ELKHORN CITY, Ky. — Opal Church, 95, of Elkhorn City, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013, in Beckley.
Opal was born April 12, 1918, in Pike County, Ky., to the late Arson Potter and Laura Conley Potter. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Finnie Adkins, and her second husband, William D. Church, one daughter, Fayetta Blackburn, two sons, Alec and David Adkins, one grandson, Danny Bruce Adkins, and one brother, Thomas Potter.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Helema Jones of Beckley, four grandchildren, Lanny Adkins, Lisa Runion, Donnie Jones and Tiffany Bailey-Slone; and one great-grandson, Robbie Runion.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhorn City, Ky. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. from the chapel. Burial will follow at Dow Brooks Cemetery, Draffin, Ky.

LYNCO — Brenda Pricilla Vint Johnson, 71, of Lynco, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at her home.
She was born September 19, 1941, in Wharton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Curtis Edward and Alta Mae Justice Vint. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Douglas Leon “Doug” Johnson; two daughters Tina Johnson and Cynthia Pennington; and a sister Patricia Baker.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Survivors include a daughter Lisa Dawn White and husband William of Oceana; two sisters Frances “Sis” Collins and husband Thomas of Fairdale and Kathy Maynard of South Charleston; a brother Stewart Vint of Fairdale; a sister-in-law and care taker Erdene Hiller of Colonial Beach; six grandchildren Dougie Johnson, Kurtis White, Tina Pennington, TJ Pennington, Justin Pennington and Neal White; a great-grandchild Camryn Jones; and a host of other loving family and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Agnes Frances Steele Mills, age 90, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.
Born on April 19, 1923, at McAlpin, she was the daughter of the late Robert Preston Richardson and Jessie Lang Richardson.
Mrs. Mills was a homemaker, and was a member of the Cranberry Baptist Church. She had made her home on Allen Avenue in Beckley since 1950.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lester Roger Steele Jr. and her second husband William C. Mills, a son, Wendell Nolan Steele, a brother Robert Preston Richardson.
Surviving are children: Roger Steele and his wife Dianna of Edenton, N.C.; Mason Steele and his wife Carla of Hope Mills, N.C., and Vicki Forinash and her husband Sam of Glade Springs, Daniels; three stepdaughters, Judy Beckett and her husband Dempsey of Crab Orchard, Gina Mimms and her husband David of Fayetteville, and Connie Chapman of Maple Fork; daughter-in-law, Anita Steele of Port Royal, Va.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cranberry Baptist Church at Cranberry, W.Va., on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at 3 p.m., with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, W.Va.

