Gary Lee Adkins

PAX — Gary Lee Adkins, 36, of Pax, WV, left this world on Monday, November 25, 2013. He drowned doing what he loved to do the most, hunting with his two stepsons.

He was born in Kanawha County and was the son of Connie J. Adkins and David K. Walker.

He was preceded in death by his dad, David Walker; cousin, Steve (Flame) Adkins; grandparents, Cecil and Opal Adkins.

He is survived by his wife, Kacy L. Adkins; daughter, Amber Nicole Adkins; stepdaughter, Samantha Lockhart; stepsons Johnny and Jordan Inman; mother, Connie Adkins; brother, Brian Adkins; and many close friends and family members.

Gary loved to hunt, fish and many other outdoor adventures. He was a well-loved person and will be sadly missed.

Service will be noon Saturday, November 30, at High Lawn Funeral Chapel, Oak Hill. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Dawes Mountain, WV.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.



Cara Lynn Collins

BLUEFIELD — Cara Lynn Collins, 48, of Bluefield, formerly of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013.

Nancy Bell Lowe Dillon

PETERSTOWN — Nancy Bell Lowe Dillon, age 92, of Peterstown, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born February 17, 1921, at Indian Mills, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Bessie Mann Lowe.

Nancy was a caring mother, a devoted wife and a dedicated homemaker who loved to cook and bake for family and friends, always making everyone feel welcome. She was a member of the Peterstown Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the former Marie Ball Ladies Circle.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Charles L. Dillon in 1985; two sisters, Marie Underwood and Sarra Meadows; one brother, Charles L “Junior” Lowe.

She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Mick of Cross Lanes, WV; one son Wayne Dillon and wife Marcia of Forest Hill, WV; two grandchildren, Chris Ferrell and wife Sarah of Mesa, AZ; Michelle Tyson of Teays Valley, WV; four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Mariah Tyson; Harper and Hailey Ferrell.

Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the Fairview Cemetery, Forest Hill, WV, with Rev. Jonathan Jennings officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12 noon on Saturday.

Lura Jirldean Taylor Durham

Lura Jirldean Taylor Durham, age 92, of Grandview, formerly of 523 Bero Avenue, Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 26, 2013.

Lura was born on January 5, 1921, to parents Julia Brevard Taylor and Emerson Taylor in Greenbrier County.

Lura worked at The Nature Shop, Piggly Wiggly, Quickies Market, G. C. Murphy, Beckley Manufacturing and was a successful Avon Representative. Lura also attended Beckley College.

Lura had many interests including flea marketing, yard sales, painting and flowers. She was a member of the Beckley Art Group and Women’s Auxiliary Post 32. She was also very active in her church and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Beckley.

Lura was preceded in death by her loving husband Martin A. Durham; brother, Emerson C. Taylor; her father, Emerson Earl Taylor; her stepfather, Talmor Egnor; and her mother, Julia Brevard Taylor Egnor.

Left to cherish her memory are her twin sister, Luella Iidean Hornsby of Milton, Ohio, and Lura’s four children, Martin Emerson Durham and his wife Ina, of Beckley, Michael Gene Durham and his wife Robbin, of Flat Top, Gary Dean Durham and his wife Cathy, of South Charleston, and Kimberly Luella and her husband Roger W. Redden, of Grandview.

Lura was very caring, giving and tender-hearted and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. She treasured her eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include Michael Dewayne Durham, Rachel Durham Pauley, Merlin Gene Durham, Laura Jane Durham Barbera, Travis Lee Durham, Carrie Jeanette Durham Ray, Andrew Martin Redden and Matthew Guy Redden.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Richard Wagoner officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends and family may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Richard Heath, 61, of Sophia, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.

Thomas W. Howard

MOUNT HOPE — Thomas W. Howard, age 91, of Mt. Hope, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2013, at his residence.

Born February 11, 1922, at Mt. Hope, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Gwendolyn “Gwen” Williams Howard.

Mr. Howard was a 1939 graduate of Mt. Hope High School and studied a year at Greenbrier Military Institute and went on to West Virginia University earning BS and MS degrees in Mining Engineering.

