Paul Stephen ‘Steve’ August

Paul Stephen “Steve” August, 63, of Stickney, met his Lord and Savior, Jesus, face to face on Saturday, November 9, 2013.

Born March 1st, 1950, at Stickney, he was the son of the late Rev. William and Irene August.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Greta Pettry Quarles and Gloria Ann August, a brother, Jerry Dean August, sister-in-law, Judy August, brothers-in-law, Charlie Pettry, Ronnie Quarles and Rex Stover. A child which he never met till the day of his passing. He was a 1968 graduate of Marsh Fork.

He was a 1969 graduate of Nashville Auto Diesel College. He was a retired coal miner and a proud and loyal member of the UMWA. Steve also was a proud member of the Masonic Boone Lodge #162 in Whitesville, WV, and a member of Scottish Rite and Shriners.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 40 years, Terry Stover August, his children, “his heart,” Andrea August Cook and husband, Mark, of Naoma, Chasity August Gilfilen and husband, Steve, of Rock Creek, and Steve August II and wife, Kristen, of Rock Creek, his grandchildren “the apples of his eye” Joshua and Joseph Cook, Nathaniel Gilfilen and Madeline and Bailey August, his sister, Sandy August Hamilton and husband, Enoch, of Millwood, WV, his brothers, David August and wife, Charlotte, of Stickney, John August and wife, Bonny, of New Castle, PA; Gary August of Charleston, WV, and Ray August and wife, Barbara, of Brunswick, OH, his mother-in-law Sina Stover, and his brother-in-law, Steve Stover, of Stickney, WV; many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved, A very dear aunt Martha Pauley of Nellis, WV. He had a host of friends, too many to count, whom he cherished very much, special friends Weldon, Grover, C.C., Danny and David that went the last mile with him.

Steve loved his family beyond measure, and was consumed by the love of Christ. He was known by many and loved by all. The Lord called, “come home my weary child, and he answered, “Here am I.”

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, November 14, 2013, at 2 o’clock in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, WV, with the Rev. David Cook and the Rev. Danny Gilfilen. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Fred Bailey

HANOVER — Fred Bailey, 96, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Logan Center.

Mr. Bailey was a retired coal miner, member of the UMWA and a member of the Pentecostal faith. He was a retired carpenter and was a U.S. Army WW II veteran.

He was born July 27, 1917, at Baileysville, the son of the late Robert and Maggie Holcomb Bailey. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Bailey; stepson, David Justice; baby brother, Junior Bailey; two brothers, Kincel and J.C. Bailey and two sisters, Lettie Walls and Marie Stone.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Justice Bailey of Baileysville; special stepdaughter, Geneva (Ben) Harper of Verner; stepson, Larry Justice of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepdaughter-in-law, Debbie Justice; two brothers, Bill (Donna) Bailey of Beckley and Jimmy (Judy) Bailey of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Opal Roberts of Toms River, N.J., Helen (Bob) Graham of Mullens, Janis (Joe) Butner of Spotsylvania, Va. and Freda Billings of Glen White; step grandchildren: Lynlee, Susan and Matthew Justice, Jamie, Dawn and David Justice; Terry and Jerry Harper; special niece, Rose Stafford; many special nieces and nephews that loved their uncle Fred.

Service will be 12 noon Thursday, Nov. 14, 20134, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Denny May and Louie Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, with a special service at 7 p.m.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Isaac Paul Brown, 18, of White Sulphur Springs, died on Saturday, November 9, 2013.

His graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Beckley.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 13, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs.

LILLYHAVEN — Warren Bruce “Frito” Cook, 55, of Lillyhaven, passed away on Sunday,  November 10, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco.

Mary Sue Frazier

HINTON — Mary Sue Frazier, 78, of Hinton, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born February 26, 1935 in Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Macil Adkins Ward.

Mary Sue was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hinton. She was a loving wife and mother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She retired from Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital as a Cook and Supervisor with 23 years of service.  Prior to that she worked at the old Hinton Hospital for 22 years as well as Jack’s Restaurant, The Diner and The Steakhouse. After retirement she catered dinners for the Hinton Lions Club, the Hinton Ruritan Club, the Hinton Rotary Club, the Summers County Hospital Auxillary and the City of Hinton Fire Department dinners. She also cared for and fed the less fortunate and hungry in the community. She was one of the founding members of the Helping Hands Committee at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital. Mary Sue’s chicken and dumplings and vegetable soup were staples at Train Days for 17 years.    