Betty Loretta Smith
OAK HILL — Betty Loretta Smith, 84, of Oak Hill, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, in the Pinelodge Care and Rehab Center at Stanaford.
Born November 15, 1928, at Plum Orchard, W.Va., the daughter of the late Wetzel Aliff and Garnet Wriston Aliff. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos E. Smith, two sons JC Smith and Dallas Smith, four brothers Gene Reece, Robert Aliff, Luther Aliff and Bill Reece, and two sisters Nettie Ruth Lipscomb and Opal Faye Aliff.
Betty loved God and attended the Life Bridge Assembly of God in Oak Hill. She was a Sunday school teacher, homemaker, caregiver, and craft maker; she made beautiful doll clothes.
Betty is survived by Uncle Willis Wriston; two nephews Randy Lipscomb and his companion Karon, Billy Reece and his wife Robin; two nieces Barb Eberhardt and her husband Randy, Robin Sinkhorn; numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and special friends Wanda and Jim Burggraff and family.
Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel where the funeral will be held 1 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Bobby Adkins officiating and where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Dorothy Lee Tolbert
Dorothy Lee Tolbert, 96, of Crab Orchard, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.
Born April 27, 1917, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Willie Edgar and Lillie Davis Underwood.
Dorothy was a homemaker, an avid reader and attended Oak Grove Christian Church for over 86 years. She was very active in the church having taught Women’s Bible Class for 50 plus years, provided many meals for visiting ministers and missionaries and was a youth sponsor. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her family.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Burdette Tolbert; sister, Hazel Clay; brothers, Herbert, Oscar, Orval and John Underwood; and a son-in-law, Elwood Phipps.
Survivors include her daughters, Joyce Phipps of Crab Orchard and June Goss and husband Ronald of Jonesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren, David Kelly Phipps and wife Kim (JoAnn) of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Kim White and husband Doug of Crab Orchard, Daniel Phipps and wife Lori of Charleston, Jonathan Goss and wife Susan of Bluefield and Julee Gray and husband Matthew of Carrollton, Ga.; great-grandchildren, David and Josh White, Brooke Phipps, Mallory Braenovich, Joel Maddox, Meredith, Caleb and Jenna Goss and Catherine and Lauren Gray; very special niece and nephew, Ann Mills and Clyde “Skeet” Clay; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Oak Grove Christian Church with Pastor Kelly Gowen officiating. He will be assisted by grandsons Kelly Phipps and Jonathan Goss. James Ralph Toney
HOUGHTON LAKE, Mich. — James Ralph Toney, 79, of Houghton Lake, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family.
James was born on February 14, 1934, in Lookout, W.Va., to William and Nellie (Holliday) Toney.
James served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was married on March 20, 1954, in Ansted, West Virginia, to Ann L. Arthur. The couple moved to the Detroit area where Jim was a Machinist for Preston Spring of Ferndale for many years. Following the death of his wife Ann in 2009 and his failing health he moved to Houghton Lake making his residence with his daughter, Barbara. His love and passion was his family and then fishing.
Surviving Mr. Toney are his three sons, James (Wilma) Toney Jr. of Warren, Mich., Harrison (Shelley) Toney of Ansted, W.Va., and Roger Toney of Ansted, W.Va.; two daughters, Barbara (Darrell) Wekwert of Houghton Lake, and Elizabeth (Harold) Peck of Ansted, W.Va.; two sisters, Clara Kincaid of Ansted, W.Va., and Evelyn (John) Holden of Victor, W.Va.; four brothers, David Toney of Ansted, W.Va., Frank (Debbie) Toney of Ansted, W.Va., Phillip (Jean) Toney of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Charlie Holliday of Montgomery, W.Va.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann; daughter, Vicki Toney, daughter, Rhoda Attanasio, and brother, Harrison.
A family graveside service will be held at the Good Hope Cemetery in West Virginia.

Raymond J. Toothman
RONCEVERTE — Raymond J. Toothman, 91, of Ronceverte, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on July 24, 1922, to the late Harry Cleveland and Rachel Susan Toothman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Madge Ellen Morgan; two brothers, Wheeler Curry Toothman and Edgar Turner Toothman, and a sister, Virginia Susan Highlander.
Raymond was a 1941 graduate of Greenbrier High School and served his country during World War II by making airplane cylinders for the Alcoa Aluminum factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He retired from the Virginia Electric and Power Company in 1984 with 41 years service. Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling, including two trips to Ireland with his daughters and granddaughters.
Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Robert (Robbie) Wilson, and Mrs. Earnie (Vicki) Wyant of Ronceverte, and Mrs. Dale (Tammy) Allen of Lewisburg; grandchildren Michael (Shelby) Wilson, Mrs. Eric (Robin) Wilson von Seldeneck, Matthew Wyant, Tara Wyant, Ivan Allen and Ben Allen; great-grandchildren Nick Wilson, Lily Wilson, Wilson von Seldeneck, Wade von Seldeneck, and Hayley Wyant; a special niece, Gloria Smithson; and his hunting and fishing buddy, Winfred Baker.
Raymond faithfully attended Zion’s Light Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. He lived his life to serve the Lord.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 26th, at 3 p.m. at Zion’s Light Baptist Church with Jeff Canterbury, Michael Wilson and Gary Baker officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenbrier Baptist Church Cemetery.
