On Monday, March 11th, 2013, our most cherished, Peggy Newman, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital. She was in her 80th year of life.
Born on May 6th, 1932 at Eccles, Peggy Jean Daniel was the only child of the late Clifford and Tamer Almedia Peters Daniel.
In 1940, Peggy was walking home from Mattsville Church with her mother, she was only eight years of age at the time. Russell Newman, a Sandlick boy was out and about and Peggy caught his eye. Russ asked Peggy’s mother, “for her hand in marriage.” Mrs. Daniel said, “Come back when she’s 15.” Russ and Peggy were married on Sept. 3rd, 1949. To this union was born ten children, Robert Neal, Jerry Wayne, James Lee, Deborah Lynn, Larry Gene, Mary Carol, David Scott, Russell Claud, John Phillip, and Brian Keith.
While Russ worked hard all his life to support his family, Peggy worked hard at home being a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Peggy and Russ loved their family.
Peggy and Russ’s life has had many blessings and many difficult times, but they always held together. Robert Neal, Jerry Wayne and James Lee have passed away as adults as well as Russell Claud dying in infancy.
The blessings are great, Deborah is married to James Akers, Mary Carol is married to Ray McGrady, David is married to Hallie, John is married to Jennifer and Brian is married to Sherry. A grandson, Michael James was raised by Peggy and Russ as if he was their own son. They were blessed as well to have 17 additional grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Six months, and seven days ago, Russell Newman passed away on Sept. 4th, 2012, and now, “Oh Glad Reunion.”
On noon this Thursday, March 14th, there will be a committal service at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley. Family friend, Pastor Paul Lucas will be officiating.
