Shellie M. Bolt

Shellie M. Bolt, 58, of Soak Creek passed away with family by her side and loved ones waiting on the banks of the river, on Friday, November 8, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born December 15, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Anna Daniels. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers John and Bob Daniels.

Shellie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was a previous Sophia Troop Girl Scout Leader and PTO member. Shellie was known for her loving and kind personality and was the center of the family. She was an angel while here on earth and will be a special angel in heaven.

Surviving are her husband Larry Bowling, her children Billie Jo Cadle and her husband Billy and Samantha Bolt both of Soak Creek and her stepdaughter Chrissy and Otis Lilly of North Carolina, and stepchildren Denise, Anthony, Jeanie Bowling of PA. She leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Austin, Casey, Abigail, and Anna Cadle. She also leaves behind her sisters Sue Stone and Ted Brown of Beckley, Molly Pate of Beckley, and brothers Leslie (Dumpy) Daniels and wife Darlene of Oak Hill and Charlie Daniels and wife Mable of Beckley. Shellie was also loved by many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, November 12, 2013; friends may call from 11 to 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at the Daniels Family Cemetery at Upper Sandlick, WV. Shellie will be laid to rest beside her parents and brother.

Pallbearers will be Mathew Lilly, Kevin Bowling, Eric Bowling, James Claypool, Kenny Lilly, Ronnie Lambert and Ted Brown.

Roy Thomas Bowden Jr.

On Saturday, November 9th, 2013, our most cherished Roy T. Bowden, Jr., was called to his eternal rest.

In the 77th year of his life, Roy Thomas Bowden Jr. was born on February 1, 1936, in Greenbrier County.

The son of the late Roy Thomas and Geraldine Bowden Sr., his sister Jo Ann Price and an infant brother, Edward, have preceded him in death.

Roy was a man of entrepreneurial spirit. The founder of C&R properties, he was the owner and CEO of STB Inc. Roy opened three of Beckley’s Subway stores. He will be remembered for his high work ethic. Roy was always busy.

When not involved in his business ventures, you could find Roy working in the yard. A sausage maker, he immensely enjoyed preparing for holiday events with his family.

Family was everything to Roy. On the 4th of July 1959, he married the love of his life, Mary Constance Fama. They make their home in Stanaford Acres.

Roy and Connie were blessed with three children, Susan, Roy Thomas III and Belinda. They will forever cherish his memory.

The family worshiped at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, where Roy was active in the Knights of Columbus # 5657.

The family has grown. Susan has married John Berry. They reside in Milford, DE.

Dr. R. Thomas Bowden, III, is married to Leisa Kay. They make their home in Nitro.

Belinda is married to Dr. Jeff Harvey. They live in Beckley.

Roy loved his grandchildren; he and Connie looked forward to attending their events and activities.

He was the doting grandfather of John Michael Berry, Bethany Constance Berry, Philip Thomas Berry, Nicholas Blaine Bowden, Christopher Thomas Bowden, Sarah Elizabeth Harvey, Vincent Thomas Harvey, Ginny Constance Harvey.

Roy is also survived by his niece Andrea Spencer and nephew David Price.

Connie’s family the Famas survive as well.

Although our dear Roy has been called to his eternal rest, remembering him will be easy. We, his loving family, shall do it every day.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12th, The Funeral Liturgy for Roy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. from the St. Francis de Sales Church. Monsignor Samuel Sacus and Father Penn will be the celebrants.

The Rite of Committal will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Roy’s Family will carry him to his rest.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 11th, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. William Donald Wise.

Margaret Vivian Burwell

NARROWS, Va. — Margaret Vivian Burwell, 92, of Narrows, Va., passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Hattie Lucille Bowyer Lemons

SINKS GROVE — Hattie Lucille Bowyer Lemons passed away on November 9, 2013, at the age of 100 years and one month, at her home in Sinks Grove, West Virginia. 

Lucille was born October 4, 1913, at Wolf Creek, WV, the only child of Phillip McClellan and Bettie Ann Whanger Bowyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elmer Lemons, in 1973 and their eldest child, Betty Pearl Lemons McGuire, in 1960.

Lucille dedicated her life to serving others. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 122 at Union for 77 years. She was very active in the Sinks Grove Farm Women (CEOS) having been a charter member and president, and she held county, area and state offices.

She served on the Monroe County Community Service Board (CASE) for ten years, was a member of the Monroe Historical Society, The Friends of Second Creek Board, Monroe County Outreach Ministry and Senior Citizens Board.

Lucille was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church since 1931, past elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and officer in the Women of the Church and Circle.

