Lena Immaculate Carrere Adkins

MCCONNELL — Lena Immaculate Carrere Adkins, 93, formerly of Dehue, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the First Baptist Church,  McConnell, with the Revd. John E. Godby, Caudle Adkins, C. J. Adkins, Mike Manuel and Donnie Wells officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Garden.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013, at the Honaker Funeral Home, Logan.

Lena has requested that in lieu of flowers or any other type of memorial items, contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church-McConnell to further the gospel of Jesus Christ.

BENTREE — Mary Ann Baker, 70, of Bentree, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Roy Lee Bishop

PRINCETON — Roy Lee Bishop, 89, of 210 Toni Lane in Princeton, formerly of Sandlick, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born July 7, 1923, in Basin, W.Va., he was the son of the late Floyd Bishop and Lillie Mae Mills Bishop.

He was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of the U.M.W.A. Roy was a devoted member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Princeton. He loved his family and enjoyed his music. He had been a resident of the Princeton area since November 1985, moving here from Stephenson, W.Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Kevin James Bishop; two brothers, James Bishop and Paul Bishop; and three sisters, Ella Mae O’Neal, Zada Shrewsbury, and Alice Bishop. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Ollie Mae Shrewsbury Bishop of Princeton; nine children, Merle Mason Bishop and wife Shirley of Summersville, WV, Earnest Marvin Bishop and wife Carol of Lerona, Melvin Halroy Bishop and wife Sherlene of Princeton, Morris Roland Bishop and wife Dianna of East Bend, NC, Willis Eugene Bishop and wife Mary of Bluefield, James Ivan Bishop and wife Jewel of Athens, Kay Broyles and husband James of Princeton, Roy Lee Bishop, Jr. and wife Linda of Charlotte, NC, and David Ray Bishop of Lerona; twenty seven grandchildren; one brother, Willie Bishop and wife Louise of Beckley; and two sisters, Mary Johnson of Stephenson, WV, and Dolly Lusk of Delaware.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, with Pastor Greg Kinzer and Pastor Marvin Mills officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Joyce Lee Tucker Farley

Joyce Lee Tucker Farley, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a short illness.

She was born April 25, 1931, in Boone, N.C., a daughter of the late Quincy and Beatrice Tucker.

Joyce lived in many areas before marrying into the Farley family and calling Rock Creek home to start her family. Besides a loving mom, for a decade before she and her husband retired, Joyce was a school teacher.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Azel Farley Jr. of Beckley; a son, Floyd Farley and wife Alta of Escondido, Calif., and a daughter, Renee Farley of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren Cara and Steven; and great grandchild Taylor.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her two brothers, James [Jay] Tucker and Edward [Bud] Tucker and in laws Louise Burnside and Adolph Farley.

She is also survived by in laws, Mildred Cantley, Ted Farley, Patsy Pettry, Peggy Rizzuto, and Jim Farley.

Service will be 12 noon Thursday,March 14, 2013, at the Rebecca Chapel at Rock Creek, with speaker Mike Kessinger. Burial will follow in the Miller Cemetery at Rock Creek.

Berman Okey Lusk

Berman Okey Lusk, 56, of Kopperston Road, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at his home, following a long illness.

He was born August 17, 1956, in Cyclone, W.Va., a son of the late Posey Berman and Waveline Gunnoe Lusk of Cyclone. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Sherry Lynn Lusk; two brothers Teddy Ray Lusk and Ellery Kent Lusk; and a sister Karen Cook.

Survivors include his loving wife Luellen “LuLu” Lusk; a daughter Jessica Lynn (Steve) Goodrich of Gilmer County, W.Va.; a son Johnny Brown of Wyoming County, W.Va.; a grandchild Traition Steven Issac Goodrich; two sisters Francis Stewart and Sharon Harrison; two brothers Teddy Gunnoe and Tommy Lusk; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, W.Va.

In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated following the services.

Eugene Lusk

BURLINGTON, N.C. —  Eugene Lusk, 88, of Burlington, formerly of Herndon, died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. 

