Hazel Mae Hendricks

FORT SPRING — Hazel Mae Hendricks, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center.

Mrs. Hendricks was born June 23, 1923, at Fort Spring and was the daughter of the late Charles Alex and Lillian Persinger Brooks.

She spent and dedicated her life to her church and was a founding member of the Fort Spring Missionary Baptist Church where she held and did most positions within the church from custodial care to Sunday School teacher.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Hendricks; grandson, Frank Bush; sons, Tommy Lee Hendricks, Jimmy Dale Hendricks and Ronald Adkins; sisters, Margaret Poe and Elsie Gregory; brothers, Howard, Homer, Hubert, Paul “Sonny,” Robert and Roy Brooks.

Mrs. Hendricks is survived by a daughter, Emma Jean (Andy) Burns of Glace; sons, Melvin E. (Lorena) Hendricks of Sinks Grove and Joe (Cathy) Hendricks of Frankford; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews; sisters, Juanita Canterbury of Ronceverte and Wanda Bradley of Alderson, and brother, Arthur Brooks of Bellvue, Fla.

Services for Mrs. Hendricks will be 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at the Fort Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Cobb and Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Alderson.

The family will receive their family and friends on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Iness Okalee ‘Okie’ Meadows

Okie Meadows, age 81, of Shady Spring, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2013, peacefully at her home following a long illness.

Born on December 7, 1931, in Rhodell, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Hattie McKinney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Charles “Andrew” Meadows; sons, Donald Ray and Terry Lee Meadows; and grandsons, Michael Andrew “Mikey” and John Emerson Meadows.

Okie was a homemaker and enjoyed working the flea market in the ’70s and ’80s. She enjoyed bingo and was a devoted player for many years. Playing cards, badminton, crocheting, planting flowers, and canning were her hobbies. She always looked forward to vacation at Chincoteague Island, Va., with her family. Her passion for the ocean was something she spoke of even in her last days.

She had a heart of gold and was a great inspiration to all who knew her. She would go to extremes to help in a time of need and turned no one away.

Okie saw the good in people and always had a positive outlook. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was of the Christian faith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her six children, Danny Meadows and wife, Fonda, Mike Meadows and wife, Barbara, Larry Meadows, Barbara Marshall and husband, Harold, Sherry Hubbard and Sylvia Gaye Meadows all of Shady Spring; 29 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; 11 siblings, Clyde, Dave, Jimmy, Wayne, Calvin, Dean, and Johnny McKinney, Louise Blevins, Jeanie Stowe, Brenda England, and Diane Treadway.

Special Thank You to Fonda Meadows and Wanda Williams for the quality of care they provided each and every day. The love and compassion shown to our mother will never be forgotten. A special thank you to all of those who volunteered at a moment’s notice to give a much needed break.

In keeping with mother’s wishes, private services have already been conducted by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with entombment at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
