Enid Mavis Bailey

PINOAK — Enid Mavis Bailey, 86, of Pinoak, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born September 14, 1927, at Pinoak, she was the daughter of the late Tressie McComas and Crancy Mills McComas.

Mrs. Bailey brought her family to West Virginia from south Georgia in 1964. She was a graduate of the first nursing class at Bluefield State College in 1969. She became the nursing supervisor at Princeton Community Hospital until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Church in Lashmeet. She loved quilting, traveling and especially spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Walter Victor Fletcher Sr.; her second husband, Denzel Bailey; her daughter, Marcia Lynn; one sister, Ramona; one brother, Tressie McComas Jr.; and a grandson, Marshall Victor Fletcher.

Survivors include two sons, Victor Fletcher and his wife Lorraine of Daniels and Norman Fletcher and his wife Alice of Pinoak; one daughter, Teresa Brown and her husband Chuck of Pinoak; one sister, Nadine Shrewsbury of Pinoak; four grandchildren, Melissa May, Ashley Foley, Shanna Meadows and Nicklaus Fletcher; nine great-grandchildren, Brittini Orcutt, Alexis and Madison May, David and Kelly Fletcher, Laiken Johnston, Reegan Sexton and Riley and Kinley Meadows; one great-great-grandson, Brycen Orcutt; and another Orcutt on the way.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Elder Keith Mills and the Rev. Roy Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the McComas-Crotty Cemetery at Pinoak.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ashley Foley, Nicklaus Fletcher, David Fletcher, Brian May, D.J. Meadows, Matt Orcutt and William Rutledge.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 15, 2014, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

HINTON — Russell Junior “Shorty” Bennett, 54, passed away March 12, 2014.

Lincoln J. ‘Sammy’ Board

Lincoln J. “Sammy” Board, 69, of Beckley, passed away March 6, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born February 27, 1945, in East Gulf, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert Lincoln Board and Willie Mae Hopkins.

Mr. Board was a United States Air Force Veteran having served his country during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Stratton high School, Raleigh County Vocational School, Electric Wiring, Beckley College with a Liberal Arts Degree, was also a Jamaica carpet fly by nighter and he worked at Beckley VA Medical Center as a Food Service worker for 10  years, and was a member of American Legion Post 32. 

Preceded in death by two sisters, Mae N. Carmichael and Nugie Miranda Campbell, and one brother, Robert (Penny) Board.

Survived by one daughter whom he loved dearly: Leila (Bred rick) Bussey of Minot, N.D.;  two sons, Barry Sarratt of Henderson Bill, N.C., and Lincoln B. (Teresa) Ware of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Juanita “Cindy” Board of Tennessee and Marion Arberbella Howard of New York; one brother, William Joe Board of Ohio and one sister-in-law Charley Board of New York; 15 grandchildren, Tobias Bussey, Demetrius Landrum, Quamaine Landrum, Dequane Landrum, Cardeill Harvey, Kenyeil Evans, Demetria Sarratt, Hy’Kem Sarratt, Orlando Sarratt, Aliyah Ware, Bianca Ware, Christopher Ware, Monica Ware, Sacorya Ware and Lincoln T. Ware; a special friend Michelle Mickey Risner of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 129 Rice Street, Beckley, with Revs. Walter Leach and Nathaniel Carey officiating. Family viewing one hour prior to services. Burial will be Monday at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, W.Va., with Military Honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be George (Buck) Lee, Milford Mayo, William Mayo Jr. and Khawann Howard.

Duane F. ‘Duke’ Calloway

MOUNT HOPE — Mr. Duane F. “Duke” Calloway, 60, of Mt. Hope, died Monday, March 3, 2014.

Born March 30, 1953, he was the son of the late L.S. and Mary Evelyn Jones Calloway.

Mr. Calloway was a 1971 graduate of Mt. Hope High School and attended Shepherd College where he played football. He was employed as a correctional officer, postal clerk, security worker, and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, L.S. “Petey” Calloway Jr., and sister Nancy McNeill.

