Frankie Dale Collins

BRENTON — Frankie Dale Collins, 43, of Brenton passed away Friday, Nov. 29, 2013.

Calfee Funeral and Cremation Service of Pineville is serving the Collins family.



Edith Mae Barker Lively Collison

Edith Mae Barker Lively Collison, age 83, of Beaver, WV, passed away in her home Wednesday, November 27, 2013.

Born on July 7, 1930, she was the daughter to the late Harry Ross and Virgie Mae Lilly Barker.

Edith retired from the Bank of Raleigh (City National Bank) after 38 years as Assistant Vice President of the Bookkeeping Department. She was an active member of the United Methodist Temple and most recently attended Grace Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, reading, traveling and visiting with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, William (Bill) Hatfield Lively, and three brothers: Dr. Harry Ross “Ray” Barker, Jr., James Clyde Barker and Edwin Lee Barker.

She is survived by husband, Sidney Burton Collison; one son, William “Ed” Lively; two daughters, Harriet Harry and Linda Murdock; three stepchildren: Terry Collison, Rusty Collison and Cindy Bartosh.

Edith is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kanawha Street location of Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home.

Services, conducted by Reverend Randy Atkins, will be held Monday, December 2, at 1 p.m. also at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home. Burial will follow immediately at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be: Matthew Lively; Michael Chaney; Mark Lively; Walter Fox; Steve Murdock and Anthony Banton.

Richard Wayne Heath

Richard Wayne Heath, age 61, of Sophia, West Virginia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 27, 2013.

Born on December 16, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of Dolly Farley Heath and Billy Heath of Midway.

Mr. Heath was a disabled building construction employee, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3226 at Midway-Sophia.

Mr. Heath attended the Oak Grove Christian Church, and was a member of the Brothers of the Wheel, Highlands Chapter.

In his spare time he enjoyed motorcycle riding.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene Vandall Murry Heath; His children, R.J. Heath and his wife Angie of Sophia, a daughter Alyson Nicholas of Romney, WV. Stepdaughter, Amber Murry of Sophia, Stacey Murry, of Beckley, and Tashawna Vandall of Beckley. Three granddaughters, a grandson, six stepgrandsons, and three stepgranddaughters. Three brothers, Johnny Dwayne Heath of Midway, Kyle Heath and his wife Sharon of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Billy Heath Jr. of Midway. A sister, Patricia Strader and her husband Rennis of Midway.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Barry Clyburn officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Heath Jr., Luke Heath, Billy Heath Jr., Oscar Hughes, David Caldwell, and Timmy Asbury. Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle and Johnny Heath.

Rev. Garlen H. Howington

Rev. Garlen H. Howington, 84, of Beaver, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord November 28, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House. He resided at the Villages of Greystone in Beaver.

He was born in Burdine, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Guard and Bertha Cooper Howington.

He graduated from high school from Jenkins, Kentucky, and then went on to serve in the Army during the Korean War where he served as a chaplain. After completing his duty in the service he graduated  from Appalachian Bible Institute; he also graduated from Concord College and also attended Morris Harvey. He was a member of the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department, he was on the staff of Appalachian Bible Institute, and served as chaplain at the Pinecrest Sanitarium and the Salina Police Department in Salina, Kansas, for 40 years.

He pastored three churches in his 51 years of ministry, Grace Gospel Church in Beaver, Salina Bible Church, and Fellowship Baptist Church both in Salina, Kansas.

He married his college sweetheart Dorothy J. Berry in August 1956; to that union they were blessed with three children.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by beloved wife of 52 years Dorothy J. Howington who passed in July of 2008; also preceding him are his brother Roy Cooper and his sisters Eula Short, Kathleen Webb, Evelyn Dameron, and Mary Cantrell. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Those left to carry on his legacy of ministry include his children: Sarah Adkins and her husband Rev. Doc of Beckley, Rev. J. Scott Howington and his wife Charlene of Wheaton, Illinois, and Suszanne Bowles and her husband Clarence of Lanark. He was blessed with five grandchildren: Amy L. Deborde and her husband Dave, Allison L. Adkins, Bethany Engelkeimer and her husband John, Jessica Adams and her husband Jason, and David Howington, and also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren.

Services celebrating the life and ministry of Rev. Howington will be held Monday, December 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Beaver with his pastor Rev. Steve Gibson officiating. Following the service he will be laid to rest with full military honors at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Roy Damron, Paige Ward, Mark Anderson, Steve Mooney, C.D. Hunt, and Greg Chapman.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the Villages of Greystone, for helping Garlen feel like Greystone was his home, his special care givers, Raleigh General SICU staff, and Dr. Paul Oar, for his guidance. The family offers a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Bowers Hospice House, who cared not only for our Dad, but for us as well.

Elizabeth Christeen Jennings

Elizabeth Christeen Jennings, 84, of Beckley, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2013. Born February 26, 1929, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Henry Wyman and Lola Hutchens Boblett.

Elizabeth was a retired Raleigh County School Teacher having taught at Institute Elementary for many years. She was a member of the Orchard Valley Women’s Club Degree of Honor, Senior Friends at Raleigh General Hospital and the Oak Grove Christian Church. Elizabeth loved spending time sewing, gardening and working in her flower garden.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lowery Buford Jennings; sisters, Ruby Huffman and Mary Cathleen Scarafino; and brothers, Thomas, Willie (Ronce), Kenneth, James and Robert Boblett.

