Rexford Lacy Acord

Rexford Lacy Acord, age 93, of Beckley, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born on September 21, 1920, in Springdale, WV, he was the son of the late Andrew Lacy Acord and Viola Cook Acord.

Mr. Acord was a member of the Flat Top Baptist Church at Flat Top, WV. Rex proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of WWII, having fought in five major battles in the South Pacific with the last being in Iwo Jima. 

He was retired from the Wells Plant at Wharton, WV, and had worked in the coal industry for many years. He was a proud member of the UMWA.

Rex is survived by his wife Doris McQuillen Acord of Beckley, a daughter and son-in-law, Sandi Perrine and her husband Scott of Flowery Branch, Georgia, stepdaughter, Drema Stanley, and stepgranddaughter, Katie Stanley, stepgreat-granddaughter, Brittany Maiola, all of Beckley, stepgranddaughter, Amy Sowder of Wyoming County, stepson, Ernest Bennett of Beckley, stepgrandsons, Joel and Jason.

Sisters, Virginia Faye Mullins and Sarah Inez French, both of Fort Pierce, Florida, brother Andrew Ruel Acord and his wife Helen of Cincinnati, Ohio, a nephew Donald T. Moore and his wife Raejean of Charleston, WV, special friends, Russell and Susan Dalton of Uneeda, WV, and his extra Special friend, his dog “Jake.”

Mr. Acord was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Beatrice Seletyn Acord, by a granddaughter Michelle Lacy Perrine, and by a sister Thelma Ruth Moore.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Michael McQuillen officiating. Burial will follow at the Canaday Cemetery at Glen View, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Military Graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Flat Top Baptist Church, P.O. Box 50, Flat Top, WV 25814.

Mrs. Louise Blanks, 85, of Harlem Heights, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013.

Betty Lou Hatfield Cheyne

DANESE — Betty Lou Hatfield Cheyne, 76, of Danese, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness.

Born March 24, 1937, in Beelick Knob, Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Hatfield and Claredith Reedy McClanahan.

Betty loved cooking and her flowers and was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She worked in manufacturing as an electronics assembler for 30 years in New York and Virginia.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Cheyne; a half sister, Dolly Hogge of Newport News, Virginia; and two brothers George Alva Hatfield and wife Patricia of Danese and Patrick Henry Hatfield of Fayetteville.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Rev. Sherman McCombs officiating. Interment will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may gather with the family Wednesday, November 6, 2013, from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel.

OAK HILL — Russell E. “Rusty” Edwards Jr., 62, of Oak Hill, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013.

Bonnie Jean Gilkerson

MEADOW BRIDGE — Bonnie Jean Gilkerson, 65, of Meadow Bridge, on November 2, 2013, while surrounded by family and friends became an angel in heaven after a long battle with cancer.

Born August 31, 1948, in Meadow Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Jean Mullins. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Mullins.

She is survived by a loving family, her husband of 47 years, Robert Gilkerson; three daughters, Robin Fitzwater and husband Lawrence of Danese, Melissa Burnett and husband Le of Wapwallopen, PA, Rhonda Patterson and husband Bret of Meadow Bridge; six grandchildren that she loved dearly, Joseph and Cheryl Fitzwater, Holly and Cody Burnett, Chase and Brooke Patterson; and two sisters, Brenda Fleshman of Danese and Barbara Brogan of Winder, GA.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel, with Pastor Mark Spence officiating. Interment will follow in Patton Hill Cemetery, Meadow Bridge.  

Friends may gather with the family Monday, November 4, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle.

Pallbearers will be her 3 grandsons, Joe Fitzwater, Cody Burnett, and Chase Patterson, her 2 nephews Mike and Steve Gilkerson, and her uncle Roger Gwinn.

Anthony Steven Hanshew

LOOPS ROAD — Anthony Steven Hanshew, 43, of Loops Road, passed away quietly, surrounded by his loving family Saturday, November 2, 2013.

Born October 14, 1970, in Radford, Virginia, he was the son of Donna Wyatt of Loops Road and the late Johnny Lee Hanshew.

Anthony was a sports writer and editor for papers in Beckley, Clarksburg, Huntington and Parkersburg. He was of the Baptist faith. Anthony was a wonderful son, brother, and uncle. He had a sweet disposition, a huge heart and loved to make people laugh.

In addition to his mother, Donna Wyatt, Anthony is survived by his brother Kevin and wife Tersa of Danese; his nephew Brayden of Danese; his niece Kennady of Danese; and his best friend since fourth grade, Buddy Judy of Concord, North Carolina.

A celebration of Anthony’s life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastors Don Hanshew and Chris Sims officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Terry Sue Murray

ROCK VIEW — Terry Sue Murray, 65, of Rock View, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division following a sudden illness.

Born March 18, 1948, in Lexington, KY, she was the daughter of the late Homer Wilson McBrayer and Edna Stafford McBrayer.

