John ‘Harry’ Allen
PETERSTOWN — John “Harry” Allen, 94 years, 11 months and 10 days, of Peterstown, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.
Born in Monroe County on October 20, 1918, he was a son of the late Lee H. and Lura Wills Allen.
Harry was a member of the CCC’s and a member of the Lindside United Methodist Church and was a Mason. Mr. Allen was a farmer, merchant, contractor and a avid fisherman, he had spent his entire life in Monroe County. He was married to the late Christine Dillow Allen for 53 years.
He was preceded in death one son John David Allen; four brothers, Cliffton, Timmy, Eugene and Woodrow Allen; three sisters, Rena Humphrey, Geraldine Shires and Thelma Pennington.
He is survived by two sons Robert Lee and wife Marjorie Allen and Roger Lee and wife Judy Allen, all of Lindside; four grandchildren David T. Allen of Fredericksburg, Va., Brian K. and wife Sharon Allen of Alderson, Terah Allen Horootunian and husband Christopher of Plymouth, Mass. and LaChrista Allen Campbell and husband Robert of Floyd, Va.; three great grandchildren Connor Allen, Angelina Harootunian and Gianna Harootunian, one sister Betty Allen Mutter and husband Cunningham of Oakwood, Va. and sister-in-law Frances Lane Allen of Peterstown, and many nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Lindside United Methodist Church with Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Lindside.

PINEVILLE — Kathy Blankenship, 59, of Pineville, passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at her residence following a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 5, 1954, at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Gladys Brooks Ellison.
Kathy was a lifelong resident of Pineville. She was a 1972 Pineville High School graduate; was part owner of Riteway Packette, was manager at Pinnacle Creek Country Store, and had worked at Woody’s. Kathy enjoyed the love of her life, her only grandchild, Emma.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Curtis and Marie Blankenship.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Blankenship of Pineville; son, Tommy Blankenship and his wife, Kim of Corinne; two brothers, Timmy Ellison and his wife, Sherri of Pineville and Wayne Ellison and his wife, Susan of Keyrock; a sister, Pam Ellison of Rockview; two brothers-in-law, Danny Blankenship of Beckley and Eddy Blankenship of Rockview; a sister-in-law, Peggy Baldwin and her husband, Larry of Rockview; a granddaughter, Emma Blankenship; a niece, Kim Toler of Beckley; three nephews, Erik Baldwin of Princeton, Jonathan Baldwin of Bluefield, Chris Baldwin of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by many aunts and uncles.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Evan Arkell officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 3.
Entombment will follow in the Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

CALDWELL — Bertha Mae Boggs, 87, of Caldwell, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 10, 1925, at Blue Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Russell Williams and Charles Wilda Scruggs Williams and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Paul W. Boggs in 2002; brothers, Clinton, Kyle, Woodrow, Lawrence, James, Leslie and Jess Williams and sister, Naomi Hylton.
Bertha worked at Boggs Auto Parts in Caldwell, a business that Paul and Bertha started over 60 years ago. She worked every day up until the time of her illness in July.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting and spending time with her family and talking with the customers at work.
Bertha is survived by her children, sons, Paul Jr. and Teresa of Caldwell, Russell and Andrea of Lewisburg; daughters, Pamela Laursen and Lee of Roanoke, Va., Burnitice Booze and Robert of Caldwell, Kimberly Counts and Eddie of Harts Run and a sister, Nora Blanche Karnes of Princeton; eight grandchildren, Michelle Surgeon and Jeff of Fincastle, Va., Michael Boggs and Alicia of Elkins, W.Va., Amelia Evans and Mark of Indiana, Christy Boggs of Port Orange, Fla., Russell Boggs Jr. and Holly of White Sulphur Springs, Brittany Boggs of White Sulphur Springs, Spencer Thomas of Williamsburg and Jeremy Counts of Harts Run and 12 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kara, Abigail, Caden, Lydia, Nathan, Caitland, Cassidi, Regan, Leaha, Anse and Calleigh.

DANESE — Charles A. Bowyer, 83, of Danese, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 30, 2013, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Born October 4, 1929, at Danese, he was the son of the late Leslie and Lemma Fink Bowyer.
Charles was a retired school bus operator for Fayette County Schools, a part-time clerk for the Danese Post Office and served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, of 58 years, Mildred Forren Bowyer; his daughter Deborah Douglas and husband James D. of Fraziers Bottom; a sister Anna Lee Lilly of Beaver; his grandson Charles Thomas Douglas of Fraziers Bottom; a special friend and helper Donnie Martin of Danese; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, October 4, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Entombment will be in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville.