Survivors include her sister, Vera Snyder; brother, Muriel (Pete) Boblett; daughter, Frances Ilene Lavinder and her husband Forrest; sons, Lowery Wayne Jennings and his wife Judy, Ronald Howard Jennings and his wife Mary and Dennis Warren Jennings and his wife Kyoko; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home with Pastor Kelly Gowan officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, December 2, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Calfee Cemetery in Mt. Tabor.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

LOGAN — Kimberly Lanthorne, 51, of Logan died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013.

Annis ‘JoAnn’ Lilly

Annis “JoAnn” Lilly, 83, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 27, 2013.

JoAnn was born October 24, 1930, at Artie, WV, to the late Jiles and Lula Stover Williams.

She loved going to church and was a member of the Workman’s Creek Methodist Church, socializing with her friends, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Lilly; two sons, Everett Lilly, Jr., and Jiles Lilly; and a stepson, Tennis Lilly.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Dianne Tomah and husband, Dennis, of Princeton, Maine; daughter, Laverne Wheeler and husband, Brian, of Beaver; daughter, Karen Lilly of Beckley; son, Mark Lilly and wife, Donna, of Midway; son, Daniel Lilly and wife, Sandy, of Beckley; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; stepson, Everett Allen Lilly and wife, Karen, of Beckley; stepdaughter, Ann Stetler of Beckley; a brother, Olan Williams; 3 sisters, Reba Harris, Maxi Pettrey, and Sarah Taylor; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Services to celebrate the life of JoAnn Lilly will be held 2 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Sam Williams, Rev. Hank Williams, and Rev. Sandra Taylor officiating. Following the services JoAnn will be laid to rest at the Workman’s Creek Cemetery, Workman’s Creek.

Jayden Lee Mullins

Jayden Lee Mullins, 2 weeks, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013, in the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born November 14, 2013, in the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley, he was the son of Emma Bumgarner and Rodney Mullins.

Other family are his big sister, Alexis Mullins of Danese; grandparents Robert Bumgarner of Danese, Debbie Bumgarner of Meadow Bridge, and Beverly and Tim Ballenger of Danese; and his aunt Tijah Bumgarner and uncle Dan Carlisle of Charleston, aunt Tanya Ballenger and aunt Chassity Ballenger, both of Danese, and lots of extended family and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, December 2, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Ronnie Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Patton Memorial Cemetery at Meadow Bridge.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anthony G. ‘Tony’ Passerby

Anthony G. “Tony” Passerby, 75, of Beckley died on November 29, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, ending his 7-month battle with cancer.

Tony was born in Lachine, Quebec, Canada. His career as a professional golfer brought him and his family to West Virginia. He began working as a caddy at the age of 8 and turned pro at the age of 18. He met his wife, Irene, when she began taking golf lessons from him. Tony worked as a pro at golf courses and country clubs in Quebec, Florida, Virginia, and West Virginia. In the late 1970s, Tony relinquished his pro status and began his career in sales, in which he remained until his retirement in 2012. Although he enjoyed watching all types of sports, golf was his passion and he played the game as often as his health allowed.

Tony enjoyed reading, gardening, playing Bingo, and visiting his grandchildren. He always had a funny story to share and had a special talent for the game of Black Jack, another passion of his.

Tony is survived by his wife of 49 years, Irene Stevens Passerby, two sons: Mark (wife Salwa) of Bridgeport, WV, and Kevin (wife Joanna) of Kingwood, WV, and five grandchildren: Micah, Andrew, Emily, Aisha, and Adam. Tony is also survived by his older sister, Gloria Inglis of Vancouver, British Columbia, and his younger brother, Ernie Passerby (wife Karen) of Clarksdale, AZ.

Tony chose to donate his body via the WVU Human Gift Registry to the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine for the advancement of medical education and research. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Margaret Louise Surbaugh

HINTON — Margaret Louise Surbaugh, 81, of 244 Main St., Hinton, died at 12:19 p.m. Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Main Street Care in Hinton following a long illness.

Born May 25, 1932, at Pemberton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lydia Ellen Guess Tate.

Mrs. Surbaugh was a homemaker and member of the Hinton Church of Christ. She loved being with family and friends and enjoyed playing bingo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Surbaugh. Also preceded by a son, Richard Darnell Surbaugh, four brothers, June, Paul, Earl and John Tate, and two sisters, Mary Adkins and Elsie Harrah.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Surbaugh, Jr., and John Surbaugh, both of Hinton, and Keith Surbaugh and wife Kim of Jumping Branch. Five daughters, Patricia Graham and husband Cecil of Lerona, Debra Meador and husband Roger of Lincolnton, NC, and Tresia Pack, Brenda Allen and husband Jeff and Regina Trout all of Hinton. One sister, Shirley Ward of Hinton. Eighteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Jeff Canterbury officiating. Burial will follow in Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be: Timmy Duncan, Michael Graham, David Meador, Nathan Trout, Jeff Davis and Roger Meador.
