Gary Randall Beaver

OAK HILL — Quoting the hymn, In The Garden, “I‘d stay in the garden with Him tho the night around me be falling, but He bids me go; thro’ the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling. . .”

Gary Randall Beaver, 56, of Oak Hill, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2013 at C.A.M.C. in Charleston.

Born June 22, 1956 in New Mexico, the son of the late Nathan Ray Beaver and Faye Ellen Jacobs Beaver.

Gary was a devoted husband, father, and loved his grandchildren. He loved to fish and hunt. He loved his church too. He was a member of the Harvey United Methodist Church where he served as Deacon.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Sherry Massie.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 34 years Diane Gay (Griffith) Beaver; children Connie Sue Blethen of Oak Hill and Jeannette Lynn Pennington of Oak Hill; siblings Lewis Beaver of Germany, Nathan Beaver of Ohio, Brenda Beaver Sexton and her husband Donald of Oak Hill, David Beaver of North Carolina, Carol Garrett and her husband Edward of Scarbro, Dennis Beaver and his wife of Renee of Indiana, and Jerry Beaver of Scarbro; three grandchildren; special brother-in-law Edward Garrett who was his buddy in fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was an outgoing person who never met a stranger.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Connie Holly and Rev. Carlos Lewis officiating and where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service.

Pallbearers will be Mark Griffith, Elgie Atkins, Dale Atkins, Lee Ward, Owen King, and John Lee Martin.

Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Norma M. Cooper

CORINNE — Norma May Harvey Cooper, 77, of Corinne passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center following a long illness.

Born May 31, 1936 at Stephenson, she was the daughter of the late Marvin G. and Dorothy Marie (Hodge) Harvey.

Norma was a receptionist for Dr. Muscari for 30+ years, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens, and she was a faithful and dedicated wife and mother.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a son, Walter Gordon Bailey; and a daughter, Pamela Sharon McKinney.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving and devoted husband and caregiver of 41 years, Harold Cooper of Corinne; one son, Donald Bailey of Corinne; two sisters, Carol Thompson of Loveland, Ohio and Dorothy Severt of Bolt, W.Va.; four sister-in-laws, Patty Ripley of Grandy, N.C., Henrietta Shrewsbury of Daniels, W.Va., Linda Harper of Pooler, Ga., and Pam Belcher of Mooresville, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be noon, Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Mullens Church of God with Rev. J.L. Riffe officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MULLENS — Tony Randell Cordell Jr., 28, of Mullens, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 in a Charleston hospital, following injuries from a swimming accident at Lake Stephens.

Dewey Thomas ‘Tommy’ Cromer Jr.

Dewey Thomas “Tommy” Cromer Jr., of Beckley, took his Heavenly flight on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on October 26, 1944 at Iroquois, W.Va., he was the son of the late Dewey Thomas Cromer Sr. and Virgie Altizer- Cromer.

Survivors include his wife Donna Atwood- Cromer, sons, Jeffrey Cromer of Coal City, Matthew Cromer and Aaron Cromer of Beckley, his dog Levi, and three cats, Coal, Miss Puskins, Mathers, and friend Tim Davis of Coal City.

Tommy was a disabled coal miner, spending most of his working years at Slab Fork Coal Company, Number 10, Tams, WV. He also worked for Ven Black, and Austin Black in Tams, WV.

Tommy is also survived by four brothers,  Mickey Cromer of Crab Orchard, Ricky Cromer and his wife Gwen of Canada, Danny Cromer and his companion Margaret of Draper, Virginia, and  Alan Cromer and his wife Shirley of Crab Orchard; three sisters, Charlene Miller and her husband Lee of New Mexico, Connie Brown and her husband Herbert of Sophia, and Lou Ann Branham and husband George of Pulaski, Virginia; 31 nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three half sisters, and two half brothers.

Tommy was a  member of the Coal City Freewill Baptist Church. He will be greatly missed by family, church family, and by an abundance of friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to our church family, for their prayers, kind words, and for all that they have done. Also thanks to the ICU/CCU Nurses and Staff, and 4th Floor Nurses and Staff at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, and his doctors.

He loved the nurses and staff, as they loved him, and took exceptional loving care for him.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 1 p.m.  with Pastor Charlie Brown officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Cromer, Matthew Cromer, Thomas Lewis, Elijah Brown, Rudy Hall, Ralph Sutphin.

Stevie E. Daniels

Stevie E. Daniels, 37, of Crab Orchard, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013.