William P. ‘Billy’ Browskey
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our most loved, Billy Browskey. Billy, age 71, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 29th, 2013, following coronary artery bypass surgery at the University of Virginia Hospital with his family by his side.
An only child, Billy was born on Nov. 8th, 1941, in Sophia. His parents were the late Marianna Milano Lorenz and William Browskey. Billy’s mother later married the late Walter Ludwig Lorenz, whom Billy loved as a father. Billy was also blessed with spending a large portion of his young life with his maternal grandparents, aunts and uncles while they operated the Sophia Cash Market.
Billy was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
Billy was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1960. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving our country during the Korean War.
In 1965, Billy and his mother, Ann started the Char in downtown Beckley with the help of Wally who traveled and worked the printing press business.
His most proud accomplishment, with the help of his mother and friends in the business community, was building Beckley’s dining showplace, The Char in 1975, on Dry Hill Road.
As a result of his lifelong service in the restaurant business, and living most of his life in Beckley, Billy was blessed with an abundance of friends whom he treasured as family. Billy was a kind, caring, gentle, loving man, who treasured home, family and friends. In his leisure time, Billy enjoyed shooting sporting clays, visiting the pawn shop and regularly meeting his friends for dinner.
In 1960, Billy married the love of his life, Patty Lusk. To this union was born their beloved daughter, Kimberly Browskey Fairchild and her husband, Gary. He was “Papaw Billy” to Kelli Howell and her companion, Stephen Crigger of Bluefield, Doss Howell and his wife, Amy of Beckley; the proud great grandfather of Collin and Gavin. On August 13, 2011, with Patty’s passing, a part of Billy went to be with the Lord.
Billy will always be remembered for his passionate love and care of Patty, their parents, their families and friends. His beautiful smile and kind spirit would brighten all our days.
The Rite for Burial of the Dead with Holy Communion will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 4th, at 3 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley. Rev. Roy Gene Crist is the celebrant assisted by Rev. Jon White. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the service hour.

Charles ‘Chuck’ David Carroll
QUINWOOD — Our loving father and husband, Charles “Chuck” David Carroll, 67, of Quinwood, went home to be with the Lord, late Tuesday night, Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence, following a long illness.
Born April 30, 1946, at Quinwood, he was the son of the late Walter Edward “Toots” Carroll and Thelma Ann Rutherford Carroll.
Chuck was a member and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Quinwood. He was also a member of the Masons, Greenbrier Valley Shriner’s Club and Beni Kedem. He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam Veteran, a member o the VFW John Page Post No. 4484 of Rainelle, was former District Commander, Quartermaster, Senior Vice Commander and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Chuck was a member of the UMWA and worked in the coal mines for nearly 20 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Carroll.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Evelyn E. O’Dell Carroll of Quinwood; two daughters, Melanie Dempsey and husband, Bill of Elkins and Jamie Howard and husband, Stephen of Meadow Bridge; two sons, Mark Carroll and wife, Ellen of Proctorville, Ohio and Jason Carroll of Quinwood; a sister, Helen Ruth Dudley of Covington, Va.; a brother, Earl “Buddy” Carroll and wife, Lana of Covington; a sister-in-law, Ruth Carol of Rupert and six grandchildren, Ethan, Zachary, Tyler, Kaylee, Gabrielle and Caitlynn.

Betty Frances Christian, age 77, of Glen White, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born on January 30, 1935, in Oceana, she was the daughter Dant Hoover and Versie Marie Hawley Hoover.
Mrs. Christian was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Christian, by a daughter Brenda Sue Petrosky.
Surviving are her children, Donna McClaugherty and her husband Larry of Pasadena, Md., Artie Pierce and her husband Roger of MacArthur, Barbara Craddock and her husband Gary of Arnett, James Christian II of Glen White, Ann Berry of Florida, Ronald Christian of Beckley, Amanda Stone and her husband Timmy of Florida, Jason Christian and his wife Tracy of North Carolina; 35 grandchildren, including two special grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Jennifer Stump Cox 42, of Grandview, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013.
Born June 15, 1971, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Daniel Lee Stump of Daniels, and Drema Hall Stump Hewlett of Grandview.
Jennifer was a Christian, she was baptized at Light House Baptist Church in Grandview. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Edwards for many years. She loved family gatherings, and being with her friends, but loved to watch her daughter Carlie play volleyball, and cherished her son John’s drawings.
Jennifer was preceded in death by her grand parents Daniel and Josie Stump, and Rudolph and Gerthleen Hall.
In addition to her parents those left to cherish her memory include her son John Adrian Martin, her daughter Carlie Rae Cox, her sister Denise Matherly, her brother Jeremy Stump and a niece Miranda Matherly and a host of Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and beloved friends.