Left to cherish precious memories are his daughter, Lavonne Brooks of Texas; brothers, John (Hazel) of Columbus, Ohio, Bill (Jean) and Leroy (Portia), all of Maryland, Norman of South Carolina, and Charles Michael (Veronica) of Oklahoma; sisters, Judith Gambill of Galax, Va., and Mary (Warren) Armstead of Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at United Missionary Baptist Church, 205 South Fayette Ave., Mt. Hope, with Rev. Phillip E. Copney Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Beulah ‘Katie’ Davidson

FAYETTEVILLE — Beulah “Katie” Davidson, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

Born on May 3, 1925, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Orie Earl Bennett and Nancy Opal Waddell Bennett.

Katie was a member of Fayetteville Presbyterian Church. She was secretary for over 23 years for the town of Fayetteville before retiring.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frederick A. “Fred” Davidson; sister, Marie Dickinson; brother, Alton Bennett; and in-laws, Mary Foster, Edith Spath, Claude Davidson, John Davidson, and James Davidson.

Left to cherish her memory include her brother-in-law, Eugene “Foster” Foster of Fayetteville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Interment will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Frances June Galloway

HINTON — Frances June Galloway, 85, of Hinton, died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale after a long illness.

Born January 8, 1929, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Lucille Webster Carter.

Mrs. Galloway was a former employee of the Hinton Hospital having worked in the housekeeping department. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Galloway, a daughter, Dorothy Carter, a brother, Russell Carter, and four sisters, Barbara Carter, Susie Mae Tinsley, Phyllis Carter and Roberta Saunders.

Survivors include six sons, Hiawatha Carter of Hinton, Paul Edward Parks of Detroit, Mich., Bobby Galloway of Hinton, Danny Galloway of Hinton, Charles Conner of Arlington, Va., and Don Galloway of Hinton; four daughters, Sonia Galloway of Hinton, Phyllis Galloway of Arlington, Va., Helen Galloway of Hinton and Michelle Kpah of Falls Church, Va.; one brother, Carl Carter of Hinton, and one sister, Sandra Mann of Hinton. Thirty-nine grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Homegoing celebration service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Rev. Matthew Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Esquire Cemetery near Hinton.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.

Lorraine Diane Green

BLAND, Va. — Lorraine Diana Green, 61, of Bland, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014.

Born on June 28, 1953, in Cub Creek, W.Va., to Friedman Cline and Bertha Blankenship Cline.

Ms. Green was a homemaker and previously worked as an accountant. She had a passion to help others and never asked anything in return. She enjoyed golfing and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Benny Cline.

Survivors include her fiancé, Bill Sovine, of Bland, and sisters, Linda Schiphof and Loeda Jackson and her husband Gleason.

In keeping with Lorraine’s final wishes her services will be held private.

Kermit Gunnoe

“And ye now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.“ John 16:22.

Before the dawn on the morning of Tuesday, March 11, 2014, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather entered the gates of Heaven to abide forever with his Heavenly Father.

Born on September 24, 1928, at Bolt, Kermit Preston Gunnoe was the son of the late Arlie Gunnoe and Maggie Manning Gunnoe.

Mr. Gunnoe was retired from Peabody Coal Company and was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Combs, Irene Lafferty, Thelma Simerly, and by a brother Delmar Gunnoe.

He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Eunice Acord Gunnoe; a son, Danny Gunnoe and his wife Diana of Rock Stream, N.Y., and a daughter Darlene Wright and her husband Jackie of Bolt. Four grandchildren, Adam Wright of Bolt, Melissa Prichard and her husband Caleb of Bolt, Tammy Salvatore and her husband Lee of Dundee, N.Y., and Shawn Gunnoe and his wife Amber of Granite Falls, N.C.; three great-granddaughters, Karsey, Natalee, and Mylee Prichard; five great-grandsons, Cody, Shane, and Logan Salvatore, Ethan Gunnoe and Cooper Durham. Two sisters, Shirley Cox of Harper, and Pauline Payne of Pomeroy, Ohio; two brothers, Arthur Gunnoe of Harper, and Don Gunnoe of Mt. Hope. A host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dean Adams officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mildred Gross Lilly

Mildred Gross Lilly, of Shady Spring, departed for her heavenly home on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. 

Born January 19, 1927, Mildred was the daughter of the late Bill and Opal Gross of Beaver.