Mr. Lusk was a native of Wyoming County, and was born January 18, 1925, to the late Linden and Lillie Farley Lusk.

He was a charter member of Bud Missionary Baptist Church, and was a retired mining administrator. Eugene Lusk was an Army veteran who landed at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, and served in France during World War II.

Eugene Lusk was married for 65 years to the recently deceased Ethel Lusk.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Linda Lusk of Basin; daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Steve Fox of Elon, N.C.; and son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Judy Lusk of Dandridge, Tenn.; granddaughter and husband, Missy and Aaron Thompson of Culloden, W.Va.; granddaughter and husband, Tonya and Richard Nkhata of Hamilton, Ohio; granddaughter and husband, Crystal and Gary Morrison of Leitchfield, Ky.; grandson Kevin Lee of Elgin, Ill.; granddaughter Jackie Weeks of Richmond, Ky.; granddaughter and husband, Kim and Shawn Miller of Harlan, Ky.; grandson and wife, Todd  and Audra Hatfield of New Orleans, La.; granddaughter Candi Hargett of Burlington, N.C.; granddaughter and husband Michelle and Mike Chisholm of Burlington, N.C. Also surviving are brothers Paul and wife Ellen Lusk; Jack and wife Orpha Lusk; sisters Wanda Goad; Naomi and husband Robert Kaufman, Carrie and husband Jessie Tolliver. Eugene and Ethel have 14 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews. Eugene was blessed with the love and support of several wonderful homecare workers, close family and friends during his dear wife’s failing health. He continued to receive their love and support after her death in November 2012 until his passing four months later.

Eugene Lusk was preceded in death by his lovely wife Ethel Rozella Lilly Lusk, brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Margaret Lusk; brother-in-law Jesse Goad, and great grandson Mason Alexandrow.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton. The funeral service will take place at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home at 12 noon. Rev. Paul Lusk and Rev. Naomi Kaufman will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, where military honors will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Lee, Richard Nkhata, Shawn Miller, Gary Morrison, Austin Miller, Mark Fox. Honorary pallbearers will be Brenden Miller and Hunter Alexandrow.

Judith Ann Bower Mann

BALLARD — Judith Ann Bower Mann, 67 of Ballard, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem, Va.

Born April 5, 1945, at Red Sulphur Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Aubrey and Florence E. Martin Bower.

Judy served as secretary for the Monroe County Schools for over 34 years.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Roy Mann, and one brother, Billy Joe Bower.

Survivors include her daughter Jennifer E. Bailey and husband Acie of Ballard; three sons, Thomas Conway Jr. and wife Donna of Hinton, Scott Conway of Hickory, NC., and Bill Conway and wife Susan of Ballard; one brother, James “Pat” Bowers and wife Connie of Red Sulphur Springs; one step son, Warren Mann of Cashmere; two step daughters, Jessica R. Williams of Hans Creek, and Paula Lane of Bozoo; 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, six step grandchildren, and one step great grandchild; one niece DeJuana Mills and one nephew, Shannon Bowers.

Harding Dennis Richmond

Harding Dennis “Danny” Richmond, age 70 of Blue Jay, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Born on November 24, 1942 in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of JoAnna “Joan” Elmore Richmond of Blue Jay and late Harding Richmond.

“Danny” was a retired self employed plumber. He was a member of Blue Jay United Methodist Church, and had served in U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

“Danny” had lived most of his life in the Beaver area.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Hutchinson Richmond, and his second wife Mary Etta Meadows Richmond, and also by his son Harding Dennis Richmond Jr.

Other than his mother, he is survived by a sister,  Carolyn Moran and her husband James of Blue Jay; two grandsons, Kyle Richmond and Robert Richmond, both of Seaside, NC; several nieces and nephews, and his best friend  David Lilly of Daniels also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted the Rose and Quesenberry  Peace Chapel in Beckley on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Stadelman officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Virginia Hanson Ridgeway

LEWISBURG — Shortly after sunset, on Saturday, March 9, our beloved Mom, Virginia Hanson Ridgeway entered into eternal peace and rest at her home on Muddy Creek Mountain in Lewisburg surrounded by her family. Mom was in her ninety-first year.