Terry was a member of the New Life Community Church and a member of the Antique Dealer’s Association. She worked for the Wyoming County Board of Education as a special education specialist. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, reading and being with her family especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Matthew Murray of the residence

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Jay Morgan officiating.

Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Betty Jane Pecora

Betty Jane Pecora, 80, of Beckley, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House. Born March 14, 1933, in Bowling Green, KY, she was the daughter of the late O.C. Parker and Beatrice Myrtle Hart. Besides her mother, Betty was also preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Monohan.

Betty was a retired chief probation officer for Raleigh County. She was a member of St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley where she was part of the Ladies of St. Francis.  Betty was an active volunteer for Birthright of Beckley and a member of the Formosa Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Donald Pecora; daughter, Margaret Day and her husband Bruce of Summerville, SC; sons William Pecora and his wife Connie of Pittsburgh, PA, Jeremy Pecora and his wife Julie of Novi, MI; daughter Patricia Fulco and her husband Frank of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Sarah Day, Patricia Day, Andrew Day, William Pecora, Julian Pecora, Jensen Pecora, Jaxon Pecora, Justin Pecora, Jaylen Pecora, Paolo Fulco and Sophia Fulco.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church with Father Pen officiating. A rite of committal will follow in St. Sebastian Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, where a rosary will be recited at 7:45 led by Monsignor Samuel Sacus.

Pallbearers will be Walter Harper, Bob Cantor, Tony McKinney, David Stanley, Charlie Feldhake and Rob Rappold.

Ida Pearl Sevy

HICO — Ida Pearl Sevy, 84, of Hico passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Ansted Center, following a long illness.

She was born May 13, 1929, in Hico, WV. Ida was the daughter of the late Roscoe Lee Sevy and Sadie Margaret Terry Sevy.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Sevy Simmons; two brothers, Harold and Herbert Sevy; sister-in-law, Georgia Sevy; nephew, Edward Sevy; niece, Susan Sevy Barbe; and great-nephew, Robert Bryson Wilson.

She was born and raised on Stringtown Road in Hico. Ida earned her teaching degree at West Virginia University in Morgantown and Concord College in Athens. Ida taught at Layland and Winona; she was an English Teacher at Nuttall High School, Lookout and Midland Trail High School, Hico, for a number of years before retiring. Ida was a faithful member of Sunday Road Baptist Church of Hico.

Survivors are a brother, William Roscoe Sevy and his wife Sharon Neal Sevy of Ansted, sister-in-law Eugenia McGraw Sevy of Beckley, nieces, Tamara Sevy Deligne and Terry Sevy Wilson, nephews, Michael and David Simmons, great-nieces, great-nephews and their children.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Rev. David Snead officiating. Burial will follow at the End of the Trail Cemetery at Clintonville, WV.

Hallie Mae Ward

Hallie Mae Ward, age 80, of Daniels, WV, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013, at the Raleigh Center at Daniels, WV.

Born on June 16, 1933, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Harold Wheeler and Louise McKinney Wheeler.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Marshall Ward, by children Brenda Ward and Debbie Shuck, and by sisters Virginia Dale Wheeler and Frances Richardson.

Surviving children, Margie Leininger and her husband Glen of Rock Hill, SC, Paula Pulsifer and her husband James of Mexico, Maine, Dreama Morgan and her husband Walter of Crab Orchard, Patricia Ward of Shady Spring, Sherri Murphy of Fort Meyers, Florida, James (Bug) Ward and wife Carol of Shady Spring, and Russell Johnson and his wife Deborah of Charleston, SC.

Brothers, Roger Dale Wheeler of Danville, Virginia, Charles Edward Wheeler of Beckley, Robert Wheeler of Deepwater, WV, Donald Wheeler of Tennessee, and Gene Autry Wheeler of Cleveland, Ohio.

Sisters, Jeri Cozart of Beckley, Geneva Grimes of Mabscott, WV, Linda Faye Jones of Charleston, and Alice Bohanon of Kentucky.

25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Patricia Jean Booth Welch

PRINCETON — Patricia Jean Booth Welch, 60, of Princeton, formerly of Daniels, went to be home with the Lord, Friday, November 1, 2013, at the Princeton Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born December 19, 1952, at Meadow Creek, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. Richmond and Louisa Lee Smith Richmond.

Patricia worked as a homemaker. She enjoyed NASCAR and football. She also enjoyed listening to bluegrass and gospel music. She was of the Pentecostal faith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Junior Booth, and one son, Eddie Ray Booth.

She is survived by her husband, David Welch; two sons, Glynn Booth and wife Melissa of Cross Lanes, and David Lee Booth of Florida; one daughter, Brenda Lee Cochran and husband Jeffrey of Princeton; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Roland Stone and wife Barbara of Cool Ridge, Oliver Stone and wife Barbara of Lockbridge, Charles T. Richmond Jr. and wife Teresa of Daniels; three sisters, Jane Hylton of Oak Hill, Shirley Morton and husband Paul of Grandview, Sara Cox and husband Melvin of Beaver. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Rick Henderson and Marvin Mills officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery at Sandstone. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
