Jean Bell

SISSONVILLE — Emma Jean (Stapleton) Bell, aged 77, of Sissonville, passed away on October 12, 2013.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at the Long and Fisher Funeral Chapel in Sissonville with the family giving eulogy. Interment will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. and last until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Della Kathleen Bragg

EXPORT — Ella Kathleen Bragg, born on October 11th 1934, in Export, W.Va., was called to be with Jesus on her birthday of this year. Della was living in South Carolina, with family, but she always considered West Virginia as her home.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Jones and Elsie Leona Smith Jones.

Della was instrumental in getting the grandparents rights law passed; she also was very involved in her church and volunteering at local food banks. She will be sadly missed by her family and by everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in by death by both of her parents, one sister, six brothers and ex-husband Omer Bragg.

She leaves behind daughters: Betty Whitt of East Kingston, W.Va., Ruth Sears of Summersville, W.Va., Juanita Reynolds of Florence, S.C. and Elsie Whittington of Charleston W.Va.; son Joseph Bragg of Allenhurst, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Willis Mark ‘Bimbo’ Cole

TRUE — Willis Mark “Bimbo” Cole, 58, of True, formerly of Nimitz, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Born October 11, 1955, at Beckley, he was a son of the late Willis Harold and Bonnie Beatrice Pack Cole.

Bimbo was of the Baptist faith and thanked the Lord everyday for his life. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran serving as a MP, an engineer from CSX with 25 years of service, a former miner and construction worker. Bimbo enjoyed hunting, fishing, ginsenging and spending time with family and friends and especially his granddaughters.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Stephanie Cole Creed and husband Thomas and Tracey Thomas; two grandchildren, Kiza Cole and Klohey Cole; six siblings, Judith Cannon and husband Bobby, Rita Keaton, Billy Cole and wife Sharon, Bonnie Gail Tickle and husband Floyd, Lisa Mullins and husband Bobby and Denton Cole and wife Mary and friend, Penny Cole. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz, with J.P. Mays officiating. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery from 10:30 a.m. until time of services.

John ‘Johnny’ Nile Condia

ARNETT — John “Johnny” Nile Condia, 77, of Arnett, tragically lost his life on Friday, October 11, 2013.

He was a self employed contractor until becoming disabled. He enjoyed fishing and watching baseball on T.V.

John was born on January 20, 1936, at Stickney, W.Va., to the late Pete and Elsie O’Dell Condia.

Also preceding him in death were his wife, Debra Kay Cook Condia on June 1, 2009; a brother, Robert L. “Shorty” Condia; sisters, Esther “Connie” Joyner Peele and Annetta Condia Jones

Surviving are a daughter, Crystal Condia McCourt and her husband Jeremy of Whitesville; granddaughter, Lexi Jayde McCourt of Whitesville; sisters, Dolly Condia Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio; brothers, Whorley “Buncy” Condia of Newport, Tenn. and Pete Condia Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Glen White Church of God with Rev. Jesse Farley officiating. Burial will follow at the Hall Cemetery, Bee Branch Road at Dameron.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.  

Family and close friends will serve as pallbearers.

SUMMERSVILLE — Effie Hanseman, 82, of Summersville, died Saturday, October 12, 2013.

Memorial mass services will be celebrated at noon on Friday, October 18, 2013 in the St. John’s Catholic Church with Father Xavier Cooney officiating. Interment of the cremains will be at a later time.

Mazie Harrison

On October 14th, 2013, God stretched out his hand to bring another angel home.

Born August 5th, 1945, at Eccles, Mazie Mae Harrison, 68, was a homemaker who loved spending time with her family and her flowers. She was the daughter of the late Hoffard and Mable Lambert.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cassandra Harrison and her two sisters, Dixie Dunbar and Donna Cozart.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Elmore Harrison and daughter, Pamela Harrison at home, her daughter and also her caregiver, Patricia and her husband, Billy Daniels of Glen Daniel, her two sons, Mike Harrison of Eccles and Steve Harrison along with his wife, Priscilla of Stanaford, also 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, six sisters, two brothers, several nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.   

Melton Mortuary will be assisting the family. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the services.

Melville S. ‘Bud’ Johnson III

HINTON — Melville S. “Bud” Johnson III, 83, of 208 Hill St., Hinton, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at his home.

Born April 12, 1930, at Thurmond, he was the son of the late Samuel Owen and Charlotte Peggy Cales Johnson.

