Johnny Mack Brown Sr.

DAVIN — Johnny Mack Brown Sr., 59, of Davin, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the Lynco Pentecostal House of Prayer, Lynco, with Pastor Randy Massey officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. In keeping with Johnny’s wishes he will be cremated.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Johnny’s name to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Lynco Pentecostal House of Prayer.

Lonnie Washington Jones

MOUNT NEBO — Lonnie Washington Jones, 89, of Mount Nebo died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Spruce Grove Community Church at Mount Nebo with the Rev. Tim McClung officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville.

George Francis Kisiel

PETERSTOWN — George Francis Kisiel, 62, of Bozoo, formerly of Trenton, N.J., passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.

James A. Lilly

Chessie Mae Meadows

Chessie Mae, 92, was a strong-willed and adoring woman. She left this world on October 3rd at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center after a long illness to join her devoted husband Wesley Lewis Meadows, daughter Carolyn Sue Meadows, and granddaughter Rebecca Toney. There is a joyous reunion going on in heaven!

Chessie Mae was born on February 3, 1921, to the late Edd Hayworth and Nora Jones Hayworth. She married Wesley in 1940 and they made a life in Eccles, WV, for 52 years where they raised their four daughters. Chessie was a homemaker, a volunteer for the Salvation Army, and loved going to church. She was a hard worker and strict mother, but this feisty woman knew how to have fun at rainy picnics or taking long walks. She could tell a funny story like no other, laughing out loud and smiling ear to ear. Chessie was a people person and her motto was “the more the merrier.”

Chessie’s beloved family was blessed to enjoy her life for 92 years. She is survived by her three daughters: Deanna Meadows of Crawley, WV; Brenda Meadows Barnes of Centreville, MD; and Naomi Hughes of Crawley, WV. Chessie has 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are welcome to join a memorial service and celebration of life in Chessie Mae’s honor at Wallace & Wallace funeral home in Rainelle, WV, on Monday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial services will be held at Sunset Memorial in Beckley, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Norma E. Michael

ATHENS — Norma E. Michael, 87, of Caldwell Street, Athens, formerly of Camp Creek, died early Friday morning, October 4, 2013, at the home of her son with her family by her side.

Born December 22, 1925, at Wyonake, she was the daughter of the late Elbert McBride and Kessie Lilly McBride.

Norma was a graduate of Spanishburg High School and a former employee for Maidenform Corporation in Princeton. She was a member of Stovall Ridge Freewill Baptist Church at Camp Creek.

Norma was devoted to her family, and loved giving her attention to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed working word puzzles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Michael Sr., along with three siblings: Mabel McBride, Alice Epling and Jasper McBride.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her five children: Gary and Brenda Michael of Richmond, VA, Dennis and Connie Michael of Athens with whom she made her home, Victor and Pamela Michael of Callahan, FL, Drema and Dennis O’Brien of Stuart Draft, VA, and John Michael Jr. of Camp Creek.

Five grandchildren: Bobby and Kristin Michael, Amanda and Eric Palmer, Steven and Juanita Michael, Julie and Frank Engler, Kristie and Jackie Combs.

10 great-grandchildren: Erica, Jordan and Zoe Combs, Ian and Thomas Michael, Avery and Morgan Michael, Maggie Goodrich, Gigi and Noah Engler.

A very special adopted daughter and caregiver, Carrie Worley.

One brother: Lee “Buddy” and Frances McBride of Florida.

A host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2013, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Orville Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Princeton.

Janie Lee Moore, 62, of Beckley, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.

Charles (Cotton) Sawyers

BACKUS MOUNTAIN — Charles (Cotton) Sawyers, 84, of Backus Mtn., passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

Born April 13, 1929, at Backus Mountain, he was the son of the late Elmer and Eliza Pugh Sawyers.

Charles was a coal miner for 38 years. The last place he worked was the Slab Fork Coal Company. He loved to work in his garden and go to the flea market.

