Brenda Louise Athey

Brenda Louise McKinney Athey, 63, of 205 North Pike Street, Beckley, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at Hilltop Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Born January 20, 1949 in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Walter Delbert McKinney and Mary Francis Howerton McKinney.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter D. McKinney Jr. and Bruce Thomas McKinney.

Brenda was a 1966 graduate of Mullens High School.

Those left to cherish her memory include her three sisters, Carole Sue Bandy, Mrs. Glen Lusk (Kay) and Mrs. Kenny Sisk (Sandy) all of Beckley. She is also survived by a very special friend, Donald Blair of Crab Orchard.

We would like to thank all of the people who took care of her in any way and are too numerous to mention.

Graveside rites will be held at a later date for the immediate family.

James Elbert Bragg

James Elbert Bragg, age 78, of Piney View, passed away on Wednesday June 5, 2013, following a long illness.

James was born September 23, 1934 in Summers County. He was the son of Elbert Bragg and Bertle Cantrell.

Mr. Bragg retired as a Sergeant 1st Class from the United States Army Reserves. He was employed at the Department of Health and Human Resources for 32 years. Mr. Bragg attended Piney View Bible Church.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Bragg and sister, Charlotte Ayers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Helen Bragg; his children, Gary Bragg and wife Danita of Bradley and Teresa Armentrout and husband David of Piney View; sisters, Geraldine Harris and Christina Holland.

Services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Lloyd ‘Bud’ Burchette

PINEVILLE — James Lloyd Burchette (Bud), 82 of Pineville, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, after a long illness with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) and a paralyzed diaphragm.

Born in Davy W.Va., James was one of six children of the late Treely and Lucinda Bailey Burchette.

James was a member of the Rock Castle Baptist Church where he served several years as a trustee, deacon, and sang with the choir. He served in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant in the Korean War. He was a member of the Pineville fire department for several years and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a member of the American Legion. Additionally, he served as a member of the National Rifle Association. He worked for 30  years as the chief electrician for Consolidated Coal Company.   

James married his high school sweetheart in 1952; Miriam Lois Lester with whom he spent the rest of his life with until present date. James and Miriam traveled the world together and visited Europe on two separate occasions. They traveled throughout the United States and Canada in their motor home.

James was a great provider for his family and was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family never doubted his love for him and held him in the utmost regard. James adored his daughter Patricia Burchette Holliday and with his love, patience, and kindness taught her to be the woman she is today. James also enjoyed spending time with his grandson and taught him various skills such as hunting, fishing, golf, basketball, driving, etc. Above all else, he taught his grandson how to be a man and treat others with kindness.  

James will be sadly missed by all that knew him. James had a deep reverence for his creator which was exemplified with his kindness and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his father, Treely and mother Lucinda Burchette, and his brother Tom Burchette.

He is survived by his loving wife Miriam Lester Burchette of Pineville, daughter, Patricia Anne Holliday and husband John Holliday of Flat Top Lake, Ghent, W.Va., grandson David James Gerau and wife Eileen Marie Gerau and one great grandchild Emma Marie Gerau. Additionally he is survived by his sisters Juanita Growe, Joyce Miller, Edward (Chub) Burchette, his wife Jill, and Eugene Burchette. He is also survived by nephews and nieces; David and Phyllis Burchette, Michael and Karen Growe, Kenny and Tammy Miller, Pam and Michael Crowder, Cindy and Max Boyce, and Jeff Growe.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Doc Adkins and Rev. Evan Arkell officiating.  Entombment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny.

Friends may call on the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2013 at the funeral home.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

 Pallbearers will be deacons and trustees from the church, and grandson David.

We will meet him again in the midst of Gods glory and salvation.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Mrs. Jean Clayton, of Zanesville, formerly of Hilltop, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013.

Randell Cordell Jr.

MULLENS — Tony Randell Cordell Jr., 28, of Mullens, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 in a Charleston hospital, following injuries from a swimming accident at Lake Stephens.

Born September 13, 1984 in Beckley, he was the son of Tony Randell Cordell Sr. and his wife, Glenna, of Mullens and Tina Louise Thornton Campbell and her husband, Robert, of Corinne.

Randell was a graduate of Wyoming East High School. He had previously been employed as a fabricator. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing and especially loved spending time with his two daughters.

Randell was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harold and Juanita Cordell; maternal grandparents, Bernard Thornton and Betty Thornton Grose; and grandmother, Brenda Sizemore.

In addition to his parents, those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Jaiden and Madison Cordell and their mother and his companion, Katelyn Spencer, all of Beckley; three sisters, Angel Cordell of Mullens and Kayla Cordell of Eccles and Hannah Campbell of Corinne; two brothers, Ryan Campbell of Mullens and Christopher Campbell of Corinne; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services will be 7 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

James Dempsey Dodson

James Dempsey Dodson, age 83 of White Oak, passed away on Monday,  June 3, 2013 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born on November 8, 1929 at True, he was the son of the  late Dorcas Dayton Dodson and Sybil Marie Williams Dodson.

Mr. Dodson was a retired truck driver, and had made his home at White Oak for most of his life.   

He was preceded in death by his wife,  Elizabeth Lucille Dodson, a son James Dempsey Dodson, and brothers, Dorcas, Johnny, Marvin, and Norman Dodson.    