Daniel Lee Goodwin
SPEEDWAY — Daniel Lee Goodwin, 56, of the Brush Creek Falls Road, Speedway, died Monday, September 30, 2013, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born September 8, 1957, in Marietta Ohio, he was the son of Locie Fair Jett Goodwin of Virginia and the late Robert Lee Goodwin.
Daniel was a graduate of Glen Rogers High School and ITT Academy in South Charleston.
Daniel was a former coal miner having worked at Itmann and a former employee for Danka Corporation in Charleston. While his health permitted, he was an avid outdoorsman, especially hunting with his rabbit beagle. He was a member of Lerona United Methodist Church at Lerona.
He will be sadly missed by his mother, Locie. His wife of 31 years, Latricia Elaine Johnson Goodwin. His daughter, Shannon Marie Dunn of Speedway; two grandchildren, Robert Wesley Dunn and Serenity Faith Dunn; two adopted daughters, Dottie Bole and Katrina Bennett, and their children, Julia Faith Boone and Makayla Leigh Boone; two brothers, Robert Allen Goodwin and David Christopher Goodwin; a former sister in law, Tammy; niece Heather and her fiancée Dusty.
A memorial service to celebrate the home going of Daniel will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Lerona United Methodist Church with Pastor’s David Damewood and Rick Chester officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Allen Family Cemetery at Bolt.

MULLENS — Margaret Louise Hollins Mills, 83, of Mullens, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.
Born October 14, 1929, at Besoco, she was the daughter of the late Harry Allen and Hazel Etta (Kirk) Hollins.
Mrs. Mills was a homemaker. She was a founding member of the Black Eagle First Baptist Church, where she has served as the only church secretary since its beginning.
In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Allen Hollins Jr. and a sister, Betty Lou Hazelwood.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 66 years, Wallace A. Mills; two daughters, Jean Cabral of Mullens and Joyce Babineau and her husband, Bob of Shady Spring; one son, Wallace “Spike” Mills Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Summersville; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Rev. Moore was a mechanic, coal miner and a member of First Baptist Church, Rhodell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lloyd, Monroe, Harvey and Robert Lee Moore; two sisters, Nora Hatcher and Isabell Moore.

CLOVER, S.C. — Sandra Kay Acord-Webb of Clover, formerly of Glen Daniel, passed away on September 28, 2013.
Kay was born on July 6, 1967. She was the daughter of the late William Lee “Bill” Acord and Shirley Ann Acord. She was preceded in her death by her brother, William Lee “Bud” Acord and her sister, Angela Lynn Acord.
Those left to cherish her memory are Shirley Ann Acord of Lester; daughter, Bobbie Kay Miller of Charlotte, N.C. and her children Tristan, Alex, Cruz and MiaIsabella; daughter, Adrian Lynn Webb also of Charlotte and her children, Anthony, Liliana Kay, Rose and Yazmine Alejandra; two sisters, Crystal Ann Acord of Charlotte and Billie Jean Marshall of Crab Orchard. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who loved “Kay-Kay” dearly, especially Jonathan who was closest to her.
Kay will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Viewing will be Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m.
Her wishes were to be cremated.

Naomi Lilly Wood
SCARBRO — Naomi Lilly Wood, 95, of Scarbro, died at 11:42 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Plateau Medical Center following a short illness.
Born January 3, 1918, at Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Emert E. and Rose E. Cottle Lilly.
Mrs. Lilly was a homemaker and a member of the Scarbro United Methodist Church. She had been a 61 years resident of Scarbro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen H. Wood in 1997; three brothers, Ralph, John and Edgar Lilly and by four sisters, Louise Allen, Leota Solacz and Avenell and Christine Lilly.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Wood and wife Jo Ann of Manassas, Va. and Ronald Wood and wife Carol of Beaver; two daughters, Betty Davis of Scarbro and Janet Suptic and husband John of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Buster Lilly and wife Phyllis of Shady Spring and Athoel Lilly of Marie; one sister, Viola Lilly Buckland of Forest Hill; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Mike Kessinger officiating. Burial will follow in Roles Chapel Church Cemetery at Forest Hill. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
