HINTON — Sandra Kay Adkins, 55, of Hinton, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

GROVE CITY, Ohio — Esculene Baisden, 73, of Grove City, formerly of Lenore, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Violet Nellie Miller Ballard

WHITESVILLE — Violet Nellie Miller Ballard, 81, of Jarrold’s Valley section of Whitesville, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.

She was born April 30, 1932, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Absent and Parthenia Toler Miller.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jean Ballard; a daughter, Carolyn Gray; a sister, Katherine Nelson; and a grandson, Patrick McCormick.

She was a member of the Sycamore Free Pentecostal Church, Sycamore.

Those left to cherish her memory include her finance, Billy Butler of Sycamore; a daughter, Margaret McCormick and husband, Shelton, of Parkersburg, WV; sons, Clarence Ballard and wife, Yvonne, of Dallas, GA, Thomas I Ballard of Whitesville, WV, Randy Ballard of Atlanta, GA, Larry Ballard and wife, Denise, of Oak Hill, WV, Gary Ballard and wife, Patty, of Albertville, AL; nineteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; she will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at the Sycamore Free Pentecostal Church at Sycamore, with Pastor Jerry Tyree and Rev. Cecil McClellan officiating. Singers will be Shirley Estep and Duke Stewart.

Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery at Orgas.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Genevieve ‘Dee’ Blevins

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — Genevieve Delores “Dee” Blevins, 85, of Middleburg, passed away Friday, August 2, 2013, at home after having two strokes in December 2012.

She was born in Pocahontas, Va., as the oldest child of the late George and Hazel Smith Larue.

She was a charter member of the Glen Fork Baptist Temple and a member of the First Baptist Church of Middleburg, Florida, since moving to Florida 28 years ago. She was a member of the Quilting Group at her church and went on many trips with the Senior Adult Group at church.

Genevieve graduated from Gary High School and Concord College and was employed for 35 years as a teacher with Wyoming County Schools having spent most of those years at Glen Fork Elementary School. Because of the need for teachers during World War II, she began her teaching career immediately after graduating from high school and one summer at Concord and taught that first year near Pineville in a one-room school that contained all 12 grades. She had wanted to be a school teacher since she was six years old.

After moving to Florida she worked at the Clay County Public Library for 10 years. She was an avid reader and had a great love for books.

She was a wonderful cook, housekeeper, meticulous organizer and record keeper having maintained a daily journal for many years.

She was married in 1946 to the late Lester Blevins of Glen Fork for 57 years. Together they traveled the world having visited such places as China, Hong Kong, England, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many states and places in America. She had been on 18 cruises since moving to Florida and during her illness was planning another cruise to take with her family and siblings. She was blessed with an active and healthy life and desire for learning her entire 85 years.

Genevieve loved her family and is survived by her daughter, Karen Brooks of Cool Ridge, and her son, Phillip Duane Blevins and wife, Mary, of Middleburg; granddaughter Heather Brooks of Cool Ridge, grandson Jason Brooks and wife Christi and their children, J.T. and Jenna of Crawley; granddaughter Kendra Blevins and her children Beth and Tiffany of Connelly Springs, NC; and stepgrandchildren, Malena Murphy of Jacksonville, Fla., and Daniel Murphy of Houston, Texas. Siblings surviving are Kathleen McGraw of Leckie, Joy Farley of Coal City, Ronnie Larue and wife Juanell of Jacksonville, Fla., Larry Larue of King, NC, and Barbara McKenzie of Flat Rock, Mich. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law David and Sue Blevins, Oakley and Mary Helen Blevins, Edith Bartell, Irene Blevins, Elsie Hurley, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her grandson, Ryan Blevins, and her son-in-law, Tom Brooks.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Middleburg, Fla., and conducted by Pastor Tim Martin.

Harold W. Colbird Sr.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Harold Whitfield Colbird Sr., 81, of Columbus, formerly of Bud Mtn., passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at his residence following a long illness.

Born January 28, 1932, at Mullens, he was the son of the late James Lundy Colbird and Matilda Mae Colbird.