He served his country during WWII fighting in the Pacific Theatre aboard the LST 880.  

He was a member of the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church where he served for many years as a Deacon, Trustee and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class.

He was an avid pilot learning to fly as a teenager and became an instrument and commercial rated private pilot. He regularly flew various aircraft for business and pleasure until about the age of 80. He was an outdoors man who loved to hunt and fish.

His work has always been in the coal industry. In 1961, while serving as Chief Engineer for The New River Company in Mt. Hope, he formed his own consulting Engineering firm, “Thomas W. Howard, Inc.” The company served clients in West Virginia, surrounding states and occasionally abroad.

In 1970 Mr. Howard became General Manager of Beaver Coal Company, Ltd., and served in that capacity for over 20 years. He also served on the Beaver Management Corporation’s Board of Directors for many years.

He was a Registered Professional Engineer, ‘Legion of Honor’ Member of the Society of Mining Engineers and served on the WV State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. His overall contributions to the coal business are well recognized by all in the industry. The family also wishes to thank Mr. Howard’s longtime secretary, office manager and assistant, Margaret Bickford. In 2010 Mr. Howard was inducted into the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Sibray Howard.

Surviving are his three children, Thomas W. Howard II, M.D., and his wife Jan of Hurricane, Linda Howard Brown and husband Steve of Mt. Hope, Charles Howard and his wife Lorna Waddell of Morgantown, six grandchildren, Thomas W. Howard III, M.D., Victor Alex Howard, M.D., James Grant Howard, William Brett Brown, Will Howard and Charley Howard. Also surviving is his sister, Patricia (Pat) Spickard of Shelbyville, Ky.

A special thanks to all his caregivers including: Misty Hall, Sarah Acord, Heather Bowyer, Wanda Ball and to Hospice of Southern WV for their excellent care and oversight.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2013, at the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church 412 Main Street, Mt. Hope, with Rev. Elizabeth Stone officiating. Entombment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services on Friday, November 29, 2013.

Nasiba Mosrie

RAINELLE — Nasiba Mosrie of Rainelle, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2013.

She was born in 1928 in Salima, Lebanon.

She married Cassem Mosrie in August of 1954 and moved to Rainelle where they lived and operated the family business, Mosrie’s Fashion Shop.

Mrs. Mosrie cherished her family and dear friends. As the owner operator of Mosrie’s Fashion Shop for over 50 years, she served many loyal customers and was recognized by the Town of Rainelle as a generous member of the local community with the community and business service award. She attended Rainelle United Methodist Church and was recognized with the well-deserved Mother of the Year. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mosrie was preceded in death by her husband, Cassem Mosrie, in 1972, one sister Jana Masri and two brothers Mouhib “Mo” and Nasib Masri.

She is survived by son Norman Mosrie and wife Julie. Two daughters Nora and husband Roy L. Akers, Jr., Nancy and husband David Duvall; grandchildren Casey and Malina Mosrie, Ali and John Duvall, Ashley and Joseph Akers, and Alex Hilmon; two brothers Adib and Chakib and his wife Rajaa; sister Samira El Dean; sister-in-law Nadene Masri and numerous dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved and who loved her.

A celebration of her life service will be at Rainelle United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 30. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the End of the Trail Cemetery in Clintonville, WV.

Minor Redden

Minor Redden, age 82, of Grandview, WV, passed away at his home on Monday, November 25, 2013.

Born on July 21, 1931, at Table Rock, he was the son of the late Herbert Redden and Ada Harrah Redden.

Minor was a former sawmill employee and a farmer. He was a member of the Crow Baptist Church, where he enjoyed attending his church. Minor enjoyed gardening, attending church, and talking to his friends.

Surviving are a niece, Betty Toney of Beckley, and nephews, David and James Toney of Beckley, and a nephew who was raised with him as a brother, Roy Redden and his wife Joanne of Cleveland, Ohio. Two great-nephews and a great-niece also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Burks officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery at Grandview, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

OCEANA — William F. “Bill” Sams, 80, of Oceana, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013.