He was born April 21, 1967.

Stevie was iron worker for Powell Construction and previous employee of Taggart for 15 years.

He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Daniels; brother, Robert Daniels; and grandmother, Driscilla Burke.

Stevie is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Christina Daniels of Crab Orchard; their three sons, Andy, Alex, and Adam; mother, Reta Daniels of Florida; and brothers, Jonathan Daniels and David Daniels, both of Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Glen View Independent Baptist Church, on Glen View Road in Crab Orchard.

James Dempsey Dodson

James Dempsey Dodson, age 83 of White Oak, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born on November 8, 1929 at True, he was the son of the late Dorcas Dayton Dodson and Sybil Marie Williams Dodson.

Mr. Dodson was a retired truck driver, and had made his home at White Oak for most of his life.   

He was preceded in death by his wife,  Elizabeth Lucille Dodson, a son James Dempsey Dodson, and brothers, Dorcas, Johnny, Marvin, and Norman Dodson.    

Surviving are his children, Carol Brammer of Cool Ridge, Shirley Martin and her husband Larry of Coal City,  Judy Thompson and fiancé George Wood of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, and Ronnie Dodson of Coal City; brother, Ronald Dodson and his wife Lois of Maryland; two sisters, Evelyn Hatcher of Virginia, and Helen Bennett of Dobson, N.C.; four grandchildren, James  Blevins, Chelsea Thompson, Kristen Hale, and Michaela Martin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday June 7, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Delmas Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Mount View Cemetery at Cool Ridge.  Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MOUNT HOPE — Tony Allen Elswick, 53, of Mount Hope, died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

Born October 5, 1959 at Summersville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Donald and Geraldine Woods Elswick.

He has worked in maintenance and home construction.

Three brothers, William “Willie” Elswick, Calvin D. Elswick, and Joseph Michael Elswick and two sisters, Rebecca Craddock and Kimberly Wilburn preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Evans of Mount Hope and Heather Jones of Mount Hope; one son, Patrick Elswick and wife, Caitline of Beckley; two sisters, Madeline Jackson and husband, Buford of Price Hill, and Tina Suttle and husband, Michael of Harvey; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Burial will be at Elswick Cemetery in Clay County, W.Va.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Harry L. Lusk

BURTON, Mich. — Harry L. Lusk, 80, a native of Herndon, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Gentiva Hospice.

Born Sept. 19, 1932, at Herndon, he was the son of the late Georgia and John Lusk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Avan, Amos, Burless, Harold and Mason; and sisters, Nola, Hester, Leburn and Garnet.

Mr. Lusk was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was active in the Korean War. He attended Faith Tabernacle, and was employed by General Motors-Ternstedt Plant from 1954-1990.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Adams Lusk, whom he married on June 4, 1994; his children, Kevan, Joanne Adams and husband Todd Kraemer; grandchildren, Gatlin, Zachary, Hadley, Landrea, Ben and Josie; brother, Morris Lusk of Itmann, W.Va.; sisters, Melda (Gerald) Bridges of Louisiana, Geva Byrd of California and Ilma Murray of Davison; many special nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Mich., with Pastor Bruce Garner officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, with a military graveside rites under the auspices of VFW Post No. 822 Honor Guard.

Jonluc McCrae

HINTON — Jonluc McCrae, 19, of Hinton,  was called to Heaven on Friday, May 31, 2013.

Born August 3, 1993 in Springfield, Massachusetts. “Luc” was full of life and always trusted everyone. He enjoyed playing ball, swimming, and fishing and when his favorite cousin A.J. Young came home for the summer, the two enjoyed going to the waterslide to watch the girls and see who could get the most “digits” from the girls and come home and count them. Just like their Grandpa, Rudy!

He was the son of Jerri Lee Jarrell of Hinton and Ernie V. McCrae of Springfield, MA.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Charles “Rudy” Gore and Ernest McCrae. Great grandparents, Bob and Dora Gore, a special aunt, Rebecca Gore Manuel and uncle, Dewayne Gore.

Besides his parents, survivors include four sisters, Kornie Jarrell, Toccara, Victoria and Heather McCrae, all of Springfield, MA. Three brothers, Charles McCrae of Springfield, MA, Malcom McCrae of Georgia and “Baby” brother, Justus Jarrell of Hinton. Grandmothers, Elizabeth Gore of Hinton, Brenda Jarrell and Elertha McCrae, both of Springfield, MA. Special aunts and uncles, Ricky & Renee’ Gore, Francine and Robert Smith, Dianne and Ted Johnson and Kevin Gore, all of Hinton. Kim and Able Young of Fayetteville, NC, Chris and Beth Gore, Brian and Jerri Gore of Ft. Wayne, IN, Charles “Chubby” Gore of Ballard, WV, Christopher  and Janell Newborn of Minnesota, Marla and  Renee Jarrell, Gail Parren, Jason, Christopher and Rodney McCrae,all of Springfield, MA and numerous cousins also survive.

