Mary Bolen

Mary Bolen, 80, of Princewick, went home to be with her Lord, on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in the Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.

Born December 13, 1932, in Ellison, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Winnie Bolen Farley.

Mary loved cooking, being with her family, but she dearly loved the Lord; she attended Cale’s Chapel in Coal City, and the Beckley Church of God. For the past four years she had been a resident of Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation in Beckley.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Gene Bolen, her children Mary Mageline Bolen, Johnny Edward Bolen, Gladie Marie Hylton, Glennis Eugene Bolen; eight brothers Clinton, Eugene, Denny, Walter, Thomas and Gene Autry Farley, and Raymond and Jennings Hall; four sisters Elizabeth Bolen, Betty Lou Worley, Garnet and Marie Jennings.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sharon Linville of Beckley; two grandchildren, Roger McAlpine of Beckley, and Sheri Hendricks of Beckley; and five great-grandchildren Brandi McAlpine, Haileigh McAlpine, Ethan Hendricks, Elijah Hendricks, and Evan Hendricks; her sisters Nellie Mullens, and Emma McBride, and her brother Junior Farley, and a host of nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

Services for Mary will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Hagee officiating. Burial will follow in the Thompson Cemetery, Coal City.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

Ira Bowling Cooper

RONCEVERTE — Ira Bowling Cooper, 70, of Ronceverte, formerly of Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea.

Born July 30, 1942, in Fayette County, he was the son of Edna Cooper.

Ira retired from The Greenbrier hotel where he worked as a dish washer. He loved to hunt and fish and was a great dad and wonderful grandfather.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his first wife Joyce Cooper; his second wife Sharon Cooper; one sister Odessa Cooper and one grandson Travis Bennett.

Survivors include two sons Marcus King and wife Brenda of Alderson and Tony McMackin; two daughters Stephanie Fink and husband Charles of Ronceverte and Janice Reynolds and husband Jerry of Rainelle; two brothers John Henry Cooper and Travis Cooper, both of Alderson; and four grandchildren Mitzi Reynolds, Nicole Fink, David Bennett and Allissa King.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Smathers Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Addwell Cemetery in Ronceverte.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carolyn Jean ‘Carol’ Genge

Carolyn Jean “Carol” Genge, age 62, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital, in Beckley.

Born on September 17, 1950, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Thelma Thompson Brogan of Beaver and the late Homer Brogan.

Carol was a former employee of Rick’s Fried Chicken and Robin’s Family Restaurant as a waitress.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Brogan, a sister Sue Richmond.

Other than her mother Carol is survived by her children, Chris Genge and his wife Megan of Cool Ridge, and Kimberly Stump and her husband Eric of Ghent. A sister, Sharon Dodd and her husband Don of Beaver; five grandchildren, Jonas and Ben Genge, Karsten, Braydon, and Kadence Stump. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A Memorial Service will be conducted to Celebrate The Life of Carol Genge on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Shady Spring, with Rev. Mike Vernatt II officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until service time on Sunday.

Mrs. Rosa Harvey, 91, of Beckley, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013.

Funeral service will be noon Monday, March 11, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark, with Pastor John Lambert and the Rev. Donald Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Nellie Virginia Martin Hoke

HOLLYWOOD — Nellie Virginia Martin Hoke, 86, of Hollywood, passed away Sunday evening, March 3, 2013, at her home, following a extended illness.

Mrs. Hoke was born on June 11, 1926, at Rock Camp, W.Va., the oldest daughter of the late Theodore and Nellie Mae McMahan Martin.

She was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed cooking, canning, quilting, sewing and cracking walnuts. She loved flowers and working in her vegetable garden. Every fall she looked forward to entering her vegetables and fruits in the Harvest Festival and was very proud of the many blue ribbons that she won.

She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy in life  was spending time with her family. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Monroe Hoke, in 2012; one brother, Ernest Martin of Zenith; two sisters, Velvia Little of Indiana and Sylvia Martin of Alliance, Ohio; also three grandsons, Matthew Hoke, Billy Hoke Jr. and Jason Hoke.

Surviving are seven sons, Clayton Hoke and wife, Emma, James Hoke and wife, Jeannie, Donnie Hoke and wife, Cathy, Billy Hoke and wife, Cathy, Ernie Hoke and wife, Dawn, David Hoke and Marvin Hoke; a daughter, Nancy Boggs and husband, Wayne, all of Hollywood; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; a sister, Pauline Hoke of Hollywood; and a brother, Charles Martin of Draper, Va.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, with Revs. Otis Lewis and Charles Feury officiating. Burial will follow in the Vance Cemetery at Hollywood.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Groves Funeral Home in Union prior to the service.

Groves Funeral Home in Union is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Persinger

RAINELLE — Jack Persinger, 63, of Rainelle, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, March 5, 2013.

Born July 22, 1949, at Lansing, WV, he was the son of the late James Henry and Sarah Arbelle Midkiff Persinger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Bacvar, and brother, James Persinger.

Jack was a born-again Christian and was a member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church of Rainelle.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Arbutus Bryant Persinger of Rainelle; daughter, Patricia Morgan and husband Shannon of Anchorage, AK; four grandsons, Adam, Shawn, Timothy, and Matthew Morgan, all of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Lou Checko of Orchard Park, NY, and Helen Bell and husband Don of Hamburg, NY; one brother, Lee Persinger and wife Lucy of Rainelle.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at Sewell Valley Baptist Church of Rainelle, with Pastor Fred Fryar officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle.

MOUNT HOPE — Mrs. Elizabeth “Miss Liz” Smith, 90, of Mt. Hope, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013.

Born December 9, 1922, in Greentown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Evelyn Burks.

Mrs. Smith was a retired business owner and member of New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Smith, and son, Lawrence H. “Pokie” Bradley Sr.

Left to cherish precious memories are her daughter, Marilyn A. (Floyd) Washington of Brandywine, MD; brother, James (Sarah) Lang of Columbus, GA; sisters, Charlotte (Cuzel) Menefee of Seat Pleasant, MD, Catherine Ward and Margaret Graves of Page, WV, and Annie (John) Conliffe of Detroit, MI; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
