Carlos M. Alderman

FAIRLEA — Carlos M. Alderman, 87, of Fairlea, died Thursday, April 24, 2014.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Joe Hutchinson officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Betty Jo Cook Bailey

CRANY — Betty Jo Cook Bailey, 64, of Crany, went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

She was born September 19, 1949, in Kopperston, W.Va., a daughter of the late Dewey and Virginia Billings Cook.

She was an active member of the Lillyhaven Baptist Church, where she served the Lord and loved her church family.

She is preceded in death by her parents Dewey and Virginia Billings Cook.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 37 years Avary Bailey; a daughter Leslie and her husband Rev. Scott Kennedy of Glen Daniel; son Jason Bailey and his wife Roncheski of Crany; two granddaughters Ella and Olivia Bailey both of Crany, whom she loved and adored very much; two brothers Rev. Algie R. Cook and his wife Peggy of Crany and Dennis Larry Cook Sr. and his wife Brenda of Crany. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, as well as several aunts and uncles and many other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Lillyhaven Baptist Church, Lynco, W.Va., with Rev. Valdis Bailey, Rev. Johnny Jones, and Rev. William Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her mother and father in the Kopperston Community Cemetery, Kopperston.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the church.

Pallbearers will be her nephews JoBuck Cook, Naman Cook, William Cook, Larry Cook Jr., Francis Bailey, Nathan Short, AJ Cook, Larry Joseph Cook, and Travis Cook.

Jackie C. Bailey

MATHENY — Jackie C. Bailey, 53, departed this life Thursday, April 24, 2014.

Born July 23, 1960, in Pineville, he was the son of the late James M. Bailey and Garnet Bailey.

Jackie enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding four-wheelers, and motorcycles. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family whom he dearly loved. He will be missed; he always brought a smile to your face.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother, David Bailey.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Garnet Bailey of Matheny; a son, Jackie W. Bailey II, and his companion, Dana Lester; a daughter, Tabitha Lee Cline and husband, Brian, all of Matheny; a brother, Terry Bailey of Matheny; a sister, Regina Toler and husband, Randy, of Kopperston; ex-wife, Clarice Miller; a grandson, Brian Adam Keith Cline; three nieces, Brandi Mullins, Autumn Jordan and Makayla Bailey; a nephew, J.C. Bailey; special aunt, Louise Stewart; and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Jackie’s life will be 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Herman Cook, Rev. Sherry Kernick and Tim Kennedy officiating. Jackie will be laid to rest in Stewart Cemetery, Matheny, W.Va.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends from noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

EDMOND — Martha J. Carver, 93, of Edmond, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Ansted Center of Ansted.

Curtis M. Farley

BASTROP, Texas — Curtis M. Farley of Bastrop, Texas, passed away April 11, 2014, at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center following a long illness. 

He was born November 21, 1955, in Hinton, West Virginia, to Jason and Ruby Farley.

Most of his childhood, he lived in Cool Ridge, W.Va., and was a graduate of Shady Spring High School. The majority of his adult life, he resided in Texas.

His life’s passion was music. He produced and engineered music at his home studio as well as performed with multiple groups through the years. He was a strong supporter of independent musicians.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Those who survive are his son, Jason Farley, of Bastrop, Texas; brother, Ray Farley (Vicki) of Wooster, Ohio; sisters, Teresa Jones (David) of Cool Ridge, W.Va., and Kimberly Field (Jim) of Hendersonville, N.C.; stepdaughter, Bianca Arvin of Los Angeles, Calif., and ex-wife, Celia Zavala of Bastrop, Texas. 

A Memorial Service was held April 17, 2014, in Bastrop, Texas. His cremated remains will be interred at the Birchfield Cemetery at Flat Top, W.Va.

Catherine K. Mack

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Catherine K. Mack, formerly of Beckley and Kopperston, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot, Vesper Knoll in Hinton.

Ethel June Miller

Ethel June Miller, 87, of Beckley, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, April 25, 2014, at the Bowers Hospice House.

Born on the 14th day of February in 1927 in East Gulf, W.Va., a daughter to the late Clifton Bud Lovell Sr. and Laura Ethel Graham Lovell.

Ethel was a homemaker and was a graduate of Sophia High School Class of 1948. She enjoyed cooking for her family, photography, and going to church. She attended the Grace Chapel Community Church on Dry Hill Road in Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James French Miller; son, James French Miller Jr.; and a brother, Clifton Bud “Buddy” Lovell Jr.

Those left behind to carry on her legacy include her children, James Darrel Miller and wife Sheila of Prince George, Va., Linda Jean Goins and husband Arlie “Barney” Goins of Beckley, Dwayne Lacy and wife Lois Kathleen of Beckley, Brenda Critzer and husband Shawn of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Kathy Sanders and husband Joe of Oceana, W.Va.; brothers, Phillip Thomas Lovell and wife Patricia of Sophia and Jackie Ray Lovell of Beckley; sister, Jeanne Dressel of Port Charlotte, Fla.; grandchildren, Katelyn Sanders, James David Miller, Daniel Scott Miller, Angel DeSouza, Lori Cooper; great-grandchildren, Alexis Miller, Michael and Travis Cooper; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lovell of Sophia; and a host of friends.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with, at Ethel’s request, her son Dwayne Lacy officiating. Also officiating will be Pastor Jeff Perdue, Pastor Kenny Woolwine, and Pastor Randy Mann. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Elizabeth Ann ‘Scotty’ Scott

Liz began her eternal life on Friday, April 25, 2014, after a long and terrible battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83 years old. She began her earthly life on February 2, 1931, at Stanaford, W.Va., as the daughter of the late Robert and Annie McCartney Scott. She was the last remaining sibling and the baby of the family.

She was preceded in death by brothers: James, John, William, Robert, Thomas and Jerry Scott. Her sisters that preceded her were Agnes Fox and Margaret Scott with whom she lived. She also was preceded by her sister-in-law, Catherine Scott, who lived with her for 45 years, and her nephew, Robert Lee Scott.

Elizabeth graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1948. She started work on her eighteenth birthday at Appalachian Power Company as a secretary in Stores, where she was known as Scotty. She always told everyone she loved working with all men. She retired after 45 years of service.

She was active in retirement. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for over 30 years. She was active in Well I Bee and Senior Friends.

Liz was a member of Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church, where she loved being a member of the choir and the Men’s and Ladies’ Bible Class. She truly loved her church family.

She is survived by nieces: Peggy Lawhun, Betty Weaver, Mary Ann Scott, Barbara Crump, Catherine Anne Scott and nephews: John, Tom, Robert, Mark and Stuart Scott. Great-nieces and nephews: Lori and Heather, who helped with her care, Thomas, Rob, Allison, J.R., Bobby and Katie. Great-Great-nieces and nephews: Hadley, Cooper, Aiden, Addison, Jared, Brianna, Peyton and Parker, Liana and Alex. She also had many wonderful friends.

The family would like to thank Johnette Walker, the staff at Greystone and Hospice for their help with her care.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014, at Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor George Wood officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, April 27, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Calfee Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
