Devonia Nina ‘Button’ Bailey

GLEN FORK — Devonia Nina “Button” Bailey, 76, of Glen Fork, WV, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

She was born February 9, 1937, in Kayford, WV, a daughter of the late Denver and Pauline Bradshaw Norton.

She attended the New Hope Church at Indian Creek.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Bailey; a son Frankie Bailey; two sisters Sue Baldwin, and Elenor Anderson; and two brothers Mike Norton, and Chester Norton.

Survivors include two sons Timmy D. Bailey of Glen Fork, and Mike (Shelia) Bailey of Glen Fork; two sisters Ann Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Mary Martinez of Goshen, IN; three brothers Charles (Sandy) Norton of Belle, Jim Norton of Belle, and Roger (Sarah) Norton of Goshen, IN; five grandchildren Patrick, Daniel, Ryan, Gabriel, and Brianna; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV, with Rev. Leonard Sizemore officiating. Devonia will be laid to rest in Glen Fork Community Cemetery.

Friends may gather with the family on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Johnny Mack Brown Sr.

DAVIN — Johnny Mack Brown, Sr., 59, of Davin, WV, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013.

He was born March 17, 1954, in Logan, WV, a son of the late Jesse Joseph and Gladys Marie Spears Brown.

He was the owner and operator of J & S Leasing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother James Ray Brown.

Survivors include his loving wife Nancy Ruth Harless Brown; a daughter Sarah Jo Ellen Brown of Davin; a son Johnny Mack (Lori) Brown, Jr., of Baileysville; two sisters Sharon Kay Brown of Davin, and Patricia Gail (Tommy) Payne of Davin; four brothers Jackie Ray (Cindy) Brown of Davin, Jesse Allen (Vicky) Brown of Davin, Randy Lynn Brown of Cyclone, and Carmel Wayne Brown of Davin; three grandchildren Johnny Mack Brown, III, Nathanael Lee Brown, and Madison Rose Marie Brown; mother-in-law Naomi Harless of Davin; brother-in-law Joe Harless of Cyclone; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Lynco Pentecostal House of Prayer, Lynco, WV, with Pastor Randy Massey officiating. Friends may gather with the family on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church. In keeping with Johnny’s wishes he will be cremated.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Johnny’s name to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or the Lynco Pentecostal House of Prayer.

Margaret Ann Dickesson

FENWICK — Margaret Ann Dickesson, 65, of Fenwick, formerly of Kellogg, Idaho, and Hominy Falls, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the O’Dell Cemetery in Hominy Falls, with Pastor Ryan Prescott officiating. Friends may gather with the family at 1:30 p.m. until time of service at the cemetery.

SUMMERSVILLE — Abigail Lynn Ramsey Hypes, 23, of Summersville, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the White Funeral Home at Summersville with the Rev. Sam Gray officiating. Interment will follow in the Zoar Church Cemetery at Keslers Cross Lanes. Friends may call one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the funeral home.

LEWISBURG — Patricia Ann Hedrick King, 68, of Lewisburg, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Rhema Christian Center, Fairlea, with the Rev. Stewart Farley officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Park Cemetery, Second Creek. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rhema Christian Center.

VERDUNVILLE — Julia Moore, 81, of Verdunville passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.

James Vernon Ramsey

RAINELLE — James Vernon Ramsey, 81, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness.

Born Sept. 6, 1932, at Winona, he was the son of the late James Addison and Vada May Petry Ramsey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Glades Jean Ramsey.

Mr. Ramsey had worked as Parts Manager for Paul Boggs Auto Sales and as Electronics Manager for Aide’s Discount Store, both in Rainelle. He was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. His hobbies included woodworking, collecting knives, and playing the guitar, especially for country gospel singers.

Survivors include: his wife, Doreen M. Ramsey; three daughters, Sandra Mae Ramsey of Rutherfordton, NC, Carol Lynn Ratliff and husband, Jeff, and Carla Jean Foley and husband, Ray, all of Smoot; one son, Jeffrey Allen Ramsey of Rainelle; two sisters, Carolyn Bradshaw and husband, Noah, of Crisfield, MD, and Kathy Ramsey of Morgantown; one brother, Donald Ramsey and wife, Harrietta, of Rainelle; eight (8) grandchildren; and eight (8) great-grandchildren.

Private family services have already been held.

Robert Salmons

FAYETTEVILLE — Robert W. (Bob) Salmons, 79, of Fayetteville, WV, passed away October 5th at home following a short illness.

Born July 25, 1934, in Bath County, Virginia, Bob moved to West Virginia in 1954 and married the love of his life, Eunice Marie Arnold, in 1955. In their 58 years of marriage they were blessed with five children: Shirley Wood and husband Steve of Bedford, VA, Carolyn Spinney and husband Tim of Albuquerque, NM, Steve Salmons and wife Deanna of Fayetteville, WV, Dale Salmons and wife Valerie of Lancaster, PA, and Phyllis Wilson and husband Mickey of Richmond, VA; Grandchildren: Amanda and Sarah Spinney, Josh and Tryston Evans, Audrey, Alden and Lydia Salmons.

Throughout his years he worked for various construction and surface mining companies. He retired from Peabody Coal Company in 1993.

Bob was of the Christian faith.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, where the funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 8th, with the Rev. Justin Seay officiating and where the family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until time of service. Burial will be in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Joann ‘Jodi’ Steffy

Loving sister, aunt, friend passed away on Sept. 16th, 2013, at Beckley. Jodi was her nickname; her family called her Jo or Joann. Jodi was born on June 1st, 1951, at Hurley, VA, to the late Opal and Luther Shortridge. Jodi was raised in Buchanan County and graduated from Hurley High School in 1969.

After graduation, she went to Washington, DC, and worked for the FBI. She met her husband, Roger Mitchem, and moved to Beckley. There she worked for the Bank of Raleigh for years. She went from being a teller to branch manager. After Bank of Raleigh, she worked for Pioneer Community Bank for five years as assistant manager and cashier. She was devoted and loved her life in banking. She attended Mountain State and school of banking.

Later in retirement, she worked for Tamarack the Best of WV for years.

She later married Ed Steffy, who lives in Statesville, VA, and they remained good friends.

She cherished her precious time she had with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Opal Shortridge, a brother, Pete Shortridge, and a sister, Phyllis Hunt.

Those left to cherish her memories include her best friends for years, Ron Cook, brother, Roger and wife Janice Shortridge of Abingdon, VA, Johnny Shortridge and youngest “Baby Brother,” Austin Shortridge and wife, Lynete, both of Hurley, VA; sisters, Kathy, husband, Carlson Robinette of New Tazewell, TN, Sharon Hurley, Shirley and Jimmy Stacy both of Hurley, VA; included are several nieces and nephew. Two special nieces that were always there to love her were Bobbie Blankenship of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Marlee Hibitts of Hurley, VA; special nephew, Austin Chance Shortridge of Hurley, VA. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

The family is deeply indebted to her friends of many years. At Jodi’s request, there will be no services.

A celebration of her life will be held at the family cemetery where her remains will be laid to rest beside her parents.

In keeping with Jodi’s wishes, she will be cremated.
