John Henry Allen

WASHINGTON, D.C. — John Henry Allen, 82, of Washington, died Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Sunrise at Fair Oaks in Fairfax, Va.

Born February 28, 1931, at Hilldale, he was a son of the late Grover and India Light Allen.

John was a 1947 Graduate of Talcott High School and a Graduate of American University, Washington, DC. He served on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, as an administrative assistant for 42 years.

Besides his parents he was preceded by two brothers, Grover Allen Jr. and James Allen; six sisters, Wanda Stricker, Emma Massie, Laura Conner, Barbara Stennett, Evelyn Allen and Clariece Allen.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sisters, Mary Lou Mason of Baltimore, Md.,  and India Brown of Hinton; caregiver, Sue Patti of Haymarket, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Reverend Melissa White officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Church Cemetery at Hilldale. Friends may call one hour prior to services.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Walkina Byrd

Walkina Byrd, born on March 24, 1932, in Harper, W.Va., to the late Norman Henry and Carrie Elizabeth Byrd, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, in Beckley, with his family and special friends surrounding him to be with his Lord and Savior.

Walkina retired from the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant while primarily stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Okinawa, Japan. After being honorably discharged in 1969 he went on to a second retirement driving special education and activities school buses for Raleigh County, W.Va. After retiring from Raleigh County he and his wife Dollie ran a food bank, at Sophia Pentecostal Church of God spending countless hours collecting and distributing food to the needy.

Walkina is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Dollie Mae Boone Byrd of Beckley, children Dolly and husband Everette Lilly, Grant and wife Kathy, Ronda Wallace, nine  grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; brothers, Norman of Lester, John and wife Patricia of Dumfries, Va.; brother-in-law, Robert Lilly of Beckley; and sister-in-law Joy Byrd of Dale City, Va.

He was preceded by his brothers Harold, Gene, Autry, Donald Lee, Elijah Byrd and by his sister Doris June Lilly.

On Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. there will be a “Service of Remembrance” for Walkina at the Melton Mortuary Chapel; Rev. Billy Waddell will be officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Military rites will be conducted by I &I 4th Combat Engineer Battalion Alpha Co.
