Benny Joe Cassady

IAEGER — Benny Joe Cassady, age 69, loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather, departed this life on Thursday, August 1st, at his home in Iaeger, surrounded by his family following a long battle with cancer.

Benny was born on November 1, 1943, in Panther, W.Va. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cassady.

Benny began working in his father’s business at a very young age. He was a self-employed business man from 1977 until his retirement in 2003. He loved his garage and spent all his time there. He was a genius mechanic. Benny was a past McDowell County Board of Education member and President. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and of the Baptist faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Linda, with whom he celebrated 47 years of marriage on January 17th. Loving daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Cassady Birch and her husband, Mike, and Michelle (Micki) Cassady Mollohan and her husband, Jeff. Precious grandchildren, Breanna Lea Cecil, age 14, Reghan Michelle Mollohan, age 11, and Connor Joe Mollohan, age 8, all of Beckley. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law John Randy and Brenda Lee Garland. Nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Lee Garland and their son, Elijah, all of Big Sandy, W.Va.

Other survivors include Drema Bernice Cassady, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Swartz, and Mr. and Mrs. Gail Webb.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice Compassus of Princeton, W.Va., Dr. Dave and his staff, and the Beckley VA.

Honoring Benny’s wishes, he was cremated and there will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Benny’s life will be held at a later date.

Albert Henry Cole

GOLDEN, Colo. — Albert Henry Cole, 84, of Golden, CO, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife Ann; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Michael Hutchison, and his much loved grandson, Alex Hutchison and his wife, Lynn, and three beautiful great-grandsons, Tyler, Brayden and Carter. Albert has one surviving brother, Ralph Cole and his wife Myra. Other surviving family members are Jeanette and William Phillips, Teddy Ford, Danny Ford, and many other nieces and nephews.

Preceding Albert in death are four sisters and five brothers.

Albert was a talented artist and craftsman whose talents will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at Shady Spring First Baptist Church, on Saturday, Aug. 17th, at 1 p.m.

John D. Daniels

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — John D. Daniels, 66, of Auburndale, FL, died Thursday, August 8, 2013, in Rittman, Ohio.

He was born August 20, 1946, in Hazy, WV, to Pat H. and Laura A. (Tolliver) Daniel and formerly lived in Wadsworth and Lodi. He graduated from Marsh Fork High School in 1964.

John was a machine and crane operator at the G.M. Plant in Parma for 31 years until retiring in 1998. He was a member of UAW Local 1005; Medina Masonic Lodge; American Legion in Winter Haven, FL, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and enjoyed golfing, football and baseball.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1964 to 1967.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Daniels; children, William J. Daniels of Wadsworth, and his former wife, Kim Daniels of Wadsworth, Lisa G. (Charlie) Crouch of Rittman, and John D. (Tracy) Daniels, Jr., of Medina, and grandchildren, Brandon, Shelby, Morgan, Keegan and Megan Daniels, and Connor Crouch; brothers, Pat (Terry) Daniel of Taylorsville, NC, and Mickey (Elva) Daniel of Edwight, WV; a sister, Sheila (Steve) Cantley of Dry Creek, WV; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Armstrong Funeral Home, 734 Boone St., Whitesville, WV 25209, on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Minturn officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV.

Robert Clayton Davis (Joe)

Robert Clayton Davis (Joe), age 93, passed away Aug. 9, 2013, at Heartland in Beckley after a short illness. He was born Nov. 25, 1919, at Lawn, W.Va. He was the son of the late Henry and Victoria Davis.

Mr. Davis served in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart among other medals. He was of the Baptist faith.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Dora Vandall, Roxie Campbell, Myrtle Wooldridge, and Fannie Bryant, and 3 brothers, Sammy, Alfred, and Ray Davis.

Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 50 years, Reba Davis, 3 daughters, Barbara Davis and Beverly Davis of Lawn and Betty Halsey and husband Donnie of Meadow Bridge, 2 sons, Billy Davis of Lawn and Bobby Davis and wife Caroline of Rainelle. One sister, Ida Cox of Rainelle, and a brother, Thomas Davis of Lawn. Also surviving are several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Roger Thornton officiating. Burial will follow at the McElhenney Cemetery at Grassy Meadows. Friends may call from 12 to 1 at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

Pauline Dunbar, 83, of Beckley passed away at her daughters home August 9, 2013.