Bud was a 1948 graduate of Hinton High School. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Baltimore and was a member of the Pipefitters Union. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Hinton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Arthur Johnson in December 2012. Also preceded by three brothers, Kenneth Owen, Bobby Joe and Daniel Louis Johnson and one sister, Doris Sue Neighbors.

Survivors include a son, David Johnson and wife Carolyn of Hinton; a brother, Arnold Lee Johnson of Hinton; a sister, Wilma Angotti of Hinton; two grandchildren, Caryne Johnson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Melville S. Johnson IV of Washington, D.C.; an aunt, Kathleen Tucker of Beckley and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson of Gastonia, N.C.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Butch Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. Friends may call from noon until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

James A. Lilly

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — James A. Lilly, 87, formerly of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Lilly was a World War II Veteran.

He was a small business owner in Beckley, in the 1970s.

Mr. Lilly was a 60 year member of the IBEW and was a Master Electrician until his retirement.

He was born Oct. 7, 1925, and raised in Beckley, but moved to Alabama in 2000 to be close to his daughter, Vicki, and her family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Norvell and Dora Lilly, his brother Norvell Lilly and his daughter Vicki Cole. Also preceding him was first wife, Betty Jo Callaway and his second wife Betty P. Lilly.

He is survived by his daughter, Debra Ann Moss of Buckhannon, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Jodi Worley and Jenni Pennington of Beckley; step son, Phil Lawson of Midland, Texas; one sister Mary Simpson of Colorado; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A private family service was held on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013. Per his wishes, he was cremated.

Dr. Ernest L. ‘Ernie’ Martin

Dr. Ernest L. “Ernie” Martin, formerly of Smoot, died Sept. 29, 2013, in Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, in the mausoleum chapel of Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with Mr. Neal Holliday officiating. The Martin family is honored to have Merrill and Donna Witt singing during the service. Burial will follow in the Burns Family Cemetery. As a proud former Marine, Ernie will be buried with military honors by the U. S. Marine Corps. Semper Fi.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel. Family and friends are invited to attend this farewell to Ernie.

Rosetta McCombs

LEIVASY — Rosetta McCombs, 91, of Leivasy, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Summersville Regional Medical Center’s nursing facility with her family by her side.

Born March 11, 1922, at Jettsville, she was the daughter of the late Lovell Stewart and Laura Amick Pittsenbarger.

She was a homemaker and a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church, Leivasy. After her family, her greatest joys were gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband for 64 years, Marvin “Flathead” McCombs, on March 25, 2011, her son, John Michael McCombs on March 13, 1991, a brother, Aaron Pittsenbarger and three sisters, Geraldine Pittsenbarger, Ruth Rarden and Arthesta Martin.

Survivors include: daughter-in-law, Diana McCombs of Leivasy; grandson, Mike McCombs and wife, Paula, of Culpeper, Va. and their children, Emily and Makayla; granddaughter, Melinda Broyles and husband, Michael, of Leivasy, and their children, Skyler, Tyler and Brianna and the Russells, the Amicks, and the Thomases who all knew her as “Maw Maw."

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the New Prospect Baptist Church, Leivasy, with Rev. John Thomas and Rev. Tim McClung officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

OAK HILL — Russell Henry McKinney, 52, of Oak Hill, died on Monday, October 14, 2013.

CHARLESTON — Judy Lynn McMillion, 64, of Charleston, W.Va., passed away Friday, October 11, 2013.

 Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Temple Baptist Church 209 Morris Street in Charleston. Interment will follow at Kenna Family Cemetery in Kenna, W.Va.

Lovina Ruth “Venus” Morgan, 36, of  Old Crow Road, Beaver, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Velma Loretta  Newton

CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Velma Loretta Newton, 83, of Cedar Bluff, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013, at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va.

She was born in Denton, Ky., the  daughter of the late Howard and Herma Stewart Waugh.

She was a fulltime homemaker, a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.  

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Newton; son, Douglas Newton; son in law, Douglas Scherer; and nine brothers and sisters.

Those who remain to carry on her spirit are her daughters, Martha “Starchie” Price and husband David of Columbia, S.C., Pam Childers and husband Dale of Pounding Mill, Va. and Carla Scherer of Pounding Mill; sisters, Grace Pittman and Yvonne Leffel, both of Oak Hill, W.Va.; brother, Harry Waugh of Oak Hill, Va.; grandchildren: Rhonda Wilson, Clint Hayslett, Adam Childers, Ashlea Childers, Hailey Scherer and Noah Scherer; ten great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Tyree Funeral Home, 999 Jones Avenue, Oak Hill, W.Va. The Pastors Mark Brooks and Clint Hayslett will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Gethsemane Gardens in Oak Hill, W.Va.