Mary Sue was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Pitzer and four brothers, Harold, Harding, Ray and Curly Joe Ward.

Those left to cherish her memory include a husband of 35 years, Danny Frazier; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Caudle and husband Rick of Hinton and Mrs. Peggy Cales and husband Roger of Waynesboro, Pa.; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five sisters, Connie Cox and husband Robert of Ellison Ridge, Diane Lilly and husband Ollie of Ellison Ridge, Dreama Cox and husband Tom of Hamilton, Ohio, Judy Copeland and husband Buddy of Cleveland, Ohio and Phyllis Gillan and husband Steve of Beckley; two brothers, Harry Ward of Hamilton, Ohio and Douglas Ward and wife Brenda of Beckley and special friend, Jimmy Dale Gunter.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. to Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Roy Lee Honaker Jr., Roy Carter and Robert Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Cales Cemetery on Chestnut Mountain near Hinton. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be members of the City of Hinton Fire Department.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren; Michele Brookes, Cheri Rae Lytle, Mark Caudle, Chris Cales and Joshua Cales.

SUMMERSVILLE — Amanda Renee Gibson, 29, of Summersville, died Saturday,  November 9, 2013.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville, with Pastor Lonnie Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Gibson Family Cemetery at Enon.

WHARNCLIFFE — Sheena Belinda Gibson, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013.

Shirley Ann Goins

BACKUS MOUNTAIN — Shirley Ann Goins, 66, of Backus Mountain, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 10, 2013 after a short illness. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Born March 2, 1947 in Oceana, W.Va., she is preceded in death by both grandparents who raised her, Emery Haven and Goldie Frye Gwinn of Piney View, W.Va.

 She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Daniel P. Goins Sr.; her son Daniel P. Goins Jr, his wife Patricia Goins, their children Anthony Goins and wife Stacy Goins, their three children Kayleigh, Aubrey and Liam, Sasha Goins, Tiffany Goins and Chelsea Goins; a son Delbert Goins; a son John Goins and wife Rita Goins, and their children Casper, Dezirae  and Haven; her special uncle Buddy and his wife Barb; her special cousin Erdine; her best friend Nancy Sawyers; along with multiple brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. All of who loved her very much.

Shirley was of Pentecostal faith. She enjoyed reading her bible and shopping.

Services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, November 15, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Shirley Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Harrah Cemetery, Backus Mtn., Meadow Bridge, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Garnet Akers Richmond

DUNNS — Garnet Akers Richmond, 103, of Dunns, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Serenity Place Nursing Home at Lerona.

Born May 7, 1910 at Cucumber (Newhall), she was the daughter of the late Lula Conner Akers and Wade Virgil Akers.

Garnet moved to Dunns when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Beaver High School in Bluefield. She later graduated from Concord College and taught school in Summers, Raleigh and Mercer counties before retiring as the principal of Flat Top Elementary. Garnet was a member of the Mountain Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Dunns and became a Christian at age 16. Through the years she enjoyed gardening, hiking, ginsinging, bluegrass music and reading. She loved poetry and often came to the table reciting a famous poem. Garnet has been an inspiration and role model for all who have known her. She attributed her long life to God and “climbing these hills.” Go rest high on the mountain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel Akers, James Akers and Elmo Akers; and four sisters, Denetta Dillon, Shirley Lilly, Ruth Okes and Ramona Massey.

Left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Thelma Ruth Lusk of Dunns; two sons, Harold Keith Richmond and his wife Patricia of California, Md. and Dennis Hugh Richmond and his wife Naramanda of Dunns; five grandchildren, Sallie Harvey of Holly Hills, Jeffrey Richmond and his wife Elizabeth of Sunderland, Md., Melanie Dichter and her husband Craig of California, Md., Paul Richmond and his wife Cristina of Fairmont and David Richmond and his wife Leslie of Dunns; six great-grandchildren, Zachary Harvey, Jordan Harvey, Samuel Dichter, Stephanie Dichter, Kole Richmond and Jozef Richmond.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Anthony Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Dunns Community Cemetery at Dunns.

Grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Kathalene Foley Smith

Kathalene Foley Smith passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on Thursday, November 7th, 2013, after a long illness.

Kathalene was born December 24, 1935, the youngest of four children to Bernard Opie Foley and Opal King Foley in Beckley.

Kathalene graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School with the Class of 1953, where she was a proud member of the Flying Eagles Marching Band. On July 16th, 1954 she was united in marriage to James Robert Smith. During his career in the US Air Force, she set up many households. Always making sure her family was comfortable and happy for however long the assignment. Some of her many interests were bowling, reading, gardening and watching Jeopardy. She also loved her cats, (Samantha, Taj, Taco and Thomas).

After living in Myrtle Beach, S.C. for 32 years, Kathalene and her husband, James moved to Avinger, Texas to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter.

Kathalene is survived by her husband of 59 1/2 years, James. R. Smith; children Robin (Jeff) Isham of Carrollton, Texas and David (Pam) Smith of Perry, Ga. Also left to mourn her is her granddaughter, Lindsay (Chris) Teague and great-grandchildren, Miles and Harper. She is also survived by brother, Donald Foley of Lebannon, Tenn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

You fought hard to stay with us, but now you can rest. We will miss you more than words can say.

On Thursday November 14, 2013 family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with a graveside service at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park.

Paul R. Smith

RAINELLE — Paul R. Smith, of Rainelle, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 8, 2013, at his home, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 3, 1953, he was the son of Paul R. and Lora F. Ditter Smith of Zanesville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Opal and Ralph Ditter and Margaret and Willis Smith.

Paul was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and most recently worked in law enforcement security.

Survivors include his wife, Denise L. Wells  Smith of Rainelle; four daughters, Mariah L. Smith of Rainelle, Lori Smith of Medina, Ohio, Nicole Smith of Medina, Ohio and Amanda Saunders of Medina, Ohio; two sons, Michael Smith of Portsmouth, Va. and Anthony Smith of Portsmouth, Va.; a brother, Mark Smith of Zanesville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with Pastor Bob Scharnhorst officiating.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service (1 to 2 p.m.) at the funeral home in Rainelle.

The body is to be cremated.

Frances ‘Wade’ Terry

CHARMCO — Frances “Wade” Terry, 68, of Charmco, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, W.Va., following a long illness.

Born Feb. 4, 1945, at Rainelle, he was the son of the late William V. and Renda A. Vandall Terry.

Wade attended Elton Community Church and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. and a retired coal miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ostie Cook and Marie Dunn, and a brother, Jimmy Terry.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Elonya Jean Thornton Terry; two sons, William Terry and wife, Renee of Lilly Park and Matthew Terry of Charmco; six grandchildren, Christine Deel, Lee Deel, Rochelle Terry, Zach Hugart, Cheyenne Hugart and Little Wade Terry; three great-grandchildren, Gaige McCoy, Laikyn McCoy and Clayton Walker; a sister, Penny Thornton and husband, Roger of Charmco; a brother, William Terry Jr. and wife, Hazel of Charmco.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Roger Thornton officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Mary Alice ‘Helen’ Tonelli Thewes

Mary Alice “Helen” Tonelli Thewes of Daniels, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013.

Born in Beckley she was the daughter of the late Enrico and Maddalena Squerzi Tonelli.

Besides her parents, Helen was also preceded in death by her husband A.A. “Honey” Thewes; brothers, Frank “Dorino”, Okey C. and Gino Tonelli and sisters, Edith Tonelli Fussaro and Alice Tonelli.

Helen was a graduate of Marshall University and also attended the University of Pittsburgh. She worked for many years as a chemist, medical technician and microbiologist for the Raleigh County Health Department and also as a coal miner.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth A. Thewes of Daniels; sister, Elizabeth C. Wheeler of Beckley; special nieces and nephews, Kathy Wheeler, Joan Swatzyna, Paul Wheeler and John Wheeler and numerous other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A special appreciation is extended to Hospice of Southern West Virginia nurses Jenny, Diane, Lorrie and Michelle and Medical Director Dr. Gleynora J. Gilbhrighde for their professional care and support for Helen during her illness.

A memorial mass will be held Friday, November 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 614 S. Oakwood Ave. in Beckley with Father Pen officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
