugh, age 85, of Raleigh, WV, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House.

Born on February 17, 1928, in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Charles Allen and Cora Brogan Allen.

Mrs. Arbaugh was a retired employee for the Raleigh County Board of Education, where she served as a cook for Stratton Junior High School, and last from Shady Spring Elementary School.

She attended the Raleigh Baptist Church, and had made Raleigh her home for most of her life.

Mrs. Arbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Arbaugh, by brothers, Sidney, Claude, Lee,  C.F. “Jake,” and John Allen, and by sisters Bertha Gill, Juanita Boley, Goldie Lewis, and Edith Vest.

Survivors include her children, Roy I. Arbaugh and his wife Brenda of Castalian Springs, TN, Donna Harmon and her husband William of Daniels, Diane May and her husband David of Sevierville, TN, Becky Arbaugh of Beckley, and Lora Jarrell and her husband Tim of Rock Hill, SC; step-sons, Jerry Wayne Arbaugh of Oregon, Gene Arbaugh of Oak Hill, and James Arbaugh of Rainelle.

A brother, Ernest “Rusty” Allen of Shady Spring, and a sister Lorraine Lacek of Daniels.

14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at 8 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Allen officiating. Sandra Jo Bailey, 57, of Crane St., Beckley, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

PETERSTOWN — James Mason Cockerham, 90, of Peterstown, passed away Sept. 2, 2013. 

Family will receive friends in celebration of his life from 2 through 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, followed by a funeral service officiated by Minister Tony Reed, at the funeral home chapel. His family will accompany him to his final resting place at Birchlawn Abbey Mausoleum in Pearisburg, Va.

Derrick Eye (Hart), age 34, of Glen Morgan, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013.

Virginia Mae Harvey

Virginia Mae Harvey, 65, of Tug Creek Road, Hinton, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday Sept. 2, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a long illness.

Born Aug. 14, 1948, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Roy (Jack) and Vada Gill Wills.

Virginia was a former employee of the West Virginia State Prison for Women at Pence Springs. She was a graduate of Hinton High School and was of the Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Raymond and Teddy Wills, and also by a sister, Janice Harman.

Survivors include a daughter, Terri Hensley of Hinton; one brother, Roger Wills of Hinton; four sisters, Shirley Bowling and husband Keith, Cassie Chewning and husband Darrell and Anita Cox and husband Cecil, all of Hinton, and Angie Crewey and husband Ray of Pipestem; three grandchildren, Candice, Trisha and Chance Hensley, all of Hinton; and a special close friend, Pete Cox of Hinton.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at the Wills Family Cemetery on Tug Creek Road near Hinton with Pastor Cecil Cox officiating. There will be no visitation. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Nancy J. Jones

Nancy J. Jones, 56, of Beckley, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at UVA Medical Hospital, Charlottesville, VA, following a 10 month battle with cancer. Nancy passed away peacefully with her husband, Dave on one side and her sister, Jewell on the other side.

Born November 20, 1956, she was the daughter of Dorothy Reichard and the late Albert Reichard. 

In addition to her father Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Stewart Reichard and her mother-in-law, Virginia Jones.

Nancy was a 1975 Shady Spring High School honor graduate, having worked most of her life as an executive secretary. Nancy’s last job, which she dearly loved, was taking care of her mother.

Nancy was the most loving and caring person that you would ever meet, she always put others before herself. She gave of herself till the end, Heaven received a beautiful angel when the Lord took Nancy home.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 34 years, Charles D. Jones III; brothers, Gary Reichard and wife, Mary Ellen of Lakewood, Ohio, Bruce Reichard and wife, Fran of Strange Creek, Edward Reichard and wife, Fran of Daniels; sisters, Jewell Bragg and husband, Jon of Pluto, Brenda Campbell and husband, James of Beckley; father-in-law, Charles D. Jones Jr.; sister-in-law, Anita Jones of Beckley; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Doug Holly officiating. Following the services Nancy will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Jon Bragg, Michael McCabe, Nick Reichard, Anthony Salvatore, Mike Bays, and Bob Worley.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Charles Edward Kelly, 89, of Enon, Ohio and formerly of Daniels, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013.

Funeral services for celebrating the life of Mr. Kelly will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley.

Visitation will be held on the same afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Audrey D. Marcum, 80, of Stephenson, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.

BALLARD — Annie Frances Neal, 75, of Ballard, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013.

James Cleveland Rutledge

James Cleveland Rutledge, 97, of Lewisburg, died at home on Sept. 1, 2013.