Gail Rosetta Poore Staunton

FAYETTEVILLE — Mrs. Gail Rosetta Poore Staunton, 58, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, October 12, 2013.

Born December 3, 1954, in Kaymoor, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clinton Lee Poore and Daisy Beata Crowe.

Mrs. Staunton was a customer service worker at Walmart and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Garten.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Wright.

Raymond C. Taylor

NORTHWOOD, Ohio — Raymond C. Taylor, 62, of Northwood, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio.

He was born in Oak Hill, on August 11, 1951, to Floyd R. and Daisy (Ballard) Taylor.

For 45 years, Ray worked for Cargill then The Anderson’s Grain Elevator, Inc. In his spare time, enjoyed working on cars, a hobby that began at the age of 14. He was a classic car and hot rod fanatic. He loved to work in the yard, he loved traveling, going casino hopping and spending time with family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marsha (Leonard) Taylor; mother, Daisy Taylor; daughters, Donna (Rick II) Cutcher and Mindy Taylor (Bryan); grandchildren, Rick Cutcher III, Richard (Des) Castillo and Raymond Castillo, Jacob Cutcher, Kayla Taylor and Sanford Fraley; siblings, Floyd (Carol), Ellen Morton, George (Linda), Jerry (Marylou), Eddie (Paula), Patricia Myrice, Virginia (Dale) Jones and Gary (Kathy); sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Charline (Tom) Parkhurst, Karen Kralik, Cheryl (Bill) Bogdanski, Chuck (Rachael) Leonard, Patricia Wilson and Kevin (Debbie) Leonard along with many nieces and nephews and extended family, Scott and Jennifer Struffolino and children.

Ray was preceded in death by his father, Floyd R. Taylor and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Faye Leonard.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2013, in the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S Wynn Rd., Oregon, where the funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Nickolas G. Vorras

Nickolas G. Vorras, 62, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Berkeley Medical Center, after suffering from multiple CVA’s since May 31, 2013.

Born in New York City, N.Y., on November 2, 1950, he was the son of the late Nick and Marie Vorras.

Nick was a 1969 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. He had lived many years in Salisbury Md., Goose Creek and Charleston S.C. and finally in Martinsburg W.Va. since 2009.

He is survived by a daughter Janet Vorras Devlin and two grandsons of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; a sister Mary Vorras Gilkerson; a niece Stacey Gilkerson and nephew Kenny Gilkerson of Martinsburg W.Va.; his girlfriend of four years Cathy McGraw from Beckley and a life long friend/brother Walter “Steve” Edwards of Stanaford, W.Va.

Nick was an avid artist, photographer, gardener, and cook. He also enjoyed traveling, riding /rebuilding motorcycles, custom vans, and home projects ranging from building furniture to remodeling. No project was too big with his talent and love for creativeness. Nick’s ongoing sense of humor and liveliness will surely be missed.

In addition to his parents, his older brother Lewis E. Bonnie preceded him in death.

Honoring Nick’s wishes cremation followed. A memorial with family will be scheduled at a later date.

Darrell Worley

PENHOOK, Va. — Darrell Worley, 70, of Penhook, formerly of Mullens, peacefully departed this life for an everlasting one on October 14, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He graciously accepted the calling of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

While attending Mullens High School, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp at the age of 17.  After serving multiple tours overseas, he returned home to work for Consolidated Coal Company in Itmann, W.Va. for 23 years. Many of his co-workers called him “Bumper”. He was a member of the UMWA where he also served as an officer.

Proceeding him in death were his parents, Delbert and Edith Worley; infant sister, Carol Worley and a grandson who he raised and dearly loved, Nicolas McCroskey.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Julie Worley; daughters, Debra McCroskey of Penhook and  Shelby King of Charleston, W.Va.; granddaughter, Hillary King, attending law school in Salt Lake City, Utah; and great-granddaughter Taylor McCroskey of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Harold Worley and his wife Gloria of Mullens; sisters, Lynn Byers and her husband Don of Texas and Sandy Francis and her husband Terry of Cincinnati, Ohio and many other special friends and family.

He will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.

Services will be conducted at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton, W.Va. on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Reverend Roger “Mouse” Lusk officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the chapel from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