She was the second of nine children. Mildred graduated from the Raleigh General School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and worked most of her career at Raleigh General Hospital. She loved her profession and was dedicated to helping others.

In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Lilly, and sister, Athlene (Tootsie) Jolly.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Eddie Lilly and wife, Margaret, of Shady Spring and David Lilly also of Shady Spring. In addition she had six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Others who will lovingly remember Mildred include brothers Kenneth Gross and wife, Ina, Ardith (Wink) Gross and wife, Margaret, Sam Gross and wife, Virginia, Tom Gross and wife, Helen (Cookie); along with sisters Ann Bailey and husband, Fred, Corene (Coe) Phillips and Naomi (Na) Williams and husband, Luen; and a host of nieces, nephews, special friends, neighbors and the caring staff of The Villages of Greystone and Hospice Home Care.

Mildred was a member of The Open Door Church of Shady Spring. She loved and served her Lord well. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, sewing, playing games, bowling and especially cooking for others.

A celebration of Mildred’s life will be Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley with the Rev. Donald (Doc) Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Worley Cemetery at Jumping Branch.

Family and friends may call prior to the service Saturday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

William K. Owens, 62, of Sophia, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Jessie Marceany Jean Penson and Remington Red Penson

Our precious and much loved babies, Jessie Marceany Jean Penson, 1, and Remington Red Penson, 3 months old, both of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

The children of Kyle Ralph and Ashley Kincaid Penson of Oak Hill, Jessie was born October 22, 2012, at Beckley, and Remington was born December 11, 2013, at Beckley.

In addition to their parents, Jessie and Remington are survived by a brother, Kyle Ralph Jager; grandparents, Melinda Kincaid of Oak Hill and Phillip Adkins of Glen Jean; and aunts and uncles, Josh, Doug and Danny Kincaid and Harold and Kathy Miller, all of Oak Hill.

Joint funeral services will be on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Bill Fedukovich officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Betty Louise Perry

Betty Louise Perry, age 84, of Beaver, W.Va., formerly of Maxwell Hill in Beckley, departed this life on Monday, March 10, 2014. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a generous and loving sister, aunt, and friend.

Betty was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She then attended McMillan Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, W.Va., and graduated in 1950. She then furthered her career and education in nursing, receiving her BSN from Indiana University.

Betty had a passion for the nursing profession and served as a member of the WVNA for many years. She spent most of her career at the Beckley VA Medical Center where she retired as the Associate Chief for Nursing Service in 1985 after giving them over 30 years of dedicated service. She also was active in the NARFE after her retirement.

After leaving the VA Medical Center she continued to share her love for nursing by working with Hospice and as an instructor for the Raleigh County Vocational LPN program. 

Known affectionately as “Betty Lou” in her personal life she enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and reading.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Beckley, WV.

Betty is survived by her brother, James H. Perry and his wife Wilma of Maxwell Hill, her niece Leslie Redden and her husband Marlon of Piney View, and her great-nieces Lana and Emma Redden. She and Emma were especially close. She is also survived by cousins, Donovan Russell, Susan Stoops, and her family, and Marvin Beall.

Also very dear to her were Gary, Noah, Jane, and Patty Raines, and their spouses and  children. Family is not always defined by blood, but rather with the heart. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her, including her little dog Cody.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, March 14, 2014, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Friday.

John Burton Pizzino Jr.

MCGRAWS — John Burton Pizzino, Jr., 56, of McGraws, WV, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1957, in Pineville, WV, a son of John Burton and Velma McGlothin Pizzino, Sr., of Glen Fork.

John was a 1975 graduate of Glen Rogers High School and a retired coal miner.

Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years Edna Cheryl McMillion Pizzino of Glen Fork; a daughter Vanessa Daniel Pizzino of Glen Fork; two sons Jason Dewayne Pizzino of Danville, VA, and Burton Dustin Pizzino of Glen Fork; two sisters Debrah Hargis of Skin Fork, and Pamela (Kenny) Atkins of NC; two brothers Danny (Glenda) Pizzino of Glen Fork, and Richard (Jan) Pizzino of KY; two grandchildren Jaina Faye Pizzino and Alaina Faith Nichols; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Patricia Jean Renick Settle

Patricia Jean Renick Settle, 62, of Beckley, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born June 20, 1951, at Mill Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rondal Ray Renick and Helen H. Horvath Marian.

