Jack Richard Adkins

Jack Richard Adkins died Dec. 6, 2013.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Tony’s Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Tony’s Branch, with Pastor Roger Halstead, Pastor Jr. Perdue and Troy Howerton officiating and singer Pastor Jr. Perdue. Interment will be in Adkins Cemetery, Joe’s Creek. Visitation will begin two hours before the service at the church.

George ‘Mike’ Bailey

On Thursday, Dec. 5th, 2013, our beloved George “Mike” Bailey of Holly Hills died of injuries received in a farm accident. He was 60 years of age.

One of four children, “Mike” as he was affectionately known was born George Michael Bailey on July 12, 1953. His parents were the late Carl and Louise King Bailey. Mike is the fond brother of Mary, Anita and Kenny.

Mike was a retired coal miner. He enjoyed walking in the woods with his beagles and loved his rescued dogs. He also enjoyed horses and rabbit hunting. Mike Bailey was loved by all who knew him. His memory will be forever cherished.

In 1985, he married Cheryl Daniel, daughter of the late Cody and Dolores Daniel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Cheryl’s son, Jonathan Cody. Wayne Tolliver, Mike’s best friend from childhood, survives as well.

On Tuesday, December 10th, at 1 p.m. we will remember the life of Mike Bailey with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Paul Zutaut will be officiating. Mike will be laid to rest in the Edward Daniel Cemetery at Saxton.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Linda Lou Brannen

Linda Lou Brannen, 61, of Beckley, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born April 26, 1952, in Point Pleasant, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Jacob and Bessie Waugh Scarberry.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Dolly Brannen; brother, Ray Scarberry; and sisters, Judy Holland and Ruth Mobley.

Linda was a waitress at Bob Evans Restaurant. She had a very strong work ethic. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching movies.

She is survived by sons, Matthew Brannen of Prosperity and Michael Brannen of Beckley; grandchildren, Gage, Michael, Jr., Donavan, Delainey and Brooklyn; brother, Billy Scarberry; and sisters, Norma Sutphin and Sue Wysell; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 700 Maxwell Hill Road, Beckley, with Pastor Wanda Childs officiating.

Dave Carl Dickens, 87, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.

Frances Alice Lane

Frances Alice Lane, 69, of Beckley, passed away December 5, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness. Born at Kathryn, WV, she was the daughter of the late Jennings Carl Kincaid and Prinzie Fay Lawhorn Kincaid Fox and stepfather, Carl R. Fox. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Other than her parents she is preceded in death by two infant siblings, a brother James Ray Kincaid, a sister, Diana Lynn Martin, three half brothers, Willard, Winifred “Tink” and Walter Kincaid, a half sister, Kathleen Bragg.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Karen Miller and her husband Eddie, of Beckley; and a son Bill Lane and his wife Martha, of Russellville.

Grandchildren that survive are Scott Miller and wife Meredith, Amanda Moore and husband Steve, Daniel Asbury and Joanna Asbury and Tanner Carte.

Four sisters, Jeanie Eyler and husband Jim of Scottsboro, AL, Fay Turner and husband Tom of Wayside, Dottie Herndon and husband Jimmy of Ballard, and Rachael “Dolly” Teel of Ohio.

Special friends Becky Kovacic and Dixie Howell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with Freddie Lovell officiating. Burial will follow in the Fox Cemetery at Crickmer.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Katherine Furry Richmond

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Katherine Furry Richmond, 58, of White Sulphur Springs, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.

Mary Katrine ‘Brown’ Roy

RACINE — Mary Katrine “Brown” Roy of Racine, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013..

Harry Smith Jr.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Harry Smith Jr., age 75, of Thomasville, NC, formerly of Mabscott, WV, passed away at his home on Friday, December 6, 2013.

Born on August 11, 1938, at Fireco, he was the son of the late Harry Wilburn Smith and Mary Elizabeth Hodge Smith.

Harry was the owner of Harry’s Appliance Sales and Repairs business in Thomasville, NC, for 35 years. He loved the challenge of fixing appliances.

Harry served in the United States Marine Corps.

Harry and his wife Ann loved to travel. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna L. Lilly Smith; sister Mary Moore; brothers, Bobby Ray, Jimmy and Buster Smith; stepson Donald Lilly; and 2 grandsons Ryan Alan Staffard and Michael Mahan, and one granddaughter Donna Diane Mahan.

Survivors include his daughters, Leson Smith and her husband Bob of Clearwater, Florida; Linda Stafford and her husband Randall of Maben, WV; stepdaughter Donna Smith and her husband Jimmy of Thomasville, NC; Three sisters, Lucille Connell and her husband Harold of Versailles, Indiana, Rosie Lindsey of Mabscott, and Betty Smith and her husband Thurman of Letart, WV. A brother, Wilburn Smith of White Oak, WV.  

Fourteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; God-Father to Michael Lindsey, and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Church of God Family Worship Center, 224 Pinewood Drive, Beckley, WV, on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jesse Farley and Pastor Stacy Dingess officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park at 1915 Harper Road, Beckley.  Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Tuesday.

Maurice Hanes Smith, 78, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.

Wanda Yvonne White

Wanda Yvonne White, 78, of Beckley, formerly of Mullens, WV, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 7, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

She was born on March 19, 1935, to the late Raymond Ray Johnson and Lucille Belle Fox Johnson.

She was a beautician and owned and operated her own salon, Wyoming Beauty Salon in Mullens, WV, for 24 years.

She was a member of the BETA SIGMA PHI Sorority for 45 years. Wanda was very active in her sorority and met many lifelong friends that she cherished.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis June Johnson, Barbara Williams, Helen Ratliff, and a brother Roger Johnson.

Wanda is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Harold Owen White of Beckley, WV, her daughter Kim White, at home, who was by her side; son and daughter-in-law Greg White and Donna Slayton of Charleston, son and daughter-in-law Brad White and Lisa Samples White of Charleston, grandson Hunter White, granddaughters Alexa, Bria and Braelyn White of Charleston; sisters, Betty Graham of Mullens, WV, and Patty Bard of Westerville, OH. She is also survived by many caring relatives and friends.

Wanda White was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She devoted her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She took pride in family traditions, hosting a Christmas Breakfast every year, where she would cook her famous Ham and Gravy for her entire extended family to enjoy. She loved to bake and always took on the challenge to try a new recipe.

A tribute to the life of Wanda White will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, with Pastor Roger Adams officiating.  Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Princeton, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ronald Edward Wilson

Ronald Edward Wilson, 72, of Beckley went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at his residence following a courageous battle with COPD.

Born March 4, 1941, in Pemberton, he was the son of the late Evert and Lettie Lester Wilson.

Ronald was a veteran of the United States Military serving proudly in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Following his service to his country, he began a 30-year career as a truck driver. He was a member of the Camp Creek Community Church. He enjoyed shooting pool, bowling and fishing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Loretta Wilson Gerds.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Gladys “Kitty” Wilson, his children Ronnie Wilson Jr. and Myra Sue Wilson. His stepchildren Johnny Carrico, Jimmy Oliver and his wife Jennifer, Harvey Longee, and Kim Radtke. Eight grandchildren. His sister, Ramona Wilson Motter, His brothers Howard “Buddy” Wilson, and Mark Wilson and his wife Serina, and last but certainly not least his pets that were the pure joy of his life, Mo Mo and Barkley, and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

Services will be Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with full military graveside honors.

The family will receive friends from Noon until Service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family ask that donations of Sympathy be made in Ronald’s memory to the Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
