Kenton T. ‘Ted’  Bartgis

HINTON — Kenton T. “Ted” Bartgis, 94, of 300 Miller Avenue, Hinton, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Main Street Care in Hinton after a long illness.

Born August 11, 1919, he was the son of the late Blanche Bartgis and George Bartgis.

Ted was a World War II veteran who proudly served in the United States Navy. He loved his job as a conductor with CSX Transportation. He was an avid hunter, a member of The Turkey Hunters’ Hall of Fame, a fisherman and gardener. He was a devoted Christian and family man, spending as much time with his children and grandchildren as possible. He was a deacon in The First Baptist Church of Hinton. He looked forward to his reunion with his Lord Jesus Christ. He will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Mann Bartgis, and by two of his grandsons, Shannon Bartgis and Richard Bennett. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors are his two sons, J. Kent Bartgis and wife Lou of Hinton and M. Keith Bartgis and wife Laurie of Charlotte, NC, and his daughter, Loue Ann Bennett and husband Robert of Hinton. Ten grandchildren, Bryen Bartgis and wife Lisa, Kari Vicars and husband Chris, Alissa Grindstaff, Natalie Weaver and husband Matt, Michael Bartgis, Leslie Wooten, Scott Wooten and wife Shannon, Hope Jones and husband Brent, Daniel Halloran and wife Karen and Robert Bennett, Jr., and wife Kelly; seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Hinton with Pastors Butch Honaker and Jeff Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Norma Jean Blackburn, 82, of Crab Orchard, died Monday, March 10, of injuries she received in an automobile accident.

KEYROCK — Mary Lunda Johnson Brooks, 82, of Keyrock, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014.

Mary Virginia ‘Jenny’ Hensley Elmore Fisher

Mary Virginia “Jenny” Hensley Elmore Fisher, age 78, of Raleigh, W.Va., passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at her home.

Born on August 23, 1935, at Ury, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Vincen Hensley and Nora Isabelle Grose Hensley.

Mrs. Fisher was retired from Raleigh General Hospital in the dietary department. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Corbert Elmore, and her second husband, John Andrew Fisher; a son James Delley Elmore; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; by brothers, Charles Vencen Hensley Jr., George Barnett Hensley, William McKinley Hensley, Thomas Wayne Hensley, by sisters, Chloe Lavonne Cox, Opal Mae Perry, Erma Jean “Wanda” Moore.

Surviving children, Kenneth “Elmo” Elmore and his companion Tiffany Bailey of Beckley, Robert Dean Elmore of Raleigh, Belinda Weeks of North Carolina, Billy Elmore and wife Nancy of Beckley, and Debra Cozart of Beckley; two sisters, Beulah Lee Smith of Helen, and Lillian Bernice Distin of Smithsburg, Md.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.

The family extends special thanks to Nancy Elmore and to the Hospice of Southern WV and staff.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, March 17, 2014, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Monday.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Sarah H. Workman Gillespie

Sarah H. Workman Gillespie, 84, of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Born on October 26, 1929, in McDowell County, she was preceded in death by her loving parents, Nancy Ann Rose and James W. Lester.

She was retired from Hills Department Store and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed visiting and talking with family and friends, shopping, cooking, and gardening. 

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Auther L. Workman, her second husband, Jess Gillespie, a daughter, Merry E. Redden, a granddaughter, Brandi Lynn McKay, and several brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include a grandson, Stephen L. Workman and wife, Tammy, of Backus Mountain, a granddaughter, Sarah R. Richmond of Beckley, and three great-grandsons, Corey L. Workman, Brandon M. Vaught and Jennings (J.W.) Richmond, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Doug Walls officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Jessie Marceany Jean Penson and Remington Red Penson

Our precious and much loved babies, Jessie Marceany Jean Penson, 1, and Remington Red Penson, 3 months old, both of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

The children of Kyle Ralph and Ashley Kincaid Penson of Oak Hill, Jessie was born October 22, 2012, at Beckley, and Remington was born December 11, 2013, at Beckley.

In addition to their parents, Jessie and Remington are survived by a brother, Kyle Ralph Jager; grandparents, Melinda Kincaid of Oak Hill and Phillip Adkins of Glen Jean; great-grandfather, Ralph Penson of Corning, Ohio, and aunts and uncles, Josh, Doug and Danny Kincaid and Harold and Kathy Miller, all of Oak Hill.