Patricia was a member of the Alliance Church, Oak Hill. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Fayette and Raleigh counties.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Renick, sisters, Elizabeth Ann Toney and Bammie Kay Renick, and a brother, Johnny Marian.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two children, Steven Ray Toney and Stephanie Ann Toney; three brothers, Frankie Marian of Aflex, Ky., Paul Marian and wife, Maggie, of Hot Springs, Va., and Danny Ray Renick of Scarbro; and one sister, Mary Ann Allen and husband, Joe, of Carlisle.

She is also survived by her niece and longtime caregiver, Linda Lou Green, as well as many other nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Dorothy ‘Marie’ Severt

March 8, 2014, our precious mother and grandmother, Dorthy “Marie” Severt, affectionately known as “Marie” and “Mimi” to her grandchildren, passed away.

Marie was born on July 21, 1939, and was the youngest of three children of the late Dorthy E. Hodge Harvey and Marvin G. Harvey of Corinne, W.Va.

Marie enjoyed her favorite pastimes watching “Food Network,” doing puzzle books, and especially spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Roy Jones Severt, sister, Norma Cooper; and a son Roy Jones Severt Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Joanie (Michael) Blankenship of Bolt, W.Va., a son Jesse Severt of Bolt, and a sister Carroll Thompson of Loveland, Ohio. Also surviving her are her beloved grandchildren, Christopher Browning, Kahlen Browning, Tyler Blankenship, and she will be missed by several nieces and nephews.

Marie was loved by many friends and neighbors and will be truly missed by all. The family would like to give special thanks to Mickey and Doris Reed, beloved neighbors for many years, and also her Karaoke and Giovanni families.

Visitation will held on March 14, 2014, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Breckenridge Baptist Church, Bolt, with services following at 5 p.m. Pastor Dewey Lowe will be officiating.

Juanita E. Tanner

FAYETTEVILLE — Juanita E. Tanner, 94, graduated from this life on March 12, 2014, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

She was born February 27, 1920, the youngest child of John and Rosa Simmons Rader, of Gassaway, W.Va.

Juanita spent a majority of her life in Gassaway, leaving only to move closer to her sister, Marie, in Rock Springs, Ga.

The two of them cared for their mother, who lived to be 112. As Juanita’s health began to decline, she moved to Fayetteville, to live with her son, Jack, and his wife, Marion.

Juanita was a graduate of Gassaway High School. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Rader Buick in Gassaway and later for Belknap Trailer Sales. She was a fifty-year member and Past Worthy Matron of Gassaway Chapter #32 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed knitting, travel, camping, and the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration in Shelbyville, Tenn. She was happiest with her family and driving down the road. She taught most of her seven grandsons to count by fives and tens before they started to school. She liked to play rummy and set back and she was usually scorekeeper, and she played to win!  

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Russell W. Tanner, and her son, James F. Tanner.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Costello and Marmel Brown, and brothers, Garland, Orlando “Tink,” and Lanta Rader.

Left to cherish many wonderful memories are her sons and their families: Jack and Marion Tanner of Fayetteville, W.Va.; Jerry and Jan Tanner of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a dear daughter-in-law, Dr. Mary Tanner and her husband, Homer Kemp, of Ringgold, Ga.; seven grandsons, Brian (Sonja), James, Jeffrey (Beth), Russell (Stephanie), Waide, Andrew (Jacque), Matthew (Kelly), and Charlie (Sharla); six great-grandsons R.J., Drew, Zane, Jerry, Luke, and Brock; one great-granddaughter, Abbigail; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Raleigh County Commission on Aging Day Care, and the staff at the Bowers Hospice House for their compassionate care.

Funeral services will be held at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, W.Va., with Pastor Rusty Tanner officiating on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

Friends may call from 12 p.m. until time of the service.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Barbara E. Thompson

RONCEVERTE — Barbara E. Thompson, 78, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Rhema Christian Center in Fairlea, with the Rev. Stewart Farley officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon Cemetery near Pickaway. Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral service at Rhema Christian Center.

HINTON — Charles E. Wiseman, 62, of 1208 Taylor St., died Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
