Mary Adkins

HINTON —- Mary Adkins, 78, of Hinton, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital in Hinton.

Leon Rosa Amick

NETTIE — Leon Rosa Amick, 95, went home to Heaven on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Richwood, W.Va.

She was born June 10,1917, at Carl, and was the daughter of the late Watson and Anna Jones O’Dell.

Leon was a Baptist and a Christian by faith, and a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Nettie.  Leon loved God and worshipped and praised him daily. She will be remembered for her sincere kindness and Christian love of everyone she met.

In addition to her parents, Leon was preceded in death by  her husband of 47 years, James Orville Amick; a son, James Delmas Amick; paternal grandparents, Early Downtain O’Dell and Mary Ann O’Dell; maternal grandparents, Fountain and Almarinda Jones; and her brothers, Jenessee “Boots” O’Dell and Bob O’Dell; sisters, Elivee Amick, Louvella Amick, Reva Spencer and Ruby McCutcheon.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Wanda Jane McCutcheon and husband, James McCutcheon of Canvas, Mary Wolverton and husband, John Wolverton of Camden-on-Gauley; a  granddaughter, Angela Lynn Amick, and finance, Jack Daugherty, of Summersville; one grandson, Nathan Gwinn and his wife, Brandi, of Petersburg, Va.; a sister, Rosie Thomas of Leivasy; great-grandson, Aiden Gwinn, and step grandchildren, Crystal King and Andrew Wolverton; step-great-grandchildren, Nelson and Shyanne King and Anna and James Wolverton.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, in the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Nettie, with the Rev. Ryan Trescott officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Nettie.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the church.

Lisa Michelle Short Blackburn

SIMON — Lisa Michelle Short Blackburn, 46, of Simon, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Randy Bowels officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va.

Doris Stewart Browning

PINEVILLE — Doris Stewart Browning, 83, of Pineville, passed away Saturday,  March 9, 2013, at her residence following a long illness.

Born February 7, 1930, at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Jay H. and Verda Walker Stewart.

Mrs. Browning was a member of the Rock Castle Baptist Church. She enjoyed camping, going to church, cooking, working in her yard, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Viv Browning; a brother, Ted Stewart and a sister, Ruby Ellison.

Survivors include her son Gary Browning and his wife, Brenda of Pineville; two step-grandchildren,   Brandon Blaylock of Dallas, Texas and Julie Blaylock of Charleston; two step-great grandchildren: Dylan and Taylor Blaylock and their mother Tonya Blaylock.  

A celebration of Doris’s life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Evan Arkell and Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.

Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

WHITMAN — Evelyn Brumfield, 82, of Whitman, passed away Monday March 11, 2013.

Lloyd Michael “Mike” Costelli, 58, of 216 South Vance Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, March 12th, 2013.

William Otis Dempsey

TIOGA — William Otis Dempsey, 76, of Tioga, Nicholas County, died Monday, March 11, 2013.

Charles B. Howard

Charles B. Howard, 82, of Dorothy, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at CAMC, Memorial Division Charleston, W.Va., after a long illness.

Charles was born December 6, 1930, to the late Elmer and Theodora Gilmore Howard of Swampscott, Mass.

He was retired from Newark Electronics in Mass. Charles proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He was an active member of the Dorothy Assembly of God Church, where he served as Deacon. He loved gospel music. His grandchildren were his pride and Joy.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 58 years, Janet; a son, Charles (Janie) Howard Jr.; four grandchildren, Angel (Danny) Davis; Patricia (James) Williams; Kara Howard; Justin Howard; four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, March 14, 2013, with a celebration of Charles life beginning at 8 p.m. that evening  at the Dorothy Assembly of God, Dorothy, with Pastor Jerry Pauley and Chaplin Jim Ferrell officiating. Following the Thursday visitation and funeral, a graveside service will be held on Friday morning, March 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the morning at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, W.Va., with  VFW Post # 5578, Madison, W.Va.

Elizabeth ‘Sis’ Ann Bozo Jarosz

SCARBRO — Elizabeth “Sis” Ann Bozo Jarosz, 91, of Scarbro, died on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born October 31, 1921, in Stonage, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Knausz Bozo Sr. Her childhood was spent in Beauty, Ky., and in 1935 the family moved to Scarbro.

Sis was a 1940 graduate of Oak Hill High School.

She was an employee of the Oak Hill Water Company, in 1969 received her LPN from the Raleigh County Vo-Tech and retired from Plateau Medical Center after 25 years of service.

An accomplished seamstress, her hobbies included crocheting, quilting, as well as other crafts. She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking and spending time with family.

Sis was a long-time member of the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was an active member of the Alter Society.