She was born October 12, 1929, a daughter of the late Clyde Burgess and Mary Williams Burgess.

Pauline was a homemaker and Christian.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Harlow Dunbar, a granddaughter Mary Pearl Scarbrough, two daughters-in-law, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Dunbar of Lanark, WV, and Jeffery Dunbar and his wife Jean of Novelty, MO; four daughters, Nina Dunbar and Marshall Blackenbeckler of Maynor, WV, Lesa Dunbar of Stanaford, WV, Tina Dunbar-Lilly and husband Van Lilly of Clear Creek, WV, and Belinda and husband Denver Scarbrough of Artie, WV, grandchildren Terry Lee and Eric Dunbar, Paula Tyree, Mike and Kathy Thompson, Allie Dunbar, Derick and Blake Dunbar, Megan and Destany Scarbrough, nine great-grandchildren, two brothers Edwin and Annie Burgess of Sparks, NV, Wayne and Sue Burgess of NY, and a  sister Venice Burgess of Artie, WV. Two very special friends Bob Humphries and Juanita Dunbar.

The family would also like to thank Hospice of WV for the love and care they provided to our mom.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Workman’s Creek Church in Workman’s Creek, WV, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial to follow at the Dunbar Cemetery.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday.

Pastor John Ed Lilly, 67, of Cool Ridge passed away at home after a short illness. He went to his heavenly home on Thursday, August 8, 2013.

Born November 26, 1945, he was the son of the late Robert Lilly and Helen Hatcher Lilly of Cool Ridge.

John was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Earlyn Lilly, and sister, Jean Ann Lilly.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen Mae Phillips Lilly; two daughters, Jennifer E. Lilly-Muktar, husband AbdelBagi, of Beckley, and Janel Ellen Lilly, of Cool Ridge. John was the proud grandfather of Muktar, Haju, and Ryan Muktar of Beckley. His sister, Thelma Lilly Okes, husband Tom, of Cool Ridge.

John Ed was a coal miner for approximately 10 years in various mines of southern WV. He then became a school bus driver for another 10 years with the Raleigh County Board of Education.

John’s passion was in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. His goal was for all who heard him to come to know his Lord. John was the pastor at Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Odd, WV, for 20 years. He was currently the pastor at Clifftop Missionary Baptist Church, Beaver, WV, for the last 6 years. His love for his congregation was a prime example of serving the Lord.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2013, at Clifftop Baptist Church in Beaver with Mr. Warren Shrewsbury officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday Evening at the church. Burial will follow at the Earlyn Phillips Family Cemetery on Blue Jay Six Road in Cool Ridge. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

William G. Lucas

On August 4th, 2013, God  gave William G. Lucas a new body after a long battle with cancer and other debilitating diseases. He was born to Hubert L. Lucas (b. 1906  – d. 1938) and  Brooke Hughes Lucas (b. 1909 – d. 2008) on December 20, 1937. He was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Holland, MI, attendee of LifeQuest in Holland, MI, Cross Roads Church in Bay Village, OH. He began his life as a member of Coal Marsh Missionary Baptist Church in WV, the oldest church in Raleigh County.

He was a lifelong member of the Ohio Society of CPAs, an Accounting and Tax instructor of two colleges. William had the honor of working for both Otis Elevator and Crucible Steel in Cleveland, OH, and was owner and operator of Western Foundry in Holland, MI, for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley A Lucas; his daughter, Gwendelyn and  Dwight Williams, and grandchildren Brooke, Jordan, Garrett, and Krista of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; his son, Kevin and Dee Lucas, and grandchildren Christopher and Dellaney of Romulus, NY; and his son, Brian and Maggie Lucas, and grandchildren Dierdre and Jacob of Garfield Heights, OH. He is also survived by his siblings: Bob and Mary Lucas of Brunswick, OH; Mary Ellen Dalton of Anderson, SC; Dennis and Cindy Lucas of Quinton, VA, and Ruth and Carl Gehrman of Lakewood, OH. He left behind many friends and favorite cousins, too numerous to mention.