For twenty-two years she was employed as a sales clerk at Leggett Department Store in Lewisburg. She loved to garden and arrange flowers. She was a hairdresser for people in the community for many years. Lucille was known for her kind and caring personality throughout her life.

She is survived by her two children: Thomas Elmer Lemons, Jr., of Fairlea, WV, and Doris Ann Taylor and husband, Fred Lewis Taylor, II, of Sinks Grove, WV; 4 grandchildren, Travis Shawn Lemons of Ronceverte, WV, Russel Dean Lemons of White Sulphur Springs, WV, Chad Lewis Taylor and wife, Betsy, of Philippi, WV, and Casey Lane Napier and husband, Jason, of Barboursville, WV; 8 great-grandchildren, Korey Steven Lemons of Lewisburg, WV, Thomas Matthew, Treva Magnolia “Maggie” and Travis Maxwell Lemons all of Ronceverte, WV, Safron Lemons of Richmond, VA and Grayson Lewis and Gabrielle Lynne Taylor of Philippi, WV, Lilly SarahBeth Napier of Barboursville, WV; sister-in law, Mayo Lemons of Pickaway, WV; niece, Linda Lemons Walker and husband Dr. Clay Walker of Gainesville, Fla.; nephew, Gary Lemons and wife, Betty, of Pickaway, WV.

A celebration of Lucille’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at Sinks Grove, WV, with Rev. Dexter Taylor and Rev. James Hylton officiating. Burial will follow at the New Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway, WV. 

Friends may call at the church from 9 am. until service time November 12, 2013.

Union Chapter Order of the Eastern Star 122 will conduct memorial services at 10:30 a.m. at the Church.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Lemons, Thomas Lemons, Russel Lemons, Korey Lemons, Gary Lemons and Harold Fitzwater.

Berndel Lilly

FLAT TOP — Keledge Berndel Lilly, 88, of Flat Top, died following a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Hospice Care Unit of the Beckley VA Hospital, where he received excellent care from Dr. Lilly, Dr. Boyd, Erma, the oncology staff, attending physicians, the critical care staff on 3rd floor and the 4th floor Residence Halls/Hospice care staff. Born March 10, 1925, at Dunns, he was the son of the late James William Lilly and Lessie Pearl Lilly Lilly.

Berndel was a graduate of Spanishburg High School and completed a two-year course in Mathematics, Engineering, Mechanics and Internal Combustion Engines from the International Correspondence School of Scranton, PA. 

During World War II, Berndel served three years (1943-46) in the Navy on the USS 1024 LST and was discharged with a rank of Gunner’s Mate Second Class. He had the pleasure of seeing some of his shipmates at several reunions through the years. 

Berndel was employed by Columbia Gas Transmission at the Flat Top Compressor Station and had 42 years of service upon retiring in 1989. He was a lifelong member of the VFW. Post 11075, Shady Spring, WV, and has been a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 132 AF & AM of Princeton since 1954. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason, 32nd degree Shriner of the Charleston, WV, chapter.

Favorite hobbies through the years were fishing, hunting and carpentry, a trade he learned while apprenticing with his father in his early years. He also was strongly involved in the Shawnee Parkway Association and served on Board of Directors of the Lilly Reunion Association since its formation in 1977. He held the office of Vice President of Grounds and Buildings. He faithfully attended the reunion at Flat Top every year and enjoyed fraternizing with “family and friends.” Berndel was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jackie Sowder Lilly; three brothers, Neville Lilly, James Lilly, Jr., and Denzel Lilly.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Kay Lilly Barnett and her husband Steve of Spanishburg; four sisters, Zelda Lilly Bone, presently at The Summit in Oak Hill, Eunice Lilly MacDonald of Loraine, OH, Iris Lilly Cooper and her husband Lawrence of Beckley and Serilla Lilly Dunn of Medina, OH; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend and Bingo partner, Bob Martin; and Mr. Cantrell’s daughter, Loretta, a special friend to Berndel and his daughter during his stay at the VA Hospital.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Keledge Berndel Lilly will be conducted by the Princeton Masonic Lodge No. 134 AF & AM at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Reid Cemetery in Spanishburg where military honors will be provided by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard. Berndel’s Masonic brothers will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Berndel’s name to the Beckley VA Recreational Dept. c/o Beckley Veterans Medical Center, Attn: Robert Estepp, 200 Veterans Ave., Beckley, WV 25801. Berndel enjoyed the bingo, fishing trips, music entertainment, family dinners, trips to Wal-Mart for haircuts and the resulting camaraderie of socializing with fellow veterans from both 4th and 6th floors.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mrs. Mary Miller, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Harlem Heights, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.