He is preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Capps of Alabama, two brothers, Elmer Sawyers and Jimmy Sawyers, four sisters, Virginia Jones, Inez Neely, Joann Grubb and Emogene Goins.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty (Wenger) Sawyers, 2 sons, Darrell Sawyers of Schaumburg, IL, and Dale Sawyers of Backus Mtn., WV; 1 daughter, Vickie Zickafoose and husband L.A. of Backus Mtn., WV; 5 grandchildren, Charles Sawyers and wife Kathy of L.I.T.H., SC, Brian Sawyers of Schaumburg, IL, Eric Sawyers and wife Jennifer of Layland, WV, Jason Zickafoose and fiancée Kristin of Backus Mtn., WV, and Amy Zickafoose, and fiancé Matt of Natural Bridge, VA; 2 stepgrandchildren, Megan Weatherford and husband Will of Fayetteville, WV, and Steve Young and wife Samantha of Loland, NC, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Nutter officiating.

Charles H. Shumaker

GREENWOOD, S.C. — Charles H. Shumaker, 86, of Greenwood, SC, passed away on October 2, 2013, after a short illness.

He was born August 19, 1927, in Sanger, WV, to the late Henry and Blanche Persinger Shumaker.

Charles retired from the United States Army as a sergeant major having bravely fought in the Korean War. He was actively involved with the VFW, 18 years with the enforcement torch run for Special Olympics, KWVA, and many other community services.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Delphia L. Shumaker of Greenwood, SC; daughters, Carol Cundiff of Roanoke, VA, Charlene Treon of Greenwood, SC; sons, Arthur Buckalew of Lakeland, FL, Daniel Buckalew of Oak Hill; sister, Frances Dempsey of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Jamie R, Jessica, Amie, Erilk, Kiley, Jami, Anisa, Joey, Craig, and also 8 great-grandchildren.

He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013, at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at High Lawn Funeral Home in Oak Hill.

Morgan Breanna Welch Smith

PAX — Morgan Breanna Welch Smith, age 26, of Pax, along with her infant daughter Isabella Noelle passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born on September 10, 1987, in Cumberland, Md., and was the adopted daughter of Walter and Phyllis Welch of Shady Spring and was the biological daughter of Mark Welch and his wife Lisa of Statesville, N.C.

Morgan was a former employee of Lowe’s of Beckley and Staples Office Supplies in Beckley. She was a 2004 graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended New River Technical College and the Statesville Christian School in Statesville, N.C. (until the 10th grade). Morgan was a member of the North Gate Baptist Church in Beckley, and had been attending the Calvary Assembly of God in Beckley.

She competed in barrel and endurance racing as a young girl for several years. She placed third place for 25 miles in her age group in the endurance racing. She always had a love for horses. 

Morgan was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jack and Evelyn Walker, and Walter and Kizzie Welch. She was also preceded in death by an aunt who was very dear to her, Kathy Bodiford, and also by an aunt Christine Barnes.

Survivors include her children, two daughters, Haylea Breann Smith and Skyler Grace Brown, and a son Michael Lowell Smith; a sister, Crysta Noel Welch of Statesville, N.C.; stepsisters, Ashley Niccole Wardell of Newton, N.C., Stephanie Elyse Bledsoe and her husband Michael of Mocksville, N.C.

Morgan was loved by all who knew her, and will be missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Pastor John Jordan officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Luther Howard Stover

TEMPLE, Ga. — Mr. Luther Howard Stover, age 85, of Temple, Georgia, passed away Friday, October 4, 2013. Mr. Stover was born in Overton County, Tennessee, on April 25, 1928. He was the son of the late Alexander Martin Stover and the late Myrtle Ruble Stover. Mr. Stover was retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He was also the retired owner of Atlanta Door Controls. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Lockhart Stover.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cynthia Stover of Roanoke, VA; one brother and sister-in-law, Hank and Louise Stover of Alpine, TN; two grandchildren, Scarlett Stover and Graceson Stover; and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. from Gordon Freewill Baptist Church in Rainelle, WV. Interment will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Crawley, WV.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Monday afternoon at the Church from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
