Ruby Holdred Adkins
Ruby Holdren Adkins, 87, of Crab Orchard, formerly a 30 year resident of Shelbyville, Ind., and the Kanawha Valley, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House.
Born August 3, 1925, at Sprague, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late W.D. Holdren Sr. and Ethel Lilly Holdren. Ruby was one of 10 siblings. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luther C. Adkins; four sisters, Ruth L. Scott, Geneva L. Summerville, Charlotte L. Meador, Evelyn Pettry and three brothers, W. D. Holdren Jr., Arthur E. Holdren and Ted Holdren.
Survivors include her brother, C. Arnold Holdren of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sister, Pauline Harrell of Beckley; two special nephews, Dennis Johnson of Rainier, Wash. and James Johnson of Denver, Colo.
Following her wishes she will be cremated and her ashes will be joined with her late husband. There will be no visitation.

MT. HOPE — Donald Atwood 58, of Mt. Hope went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
Born March 12, 1954, Donald was a son of the late Oscar and Stella Kirk Atwood.
Donald was interested in old cars and was a NASCAR fan. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, he was employed as a coal miner with Eccles No. 5 Coal Mines. Donald was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his sons, Ryan and Preston Atwood; brother, Ralph Edward Atwood.
Those left to cherish his memories, include his sister, Phyllis Sheets of Mt. Hope, Peggy Jones and husband Kester of Scarbro; brothers, Thomas Atwood and wife Margaret of Scarbro, John Atwood of Crab Orchard; nieces, Haley and Abigail Newman; nephew, Michael Atwood and special thanks to Jeff Bragg, who was Donald’s caretaker.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Randy Mann officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Friends may gather with the family Wednesday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillian Rockwood Blankenship, died Monday, Oct 1st, 2012, at 3:19 p.m. at her home on Lilly Street in Beckley.
A rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at the George W. Seaver Chapel. Lillian will be in repose from 6 to 8 p.m. where her friends may visit her.
The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 7th, at 3 p.m. Lillian will be laid to rest in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Monte Vista Park in Bluefield.

Jonathan Chad ‘Jarhead’ Ferris
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. — Jonathan Chad Ferris, aka Jarhead, 30, of Falling Waters, passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Cumberland, Md.
Born, February 1, 1982, in Beckley, to John C. Ferris of Hagerstown, Md. and Debra J. McClain Williams of Williamsport, Md.
He was a 2000 graduate of South Hagerstown High School Hagerstown, Md.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the 2nd Battalion 2nd Marine Division with two tours in Iraq in the Infantry.
He was employed as an Electrician with IBEW Local No. 307.
He was recently promoted to president of the Virginia Chapter of the Avengers Motorcycle Club. He was also Past Vice President of the Maryland Chapter of the Avengers Motorcycle Club.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 10 Clopper Michael Boonsboro, Md.
Besides his parents, survivors include his fiance’, Krystal L. Gale and their expected son of Falling Waters; step father, James Williams of Williamsport, Md.; sister: Holly J. Seitz and her husband Eric and their daughter Emma of Wacoma, Iowa; maternal grandmother, Nancy D. McClain of Rochester, N.H.; paternal grandparents, Gene and Bobbie Ferris of Crab Orchard.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md., on Friday, October 5, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. on Friday for the convenience of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Thom Smith officiating. Military services will be provided by Amvets Post No. 10 and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown, Md. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calvin Vale Goodwin
Calvin Vale Goodwin, age 87, of Fairdale, entered eternal rest on Friday, September 28, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House surrounded by his family.
Born October 24, 1924, in Belo, W.Va., to the late Boots Logan Goodwin and Orphie Noe Goodwin.
Mr. Goodwin was an honored World War II veteran and had received a Purple Heart. He also had previously worked in the coal mines here in West Virginia.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Ella Louise Goodwin and Garnell Goodwin Sheppard, all of whom resided in Kopperston, W.Va.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Mrs. Freda Goodwin, at home; sons, Calvin Dale Goodwin of Providence, N.C., Claude Goodwin of Matheny, and Charles Goodwin of Cyclone; daughters, Phyllis Martin of Plant City, Fla., Orphie Klinert of Burton, Mich., and Arlene Meeks of Oceana; step children, Kathy Hayes of Perterstown, Randy Ackelson of Pineville, W.Va., and Robert Ackelson of Pineville; brothers, Joe Goodwin of Kopperston and Sid Goodwin of Dunedin, Fla.; sisters, Garnett Lusk of Kopperston and Katherine (Midge) Hicks of Kopperston; numerous grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who all loved him dearly.
A celebration of Calvin’s life will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley, with Pastor Ricky Proffitt officiating, assisted by McKenzie Proffitt. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, where the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 conducting military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Deekie Goodwin, Dale Goodwin, McKenzie Proffitt, Wallace Maynard Jr., Davie Bailey, and Frank Cook.

Gradie C. Legg
SMOOT — Gradie C. Legg, 74, of Meadow Bluff, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 29, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, following a short illness.
Born June 2, 1938, at Rainelle, he was the son of the late Gradie B. and Elva Perkins Legg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jackie Lee Legg and a great-granddaughter, Bella Counts.
Gradie enjoyed hunting and training his dogs. He also liked to fish, and just being outdoors and up in the mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Carroll Legg of Meadow Bluff; four sons, Dwight Counts (Karen) of Fort Worth, Texas, Charlie Counts (Tammy) of Beaufort, S.C., John Counts (Sonjia) of Mossy, and Karl Legg of Meadow Bluff; three daughters, Gwen Webb (Terry) of Meadow Bluff, Lisa Harmon (Neal) of Knoxville, Tenn. and Kimberly Legg of Barboursville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
As per his wishes, his body will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Billy Ray McClung
FAYETTEVILLE — Billy Ray McClung, 45, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, September 26 2012, at home.
Born on December 30, 1966, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Bernard and Anna McClung.
Billy was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and graduated from the College of WV with an associate degree in Occupational Therapy. He was an outstanding football player. Previously he had worked for Lance, IGA, assistant manager for Subway, and was a former employee of Ben Franklin.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by uncles, Ray and Russell McClung; aunt, Lucille; and nephew, Craig Withrow.
Billy will be sadly missed by his sisters, Carol Hypes (Michael) and Connie Rock (Kevin); brothers, Frank McClung (companion Sue), Donald McClung, Kenneth McClung (Mandy), and Fred Hill. He was a loving uncle to Steve, Jeremy, Whitney, Casey, Jacob, Bailee, Natalie, and Kennedy.
A memorial service with family and friends will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at Pleasant View Cemetery.

Marjorie Romano Pollard
CHATHAM BOROUGH, N.J. — Marjorie Pollard (nee Romano), of Chatham Borough, died on Friday, September 28, 2012, at her home in Chatham Borough, she was 89 years old.
Mrs. Pollard was born in Madison, N.J., and lived the last 65 years in Chatham Borough.
Mrs. Pollard was a bookkeeper for a medical practice in Summit, N.J. for several years before she retired 15 years ago. Prior to that she was a bookkeeper for the Shop Rite in Florham Park for over 10 years.
During World War II, Mrs. Pollard worked at Picatinny Arsenal building bombs for the war effort and her unit received a Presidential Citation for their work.
Mrs. Pollard was married, for the last 65 years, to the late Wesley F. Pollard Sr., who just recently passed away on September 16, 2012.
She is survived by her children, Wesley F. Pollard Jr., David W. Pollard; two brothers, Nick Romano, Ron Romano, and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Flynn.
