On Wednesday, August 21st, 2013, after a long and full life, Kenneth Mills of Beckley passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a three day illness. He was in his 92nd year.
The fifth of nine children, Noah Kenneth Mills was born on Nov. 23rd, 1920, at Egeria. He was the son of the Willie Lee and Ethel Wood Mills. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Kenneth, as he was affectionately known, spent his early years at Egeria. He was a graduate of Egeria High School. After high school, he went to work in the mining industry. With the outbreak of World War II, he entered the U.S. Army. Kenneth was truly “One of the Greatest Generation.” Serving in the European Theater, he was with the 253rd Infantry, Company F, during the invasion of Normandy, France, on D Day and in the Battle of the Bulge. Kenneth would fight for his country throughout all of Central Europe.
Upon his discharge in 1945, Kenneth took advantage of the GI Bill and studied barbering in Richmond, Va. He owned the successful Mills Barber Shop on Neville Street, in the city of Beckley for over 40 years.
Kenneth was a blessed man. Active to his final days, he was still gardening and golfing at the age of 92.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Macel Walker Mills. Kenneth and Macel worshiped at the Memorial Baptist Church, where they are members of the Outreach Sunday School Class. To their union was born two children, Joan Mills who makes her home in Greensboro, N.C. and son, Alan Mills who died in Feb. of 2008. There is one grandchild, Alan’s son, Noah Alan Mills and his mother, Angela Mills Russo. Kenneth was the fond uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.