Mom married Robert Ridgeway in 1938, and they were married for 54 years before his passing in 1992. Mom was preceded to eternity by her son Bill in 1995; her parents William and Linnie Hanson; her sisters Flora Hanson and Mary Davis; her brothers Cliff and Pete Hanson and an infant brother; her granddaughters Angie and Tammy Burr; and a son-in-law Robert Martin.

Surviving are daughters Joyce Burr and husband Danny of Stanton, Ky.; Jean Martin of Lewisburg; Judy Gazaway and husband Ken of Lewisburg; and Jane of White Sulphur Spgs; sons Bobby and wife Detra of Clintonville and Steve of Lewisburg; and daughter-in-law Dorothy Ridgeway of Alexandria, Va.; 13 grandchildren call her Grand-maw- Robbie, Ronnie, William, Jenise, Sherry, Jimmy, Missy, Jackie, Bobby Jo, Jon, Rob, Chrissy, and Jennifer and 19 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and a sister Thelma Sampson of Lewisburg.

Mom loved cooking, baking, gardening, and caring for her family. She was absolutely the best at baking rolls and canning vegatables. Her vegetable garden and flower beds were a sight to behold-not a weed in sight! In the winter she loved watching the many birds at her feeders. Our lives will never be the same without her.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with Rev. Gary Waple officiating.

Burial will follow at Roach Cemetery on Muddy Creek Mountain in Lewisburg.

Grandsons will serve as casketbearers.

Marjorie ‘Marge’ Oiler Simms

OAK HILL — Marjorie “Marge” Oiler Simms , 85, of Oak Hill, died on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at her home.

Born January 8, 1928, at Marting Mountain, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Albert and Rose Ellen Crump Oiler.

Mrs. Simms was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed league bowling at White Oak Lanes and was a member of the PMC Senior Circle. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Cornelius Houston “Connie” Simms; brothers, Arnold, Harold, Vernon, James, Max, William and Robert Oiler; sisters, Dorothy Meadows and Virginia Oiliver and a grandson, Brandon Levi Simms preceded her in death.

Survivors include eight sons, Larry Simms and wife, Carol of Gatewood, Jimmy Simms and wife, Ann of Hartville, OH, Roger Simms and wife, Carolyn of Whiteland, IN, Timmy Simms of Beckley, Michael Simms and wife, Karen of Plum Orchard, Connie Mack Simms and wife, Jennie of Oak Hill, Paul Dean Simms and wife, Bernie of Dale City, VA and Bruce Simms and wife, Jennifer of Oak Hill; four daughters, Lois O’Daniels of Wilmington, NC, Trenia Christianson of Seattle, WA, Vicki Maynard and husband, Randy of China and Madge Hamilton of Columbus, OH; and three sisters, Margaret Brown, Suzy West and Phyllis Myers.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Leah Ison, Bryan O’Daniels, Jennifer McCarraher, Greg Simms, Nicholas Simms, Joshua Simms, Jonah Simms, Leslie Simms, Brittany Simms, Jeremy Simms, Shannon Simms, Tiffany Simms, Heather Elder, Stacey Scarbro, Garrett Christianson, Sutton Christianson, Blake Christianson, Lauren Hamilton, Paul Simms, Patrick Simms, John Simms, Joseph Simms, Taylor Maynard, Olivia Maynard, Spencer Maynard and Chloe Maynard and great grandchildren, Logan Shipman, Ellie Shipman, Seth McCarraher, Micah McCarraher, Hunter Simms, Chase Simms, Carter Simms, Tyson Simms, Morgan Simms, Owen Simms, Jacob Simms, Jed Simms, Jack Simms, Brynnlee Jackson, Mattie Scarbro, Cole Elder, Kaylie Koch, Talan Elder, Bradey Christianson and two grandchildren expected within two months and two special nieces, Saundra Tucker and Yvonne Pacella.