Luc will be laid to rest at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday June 7, 2013 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Leo Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Gore Family Cemetery at Talcott. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.

Luc enjoyed hanging out with his two favorite uncles at the farm, Ronald and Brian Gore, working, playing and watching the horses be free. He said, “Auntie, when its my call, take me to the top of the mountain so I can be free and fly away, it’s peaceful there!” The family will hold a memorial meal at the home of Brain Gore in Talcott immediately following the services.

Pallbearers will be, Trey Ford, Cameron Mann, Jessie Howdershelt, Tyler Matsberger, Steven Brunty, Corey Fullen, Jordan Twyman and Joie Meadows, Jr.

Sadly missed, but never forgotten “Luc”…keep smiling, Love Auntie…

Pete Rodes

FAYETTEVILLE — Pete Rodes, 89, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at Pleasant Valley Hospital at Point Pleasant.

Born on March 29, 1924 at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Ira Jay and Lula McClung Rodes.

Pete was a lifelong member of Gatewood Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a WWII Navy Veteran.  Pete and his late wife, Joann, owned and operated grocery stores in Fayette County. He belonged to Gideons International.       

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Jones Rodes on January 27, 1996; and brothers, Martin Rodes, Earl Rodes, and Bill Rodes.

Left to cherish his memory include his sons, Larry (Liz) Rodes and Jim (Leslie) Rodes, all of Huntington; daughters, Mary (Gary) Higgs of Harrisonburg, Va. and Jeanne (Wayne) Sayre of Point Pleasant; grandchildren, Megan (Brett) Doeffinger, Nathan Sayre, Johanna (Adam) Stiltner, David Rodes, and Christina Rodes; great-granddaughter, Gwen Stiltner; and sisters, Madora Ballard of Hershey, Pa. and Jo Ella Etchison of Galion, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 7, 2013 at Gatewood Baptist Church with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow with military honors by American Legion Post 149 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

WRISTON — Jerry Walter Skaggs, 69, of Wriston, died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born November 29, 1943 at Ansted, W.Va., he was the son of the late Delbert and Garnet Robertson Skaggs.

He was a brick and stone mason.

Mr. Skaggs was a member of the Loop Creek Baptist Church, Wriston.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Tara Lynn Skaggs

Survivors include his wife, Margie Ann Holcomb Skaggs; one son, Roger Skaggs of Wriston; a grandson, Jeremy Skaggs of Minden; one brother, Gary Keith Skaggs of Wriston; and three sisters, Margie Gwinn and husband, Mack of Belle, Dorothy Jones of Wriston and Patricia Kennan of Shrewsbury. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with the Rev. Ronnie Persinger officiating. Burial will be at Robertson Cemetery on Taylor’s Branch Road, Wriston.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

John Henry Stinson Sr.

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — John Henry Stinson Sr., 84, of Little River, formerly of Beckley, was called to Heaven, Wednesday, June 5, 2013. He was surrounded by family at his home.

John was born on October 1, 1928 in Jewell Ridge, Va., to the late Stella Honaker and Roby Lee Stinson.

He attended Beckley College, Appalachian Bible Institute, Moody Bible College, Perdue University and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in December, 1947.  John was married to Carol Stinson on January 31, 1948 and they lived in Beckley, before relocating to Little River. He was employed with and retired from MetLife and later served as Vice President of Atlas Drywall with his son, John Jr. John was an active member and honorary deacon at First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. He had a passion for motorcycle riding and a great devotion to his family.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carol Stinson; son, John Stinson Jr. (Darlene) of Little River; grandchildren, Kristen Greene, Whitney DelConte (Ryan), John Ryan Stinson and Brent Long; great grandchildren, Carson Greene and Raelyn DelConte; sisters, Marie McNeely, Elva Gay Hubbard, Shirley Honaker, Betty Hall, Wanda Yates; and brothers, Glen Suite and Daryl Ferguson.

He is predeceased by his daughter, Sherry Stinson and five brothers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 6 at Lee Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach. Burial will follow at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens.