Surviving are his children, Carol Brammer of Cool Ridge, Shirley Martin and her husband Larry of Coal City,  Judy Thompson and fiancé George Wood of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, and Ronnie Dodson of Coal City; brother, Ronald Dodson and his wife Lois of Maryland; two sisters, Evelyn Hatcher of Virginia, and Helen Bennett of Dobson, N.C.; four grandchildren, James  Blevins, Chelsea Thompson, Kristen Hale, and Michaela Martin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday June 7, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Delmas Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Mount View Cemetery at Cool Ridge.  Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Michael Eugene ‘Mike’ Hylton

“Our Little Angel,” Michael Eugene “Mike” Hylton, age 51, of Sullivan Road, Glen Morgan, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday,  June 6, 2013 at the Raleigh Center at Daniels.

Born on August 14, 1961 in Beckley, he was the son of Shirley Walker Hylton of Sullivan Road and the late Herman Hylton.

Mike loved all sports, especially bowling and basketball. He loved music, fishing, and camping. Mike enjoyed his outings with his special Day-Hab friends. Mike loved all people, who in turn loved him deeply. He loved his church family at the Tilden Community Church, where he was a member.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Hylton, a special sister-in-law, Gladie Marie Hylton, by paternal grandparents, Henry and Pearl Hylton, and maternal grandparents, Thomas and Bertha Walker.          

Surviving other than his mother include his brother, Gerald “Bud” Hylton of Beckley; a sister, Lois Tennant and her husband Johnny of Beckley. Nieces, Sheri Hendricks and her husband Larry of Beckley, and Jennifer Laurentz and her husband Leonard of Scott Depot,   Great Nephews, Ethan, Elijah, and Evan Hendricks, Cody Boggs, Jeffrey Chaffin, and Seth Laurentz; a great niece, April Boggs. Many great aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Mike’s family extends special thanks to the caregivers at the Raleigh Center and to the Hospice of Southern WV for their excellent care and support.

“Our loss is Heaven’s gain.”

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Michael Hylton at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gene Terry officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Aster Odell Kirk

PINEVILLE — Aster Odell Kirk, 72, of Pineville, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013 following a long illness.

Born November 19, 1940 in Mingo County, he was the son of the late Edwin Pauley and Francis Gillman

Aster enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, target shooting and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sarah Broom Kirk of the residence; a son, Marcus Kirk and his wife Jackie, of Princeton; a step-son, Barney Hood of Indian Land, S.C., and a grandson, Jordon Kirk of Princeton.

A celebration of Aster’s life will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, June 7, 2013 in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Richie Walker officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, Pecks Mill, W.Va.

James Henry Leftwich

James Henry Leftwich, 86, of Beckley, saw the setting of the sun on May 30, 2013. The sun rose for him on April 15, 1927.

James Henry was born to Oscar Leftwich and Nannie English in Jenkin Jones, W.Va.  In addition to his parents,  he was preceded in death by two daughters, Nannie Leftwich and Glaydine Webb; two sisters, Betty Timmons and Christine Clark; four nephews, Manuel Page, Deshone Dumas, Lorenzo Ashford Jr., Antwan Bowman Jr.; and one niece, Dominique Thornton.

James Henry was a U.S. Army veteran.  He did his stint in the coal mines of West Virginia at an early age. After moving to Ohio, he was a truck driver for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are one son, James Leftwich Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Gertrude Leftwich of Columbus Ohio; one brother, Curtis (Molly) Leftwich of Beckley; one sister, Shirley Wilson of Columbus, Ohio; three stepdaughters, Caroline Henderson, Jenny Winston, and Mary Ransom, all of Columbus, Ohio; one special granddaughter, Latalia “Cocoa” Harris.

Other survivor include his close companion, Sonia Cline; a special cousin, Ann Toney; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Welcome Baptist Church in East Park. Bishop David F. Allen will officiate.  Friends may call at 12 noon until services begins. American Legion Post 32, Honor Guard will perform military rights at the church.

Archie C. ‘Cornie’ Lively

KINCAID — Archie C. “Cornie” Lively, 76, of Kincaid, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at CAMC - Memorial Division in Charleston, W.Va.

Born November 22, 1936 at Dothan, W.Va., he was the son of the late Snowden and Mary O’Neal Lively.

He was a retired coal miner having worked for US Steel.

Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Elswick Lively; two daughters, Teresa L. D’Angelo and husband, Vince of Oak Hill and Rose Garcia and husband, Paul of Clarksburg; four grandchildren, Byron Pate, Drew D’Angelo, Trevor Pate and Alex D’Angelo and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. David Payne and Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call two hours prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

NARROWS, Va. — Florence Lee McDaniel Robertson, 83, of Narrows, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

Jo Ann Whitman

Mrs. Jo Ann Whitman, 81, of Beckley, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Braley Care Home, Hurricane, W.Va.

She was born on February 19, 1932 in Princeton, W.Va., to Glen and Willie Murphy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Jimmy Murphy, and her husband, Spike Whitman.

Jo Ann is survived by her daughters, Beth and Pam Whitman and one grandson, Joshua Whitman. She is also survived by one sister, Sarah and husband Carl Shaffer; three brothers,  Howard Murphy, Mike and wife Aretta Murphy, and Mason and wife Malita.

Jo Ann was retired from Raleigh County Schools. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beckley.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Beckley.

Jo Ann selflessly donated her body to the WVU Human Gift Registry to support medical education and research.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