Before her health declined, Sis was a member of the Plateau District Quilters, the WV LPN Association, and the OHHS/CHS Alumni Association and a volunteer for Red Cross bloodmobiles, etc.

Sis was married to Leon B. Jarosz Sr. on January 29, 1944 at Scarbro. He preceded her in death as did her dear friend, James R. "Bob" Craver; four sisters, Rosalie Blanar, Margaret Dixon, Julia Bozo and Mary Bozo; and three brothers, Joseph Jr., Elic Sr. and her twin, Daniel.

Survivors include one daughter, Stephanie Graves and husband, A. Leonard III of Sugar Grove and two sons Leon Jr. and wife, JoAnn of Scarbro and Michael Sr. and wife, Debra,  all of Scarbro.

Also surviving are four grandsons, Michael Jr. of Scarbro and children, Joseph and Catherine; Stephen and wife, Amy of Scarbro and children, Catilyn and Elizabeth “Sis” Ann; Aaron Graves and wife, Evelyn of Maidsville and children, Skylar, Robbie and Presley; and Andrew Graves of Westover, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill, with Father Paul Yuenger officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Gerald Jerome Jones Sr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Gerald Jerome Jones Sr., 62, of Chesapeake, Va., formerly of Rhodell, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, following a long illness.

He was the son of the late George Wilkerson and Dorothy Wilkerson and adoptive parents, Henry and Evangelist Mary Jones.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Freeman and two brothers, George Wilkerson Jr. and Theodore Wilkerson.

Mr. Jones was a former minister of the Apostolic Faith Church in Black Eagle, W.Va. He graduated from Stoco High School. He was a former coal miner for several years. After retirement Mr. Jones relocated in Chesapeake, Va., until time of his demise. He was  loved and will be sadly missed by the family.

He leaves to cherish his memories; two sons, Gerald Jones Jr. of Beckley and Anthony Radford of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Latonia Jones of Boston, Mass.; seven brothers, Earl Jones of Roanoke, Va., Grover Napier Jones of Greenville, S.C., Gilbert Wilkerson of California, Ronald Wilkerson, Timothy Wilkerson and Richard Wilkerson, all of Norfolk, Va., Charlie Wilkerson of Maryland; four sisters, Mary Jones of New York, Evelyn Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., Gladys Bailey of Norfolk, Va. and Paula Wilkerson of Washington, D.C.; brother-in-law, Lonnie Freeman of Pearisburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Gazzmine Jones, Tajiia Hardy, Jonathan Woods, Autumn Evans, Ty’youn Whitehead and William Scott; three great-grandchildren, Aayiah, Khloe and Kaleb; one great-great-grandchild, Taylor Simone; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, march 14, 2013, at the Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, W.Va.

Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

George A. ‘Pete’ Leach

NALLEN — George A. “Pete” Leach, 63, of Nallen, formerly of Woodbridge, Va., passed away Friday, March 8, 2013.

Peggy Newman

 On Monday, March 11th, 2013, our most cherished, Peggy Newman, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital. She was in her 80th year of life.

Born on May 6th, 1932 at Eccles, Peggy Jean Daniel was the only child of the late Clifford and Tamer Almedia Peters Daniel.   

In 1940, Peggy was walking home from Mattsville Church with her mother, she was only eight years of age at the time. Russell Newman, a Sandlick boy was out and about and Peggy caught his eye. Russ asked Peggy’s mother, “for her hand in marriage.” Mrs. Daniel said, “Come back when she’s 15.” Russ and Peggy were married on Sept. 3rd, 1949. To  this union was born ten children, Robert Neal, Jerry Wayne, James Lee, Deborah Lynn, Larry Gene, Mary Carol, David Scott, Russell Claud, John Phillip, and Brian Keith.

While Russ worked hard all his life to support his family, Peggy worked hard at home being a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Peggy and Russ loved their family.

Peggy and Russ’s life has had many blessings and many difficult times, but they always held together. Robert Neal, Jerry Wayne and James Lee have passed away as adults as well as Russell Claud dying in infancy.

The blessings are great, Deborah is married to James Akers, Mary Carol is married to Ray McGrady, David is married to Hallie, John is married to Jennifer and Brian is married to Sherry.  A grandson, Michael James was raised by Peggy and Russ as if he was their own son. They were blessed as well to have 17 additional grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Six months, and seven days ago, Russell Newman passed away on Sept. 4th, 2012,  and now, “Oh Glad Reunion.”