Mr. Colbird was a retired employee of the N&W Railroad and was also a former Ohio State Policeman. He was also a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his wife, Deloris Colbird; four brothers, William Colbird and his deceased wife, Marie, Raymond Colbird and his deceased wife, Frances, Eugene Colbird and his deceased wife, Geneva, and Claude James Colbird Jr.; four sisters, Edna Colbird Ray and her deceased husband, Claude, Rosemary Colbird Moran and her deceased husband, Don, Ilene Princess Combs and her deceased husband, Oscar, and Pearl Wiles and her deceased husband, Estel.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Harold W. Colbird Jr. and his wife, Kathey, of Columbus, OH; four daughters, Theresa Goode and her husband, James, of Pataskla, OH, Sheri Cline of Mayland, Barbara Colbird of Columbus, OH, and Tammy Carpenter and her husband, Charles, of Columbus, OH; two brothers, Joseph Leonard Colbird and his wife, Corlis, of Alpoca and Roger Lee Colbird and his wife, Belinda, of Bud Mtn.; a sister-in-law, Audie Colbird of North Carolina; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Nathan Lane officiating. Burial will follow in the Bell-Colbird Cemetery, Bud Mtn.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Davenport, Preston Goode, Josh Miller, Steven Colbird, Charlie Carpenter, Randy Colbird, and Melvin “Boo” Colbird.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Council.

VICTOR — Susan Jean Harper, 59, of Victor, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

MINDEN — Roger Dale Jeffries, 65, of Minden, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013.

Lawrence Elmer Jennings

CANA, Va. — Lawrence Elmer Jennings, age 65, of Cana, Va., formerly of Odd, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at his home.

Born on June 15, 1948, at Odd, he was the son of the late Samuel Jennings and Vivian Marie Hall Jennings.

Mr. Jennings was a retired mechanic, and was a resident of Virginia for the past year, having previously resided in Athens, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Ray Jennings.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Friend Jennings; four children, Mary Jennings of Lexington, NC; Tammy Jennings of Princeton, WV; Jesse Jennings and wife Brenda of Lexington, NC; Stacy Wagner and husband Isaac of Winston-Salem, NC; nine grandchildren; a brother, Larry Jennings of Lewisburg, WV; two sisters, Josie Harding of Lexington, NC, and Gail Wells of Lexington, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Prunest officiating. Burial will follow at the Jennings Cemetery at Odd.

SANDSTONE — Alva Leonard “Al” McMillion, 96, of Sandstone, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

George Allen Mullins

George Allen Mullins, 68, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

He was born December 22, 1944, the eldest child of the late George K. and Dorothy Mae Mullins. He is also preceded in death by two brothers.

He was a graduate of Ansted High School and a proud Army Veteran, serving from 1962 to 1965. He worked many years and retired from financial planning and insurance sales. He held strong to his faith at the Lesslie Church of Christ in S.C.

He is survived by his wife, Christine, of 48 years and his Children: Allen and his wife Tammy, Gene and his wife Becky, Jonathan and his wife Nivein, all of S.C., Jason and his fiancée Angela of Ohio and Chad and his wife Jessica of Kentucky. He was the proud grandparent of 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also he is survived by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday evening at the chapel from 6 until 8 p.m.

Edward Brian ‘Butch’ Rose

Edward Brian “Butch” Rose, 54, of Beckley, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born May 7, 1959, in Bluefield, W.Va., to Gloria Phyllis (Lafferty) McNeely of Beckley and the late Gilbert Edward Rose.

Butch was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was loved by his family and he especially had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marsha Annette Rose.

Along with his mother, those surviving include his loving wife of 35 years, Mrs. Patricia “Patty” Rose, at home; son, Justin Rose and wife Michelle of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter, Melissa Watson and husband Jeffery of Sophia; and his beloved grandchildren, Bradley, Hailey, Kaylin, Abel, Jayden, Riley, and Wyatt.

In keeping with Butch’s final wishes, he was cremated.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, at the Sprague Freewill Baptist Church, 810 Ewart Ave., Beckley, with Pastor Fred Lovell officiating.

Friends may gather at the church on Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of service.