Born March 20, 1916, at Charleston, he was the son of the late James Cleveland and Zada Elizabeth Rutledge and was preceded in death by 10 siblings.

He was a construction engineer and retired from Union Carbide.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mildred Wade Rutledge; brother, Bruce Edward Rutledge, of Dunbar; and sister, Mary Agnes Johnson, of Belle.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Monroe “Floyd” Scarbro

Monroe “Floyd” Scarbro, 69, of Clear Creek, passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, following a long illness. 

He was born on July 25, 1944, in Beckley. He was the son of the late Beverage Scarbro and Maggie Scarbro Runion of Clear Creek.

He was a retired coal miner from Consolidated Coal Company, a member of the United Mine Workers of America, and an avid game cock fighter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirleen “Dixie” Williams Scarbro.

Survivors include his three daughters, Ruby Hurd and husband Larry of Waynesville, Missouri, Mona Smith and husband Rich of Roanoke, VA, and Rosetta Honaker of Colcord, WV; two sons, Rocky Scarbro of Fairdale and Elijah Scarbro of Clear Creek; five brothers, Harold, Woody, Denver, Jackie, and Ricky Scarbro; seven sisters, Alice Collins, Juanita “Booky” Graley, Julie Hoke, Rachel McKnight, Patty Tyree, Elsie Jones, and Libby Toney; nine grandchildren, Stacey Robinson, Rockford Scarbro II, Cortney Hurd, Alan Stover, Austin Hurd, Jessica Hurd, Brenden Honaker, Kelsi Honaker, and Peyton Smith; five great grandchildren, Cami Robinson, Abby Robinson, Breona Hurd, Chase Bohli, and Kyndalin Dillon; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and many, many close friends.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Floyd will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Workman’s Creek Church in Ewing’s Creek with Pastor Gary Maynor officiating. Interment will follow at Ewing’s Creek Cemetery.

Friends may gather for visitation at the church from noon to 2 p.m.

Donald Everett ‘Donnie’ Valley, Jr.

Donald Everett “Donnie” Valley, Jr., 67, of Oceana, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Donnie was born Sept. 27, 1945, in Beckley, a son of the late Donald Everett and Martha Lucille Griffith Valley.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, member of the UMWA and a retired coal miner.

He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law Ben Dixon.

Survivors include his loving wife Phyllis Young Valley; three daughters, Rhonda (Marvin) Cole of Lillydale, Donna (Erby) Lester of Oceana and Melissa (Daren) Bullard of Hickory, NC; five grandchildren, Autumn Lester, Kaitlyn Lester, Chase Bullard, Connor Bullard and Nevaeh Cole; four sisters, Gretta (Dan) Farley of Beckley, Kathy Dixon of Richmond, VA, Brenda (Tom Thumb) Wrestler of Charleston and Linda Taylor of Newport News, VA; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 4, 2013, in the chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home with Rev. Oza Mullins, Jr. officiating.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In keeping with his wishes he will be cremated following the services.

Military Rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard.

Curtis Ray West, 35, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at Hico.

Zelma Persinger Whited

Zelma Persinger Whited, 81, of White Sulphur Springs died Sept. 2, 2013, at the Genesis White Sulphur Springs Center following a long illness.

Zelma was preceded in death by her parents, Ashford and Mary Gray Persinger; her husband, E.L. “Red” Whited; son, Jeffrey Whited and sisters, Doris Loomis and Shelby Craft.

She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Burgess (Denny) of Tornado, and Judy Burns (Grover) of White Sulphur Springs; sisters, Phyllis Alderman (Milton) of Waverly, Ohio and Joyce Bolt (Larry) of White Sulphur Springs; brothers, Ashford “Bud” Persinger (Marthena) of King, N.C. and Robert “Bobby” Persinger (Hazel) of Caldwell; grandchildren, Benjamin Whited (Meredith) of Lewisburg, Whitney Whited (Ali) of Dawson, Holly Jo Burns, Neil Burns and John Burns (Ashley) all of White Sulphur Springs; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Hensley, Annie Whited, Cora Whited and Jobe Whited.

Zelma was known for her abilities in the kitchen and her gardening and crafting skills but will be remembered most for her love of God and family and her kind and generous spirit.

The family appreciates the support and care given Zelma during her four-year stay at the White Sulphur Springs Center.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs with the Reverend Gerald Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home.

Lou Withrow, 78, of Pineville passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston.

A celebration of Lou’s life will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at the Pineville Southern Baptist Church, Pineville, with Rev. Dewight Stafford officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the church.

Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