Joint funeral services will be on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Bill Fedukovich officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Edward ‘Eddie’ Lee Riffe

NORTH CAROLINA — Mr. Edward “Eddie” Lee Riffe, 56, formerly of Jesse, died March 2, 2014, in Greensboro, N.C.

He was born August 11, 1957, in Pineville, to Ernest and Vivian Riffe.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Riffe, and a brother, Clyde Riffe.

Eddie was a member of Winston Salem First Assembly of God.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 36 years, Debbie Riffe of Walnut Cove, a daughter, Angela Riffe of Winston-Salem, two grandchildren who were his life: Trey Myers who has lived with his Papa and Nana since birth and Mackenzie George of Winston-Salem who was Papa’s little girl; his mother, Vivian Bailey of Oceana, a brother, Lewis Riffe and wife, Karen, of Oceana, a niece, Kristin Riffe of Oceana, and a nephew, Jason Riffe and wife, Kristy, of Marlinton, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held at Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, on Saturday, March 15th, at 2 p.m., with Pastor J.L. Riffe and Elwood Rakes officiating.

Family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

William Clarence Shrewsberry, 71, of Barkers Ridge, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Warren Cecil Stanley

SCARBRO — Warren Cecil Stanley, 69, of Scarbro, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

He was born on August 5, 1944, in Winfield, Kansas.

He was a truck driver by profession and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era having served in Munich, Germany.

He was preceded in death by parents Waren and Marie Stanley; mother, Gladys Devitts; brother, Michael Stanley.

Those left to cherish his memory include daughter, Christina Stanley, and son, Steven Stanley, of Scarbro, brothers, Jeff, Rick, Tommy, Jerry, Hamy; sisters, Lori, Kim, Dede, Tracy, Angela, all of Kincaid, Charlie and Brenda of Texas; grandchildren, Jack Pizzino and Steven Stanley.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at High Lawn Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Bobby Adkins officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.

NEOLA — Bobby Gene Vance, 54, of Neola, died Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Gene Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in Mapledale Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the funeral home.

Jeff Thomas Williams

Jeff Thomas Williams, 91, of Rock Creek, W.Va., died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the home of his daughter, Gloria.

Born January 6, 1923, at Clear Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Everett and Ida Perry Williams.

Mr. Williams was a retired coal miner. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

His wife, Virginia Arbutus Dunbar Williams, preceded him in death as did an infant daughter, Beulah Faye Williams, and a great-grandson, Kevin Malone.

The last of his immediate family, he was also preceded by three brothers, Azel Williams, Doris Williams and Sherman Williams, and three sisters, Laura Mullins, Janie Williams and Clara Wriston.

Survivors include daughter, Gloria Jean Williams Turner of Rock Creek; three sons, Larry Williams and wife, Joyce, of Missouri, Richard Williams of Beckley and Allen Williams and wife, Delores, of Midway; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Workman’s Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Newman officiating. Burial will be at Workman’s Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Saturday, March 15, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Charles Edward Wiseman

HINTON — Charles Edward Wiseman, 62, of 1208 Taylor St., Hinton, died Wednesday,  March 12, 2014, at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born July 31, 1951, in Hinton, he was the son of Clarence Ashby Wiseman of Hinton and the late Marie Rakes Wiseman.

Charles was retired from Summers County Hospital with 26 years of service. He was also a former employee of Cone Mills Manufacturing in Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of Bellepoint Baptist Church in Hinton and enjoyed gardening. Charles was a loving husband and father and was a faithful Christian who loved the Lord.

Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Lilly.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Ruby Meadows Wiseman; two sons, Charles Wiseman Jr. of Rainelle and Christopher Wiseman and wife Charity of Reidsville, N.C.; one daughter, Charlene Krausman of Selma, N.C.; three stepsons, Matthew Katz and Samuel Katz and wife Rebecca, both of Massachusetts, and Mark Katz of North Carolina; one stepdaughter, Dawn Rodes and husband David of Connecticut; three sisters, Norma Gunter and husband Bob and Sherry Gwinn and husband Chuck, both of Hinton, and Debbie Wiseman of Beckley; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Chris Price officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until time of services on Monday at the funeral home.
