Anna Mae Lucas of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Pine Lodge Nursing Home, Beckley, after a long illness.

She was born February 14, 1933.

She was a devoted Christian and attended Calloway Heights Baptist Church, Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father Rev. Herbert Cook and her mother, Wavie Cook; one brother, Milford Cook of Stover, two sisters, Aline Massey of Newton, Falls Ohio, Betty Cook of Naoma, W.Va.

Those who are left to cherish her memory are her husband of 65 years, Robert Lucas of Beckley; nieces, Gloria and Scottie Stanley of Artie, W.Va., Regina and Frank Bailey of Bolt, W.Va., Delores and Jaun  Reyes of Fremont, Ind., Pauletta Evens of Toledo, Ohio, Bonnie Roebke of Toledo, Ohio, Karen Lucas of Texas, Bonnie Lucas of Bloomington, Ill., Sharon Lucas of Bloomington, Ill.; nephews, Richard Cook of Naoma, Jerry and BJ Cook of Naoma, David Massey of DE Motte, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Dora Cook of Beckley, two brothers, brothers-in-laws, Bill Cook of Naoma, Ernie Lucas of Bloomington, Ill.; several great nieces and nephews and one great niece, Alexa Reyes “Thomas”  who she considered her earthly granddaughter.

We are confident I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8 The believer not only is well assured by faith that there is another and a happy life after this is ended, but he has good hope, through grace, of heaven as a dwelling-place, a resting place, a hiding-place. In our Father’s house there are many mansions, whose Builder and Maker is God.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville. Singers will be Don and Duke and Travis Stewart.

Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call two hours before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Raymond Kellis McClaugherty

BOZOO — Raymond Kellis McClaugherty, 90, of Bozoo, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at his home.

Arrangements are incomplete at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Sergio ‘Sam’ Mosquera

LOOKOUT — Sergio “Sam” Mosquera, 85, of Lookout, WV, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Ansted Care Center, Ansted, following a long illness. He was born on November 4, 1928, in Celenova, Spain, and was the son of the late Sergio Salgado and Jovita Luaces. He came to America in 1946 and began working in the coal mines at Nuttlebury. In 1953 he started Sam’s Market at Lookout, WV, and it closed in 2007. In 1969 he started a carwash and laundry mat and the second Sam’s location at Ansted, WV.

Sam loved life, working and talking to people and he was of the Catholic Faith.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son: Sergio Mosquera, Jr., a sister Lola Castro and a brother José Mosquera.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 45 years Jewell Arbaugh Mosquera, two sons: Tony Mosquera and his wife Rita of Hico and Sammy Mosquera of Lookout. One daughter Anna Maria Mosquera of Lookout.

Two grandchildren: Joey Mosquera and his wife Mettie of Salem, Oregon, and Jennifer Ellison and husband Josh of Hico.

Three great-grandchildren: Max Mosquera of Oregon and Evan and Jasper Ellison of Hico. One sister, Esparanza Pereez of Newark, NJ., also survives.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted, with Father Carlos Melocoton officiating. He will be laid to rest on Thursday at Highlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Friends may gather with the family from 6 p.m. until service time Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Mary Katharine Armstrong Ruffing

WHITE SPRING, Fla. — Mary Katharine Armstrong Ruffing, 90 of White Spring, formerly of Richwood, W.Va., passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Pastor Ben Stone officiating.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Carroll Stanley

OAK HILL — James Carroll Stanley, 86, of Oak Hill passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014.

James was born on September 17, 1927 in Gauley Bridge, to the late Robert Stanley and Loretta Arthur Stanley King Hayes. His step father was the late George Hayes.

James retired from the Bell Telephone Co. after 41 years as a central office technician and also served in the U. S. Army and U. S. Army Reserves. James was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, Oak Hill Jaycees and also devoted hours of his time coaching little league and minor league baseball.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Ruth Bowen Stanley; sisters, Velma Kay Stanley and husband William Kincaid; and brother-in-law, Vance Stonestreet.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Jane Ellen Stanley; sons, Scott Bradley Stanley and wife Jessica, John Edward Stanley; sister, Darryl Stanley Stonestreet; grandchildren, Patricia Suzanne Plumley Kwitkin and husband Brian, Ellen Marie Plumley and fiancee’ Brian Gravely, Jacob Allen Stanley;  great-grandchildren, Matthew Caleb Ray Dixon, Ryker Charles Gravely, Abigail Jane Kwitkin and Benjaman James Kwitkin.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at High Lawn Funeral Chapel with Tom Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. until time of service.

Shelby J. Stover

Shelby J. Holstein Stover, 77 of Dorothy, went home to be with the Lord on March 29, 2014 at the Colcord home of her niece and nephew Sherry and Kevin White surrounded by her family. 

Born Nov. 15, 1936.

She was co-owner and operator of the former Stover Trucking Company and was a loving homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Leslie Layton Stover, her parents: Benny and Alma Jarrell Holstein; sister: Patsy White and brothers: Billy and Larry Holstein.

Surviving are a daughter: Teresa (Ricky) White of Dorothy; brother: Robert (Susannah) Holstein of Tennessee; sister-in-law: Lois Williams of Ohio; brothers-in-law: Wayne (Tina) Stover of Dorothy and Earl Stover of Ohio. Grandchildren: Lesley (Brandon) Buzzard, Justin (Cossandra Neece) Collins, and James and Morgan White; great-grandchildren: Layton Collins, Caydon, London and Brianon Buzzard and Kingston Collins.

The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers and friends for their love and support during her illness.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Freedom Pentecostal Church Ameagle with Scotty Stanley, Steve Massey, Janice Florentz and Mike Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Estep Cemetery, Ameagle where the pallbearers will be family and friends.  Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Helena Shawver Tully

QUINWOOD — Helena Shawver Tully, 92, of Quinwood, passed away Sunday morning, March 30, 2014, at her home, following a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 2, 1921, at Quinwood, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Nettie Ann Dorsey Shawver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil V. Tully in 1978; three sisters, Idella Coulter, Irene Fleshman and Helen Campbell, and a brother, Jennings Shawver.

Helena was a member of Quinwood United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She also worked as a beautician for several years in her younger days.

Those left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Vicki Tully Reed (Howard) of Quinwood; granddaughter, Christy Reed Critchley (Matt) of Chapmanville, W.Va.; two great-grandsons, Elliott and Easton Critchley of Chapmanville, W.Va.; and a sister, Pauline Bowling Welch of White Sulphur Springs.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Verlin Butcher officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, W.Va.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service (1 to 2 p.m.) at the funeral home.