On noon this Thursday, March 14th, there will be a committal service at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.  Family friend, Pastor Paul Lucas will be officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Melton Mortuary. Those wishing to attend the committal services are asked to meet at the mortuary by 11:30 a.m. Peggy’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

William Ashley ‘Bill’ Pack

JUMPING BRANCH — William Ashley “Bill” Pack, 89, of Jumping Branch, went home to be with the Lord and his loved ones Monday, March 11, 2013, at his residence following a long illness.

Born June 10, 1923 in Raleigh County, he was a son of the late Samuel Lee and Sarah Vest Pack and the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Bill was a member of the Bluestone Baptist Church. He was self employed, having worked in the timber, mining and trucking industry.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Ann Gwinn Pack; three brothers, Hershel, Charlie and Paul Pack; two sisters, Gracie (Sibyl) Pack Moye, Clara Hatcher and a brother in law, Grady Hatcher, who along with Clara helped to raise Bill’s only son, Michael.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Michael Lee Pack and wife Susan of MacArthur; five nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the William Vest Cemetery at Streeter. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral parlors on Wednesday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Ellen Jane ‘Janie’ Perkins

It is with much sadness that the family of Ellen Jane “Janie” Richards Perkins announces her passing. Janie died at home on Perk Farm, Frankford, W.Va., on the morning of Tuesday, March 12, 2013 as a result of pancreatic cancer.

Janie was born in East Rainelle on May 21st 1944 to Gladys Sheets Richards (now Casdorph) and the late Homer Sell Richards.

Janie started her schooling at the one-room Laurel Hill School on Brownstown Road, Renick. She was valedictorian of the last graduating class from Renick High School in 1962. Janie went on to graduate from Chesapeake and Ohio School of Nursing, Clifton Forge, Va., in 1965.

Janie worked as a registered nurse for many years and also nursed numerous family members. Her final professional role was with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, serving as a standard patient to assist the learning of future medical professionals.

Janie was also a farmer, in partnership with her husband of 47 years Harry Knight Perkins. Harry preceded her in death in 2011.

Janie is survived by her three children, son Harry (Perk) Perkins II and his fiancé Vickey Neel of Frankford and her children, Jennifer and Brianne; son Remington Perkins, his wife Mary and their five children, Lauren, Claire, Ethan, Katelyn, and Trinity of Frankford; and daughter Annie Perkins and her husband Dave Campbell of Hamilton, New Zealand. Her mother Gladys Casdorph of Ronceverte, brothers Terry Richards and his partner Marty Jepsen of Cincinnati and Stuart Richards of Renick, and sister Edna Rothwell of Morgantown also survive her.

Per her request, a memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the church to which she belonged, Henning Church of God, Vago Road, Frankford at 4 p.m. Friday, March 15th, with Pastor Robert Hefner Jr. officiating.

Friends are invited to visit with Janie’s family at the church any time after 1 p.m. on Friday or during a meal kindly provided by the church after the service.

Janie requested no flowers please, however she loved church and nature. Therefore, if desired, donations to her church are welcome or you may like to plant a tree in her honor.

Harding Dennis Richmond

Harding Dennis “Danny” Richmond, age 70 of Blue Jay, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Born on November 24, 1942 in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of JoAnna “Joan” Elmore Richmond of Blue Jay and late Harding Richmond.

“Danny” was a retired self employed plumber. He was a member of Blue Jay United Methodist Church, and had served in US Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

“Danny” had lived most of his life in the Beaver area.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Hutchinson Richmond, and his second wife Mary Etta Meadows Richmond, and also by his son Harding Dennis Richmond Jr.

Other than his mother, he is survived by a sister,  Carolyn Moran and her husband James of Blue Jay; two grandsons, Kyle Richmond and Robert Richmond, both of Seaside, NC; several nieces and nephews, and his best friend  David Lilly of Daniels also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted the Rose and Quesenberry  Peace Chapel in Beckley on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Stadelman officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Pat Acord, Sammy Acord, Manuel Ratliff, Steve Ratliff, Pat Canterbury, and J.D. Meador.

Juanita Woollard

FAYETTEVILLE — Juanita Woollard, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born on July 26, 1926 in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Norville Marion and Elizabeth Craigo Stanley.

Mrs. Woollard attended Fayetteville Baptist Church. She received her Master’s Degree from Marshall University and taught school and retired from Oak Hill High School. She was a former member of the Fayette Study Club in Oak Hill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Payton Smith; second husband, John Marra; brother, James Edward Stanley; and step-father, James Irvin Shorter.

Left to cherish her memory include her loving and devoted husband, Robert H. Woollard; children: son, Payton Daniel Smith; daughter, Linda G. Smith High and husband, David; son, Frank Marra and wife, Debbie; daughter, Rita Marra; son, James L. Marra and wife, Lorie; Robert H. Woollard II; Suzann W.