Entombment will take place in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Relatives and friends may meet the family on Monday, August 12, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Park.

Michael Don Richmond, 45, of Coal City, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, as a result of an automobile accident.

Rev. Joseph W. Roebuck Sr.

Rev. Joseph Wilson Roebuck Sr. left this earth for his heavenly home, Wednesday, on August 7th, 2013.

Joe was the son of Benjamin and Anna Elizabeth Garrison Roebuck, both deceased.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, George Rollins (Rolly) Roebuck, his sister, Betty Jean Bennett and husband, Russell Bennett, a nephew, William S. Bennett, and a very special grandson, Joseph Randall McQuillen.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Susan Allen Roebuck; his son, Joseph Wilson Roebuck Jr. and wife, Amanda, his daughter, Heather Roebuck Bowyer; his brother, William B. Roebuck and wife Judy; eight wonderful grandchildren, Elizabeth Roebuck, Shaun Miller, Kristin Miller, Timothy Roebuck, Mary Roebuck, Benjamin Roebuck, Joseph Wilson (Trey) Roebuck III and Rebekah Roebuck.

After a 35-year career in the retail business, Joe went on to study and eventually became an ordained minister. As such, he pastored the Gatewood Baptist Church and the Mount Hope Baptist Temple.

He also was an avid golfer in his spare time.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 11th, 1 p.m. at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Sisson, Dr. Phillip Smith and Rev. Robert Keaton officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to the funeral hour. Joe will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be Peter Graham, Ray Dickerson, Arthur Sanda Jr., Jeff Wiseman, Dwayne Hicks and Mike Summer.

HINTON — Penny V. Romanello, 45, of Hinton, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013.

Charles H. Spencer

SEWICKLEY, Pa. — Charles H. Spencer, 84, of Sewickley, formerly of Rainelle, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, after a long, brave struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born March 28, 1929, in Rainelle, son of the late H. Kenneth and Ferris (Rose) Spencer.

He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Mary Virginia (Jackson) Spencer; loving father of Sally (Malcolm) Nimick of Sewickley and devoted Paw-Paw to Virginia Nimick of New York, NY, C. Spencer Nimick of Dallas, Texas, and Malcolm Charles Nimick of Sewickley.

He was predeceased by his siblings Margaret (George) Yeargo, Marion (Ray) Bowles, and Hugh Kenneth (“Babe”) Spencer Jr.

Charlie spent his career with CSX (C&O Railroad). His first job with the railroad was polishing engines with graphite in the car shop in Rainelle. He then served as a railroad apprentice electrician in Gary, Indiana, and finished his career in Baltimore, Md., as system-wide Manager of Compliance and Safety Administration. During his time at CSX, he participated in construction of the then-secret, cold war bunker built to house Congress, under The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Charlie was a member of Masonic Lodge 166 in Clifton Forge, Va., and earned his 32nd degree Scottish Rite in Baltimore. He was an avid collector of clocks and an amateur horologist. He belonged to the Valley Baptist Church in Lutherville, Md., the Senior Men’s Club of Sewickley, and the Hon. Order of Kentucky Colonels.

A memorial service will be held at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, Chapel of the Resurrection, on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. Please use the Grant Street entrance. Private interment will take place in his beloved West Virginia.

Ann Emyl Tocado

MORGANTOWN — Ann Emyl Tocado, 71, of Morgantown, passed away Monday, August 5, 2013, at Sundale Nursing Home of Morgantown.

She was born in Beckley, WV, on November 29, 1941, the daughter of the late Jack Asher Nuckols and Mary (Stanley) Nuckols.

Ann spent most of her life in Beckley. She was an avid reader and spent hours giving her time to hospitals and other charities. She was a very special mom and grandmother, and she was truly loved.

Ann is survived by her sons, John Tocado and wife Susan of Bethlehem, PA, and Richard Tocado and wife Stephenie of Waxhaw, NC; grandsons Derek, Gunner and Jackson Tocado; stepgrandsons Tyler and Aaron Pilkington.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death 37 years ago by her husband Douglas Tocado.

Cremation services were provided by Hastings Funeral Home.

A private family graveside memorial will be held at the Pineville Cemetery in Pineville, Kentucky.
