Sara Elizabeth Butler Bethel

RONCEVERTE — Sara Elizabeth Butler Bethel, 88, passed away at her residence Wednesday morning, Aug. 21, 2013, with her family and friends by her side.

Sara was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Ronceverte and was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Ola Reynolds Butler.

Educated in local schools where she served as class president each year at Greenbrier High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. Graduated in 1943 from Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg. Before her marriage, she was associated with the First National Bank in Ronceverte where she was secretary to C. Edwin Boone and his son, W.A. Boone, both of whom were presidents of the bank.

Sara married John P. Bethel in 1952 and they lived in Augusta, Ga. for 30 years.

While in Augusta, Sara was chosen as one of two first female deacons of the Greenstreet Presbyterian Church and awarded a lifetime membership. She was also a member of the Augusta Opera Board for 10 years. Upon moving home to Ronceverte, she served as an Elder of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a sister, Virginia B. Blake; niece, Beverly B. Boswell; nephew, William B. Blake, all of Ronceverte; niece, Kay Alexander of Williamsburg, Va.; great-nephews, Troy Boswell of Pompano Beach, Fla. and C. Brad Boswell of San Diego, Calif.; great-great niece, Brooke A. Boswell of Tempe, Ariz.; several cousins and care giver, Barbara Whanger Gabbert.

Services for Mrs. Bethel will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stephen Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte.

The family will receive their family and friends on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ronceverte.

Flowers are welcome and any memorial contributions should be made to Hospice Care or to the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church.

Pallbearers will be Chester Loudermilk, Roger Carr, Bob Slaven, Gary Weikle, John Gillispie, Tom Long and Jack Tuckwiller. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the church, Mike Rodoussakis, Keith Morgan, Steve Harris, Mike WIlliams, Chris Glover, J.D. Lassiter and Dudley Bare.
