James Dillard ‘JD’ Banther Jr.

LYNCO — James Dillard “JD” Banther Jr., 74, of Lynco, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.

Jerry Boshell

BELLEVIEW, Fla. — Jerry Boshell, 85, of Belleview, formerly of Kopperston, W.Va., died Saturday, October 6, 2012.

Jerry was the daughter of the late Montgomery and Minnie Manning.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Bill Boshell, and four brothers, Keith, Buddy, Dolin and Bill.

Jerry is survived by one brother, Dallas (Juanita) of Ozark, Mo.; three sons, Michael (Linda) of Kenova, W.Va., Mark of Orlando, Fla., and Jay of Belleview, Fla.; two grandsons, Mic (Kristi) of Kenova, and Hunter of Huntington, W.Va., and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Mikayla of Kenova.

She will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Beckley, by Pastor Jim Richards.

Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova is assisting the family.



Carl ‘Mel’ Cernuto

Carl “Mel” Cernuto, 73, of Crab Orchard, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.

Mel’s going home celebration will be at noon Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Walter Leach officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Last Supper Garden, in Prosperity. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home.

Jerry W. ‘J.J.’ Cook Jr.

HINTON — Jerry W. “J.J.” Cook Jr., 36, of Hinton, formerly of Christiansburg, VA, entered into eternal rest Thursday, October 11, 2012.

Born June 15, 1976, at Christiansburg, VA, he was a son of Jerry W. Sr. and Debra Wood Cook of Christiansburg, VA.

He was a 1994 graduate of Christiansburg High School. J.J. was currently a CCT Paramedic for Summers Co. EMS in Hinton, WV; having been employed with Acadia Ambulance Service, Beaumont, TX, Louisiana EMS, Richmond Ambulance Authority, as well as volunteering with Blacksburg V.F.D. and Cave Spring V.F.D. He was an avid Virginia Tech fan, who loved motorcycle riding, fishing, life, alligator hunting, cooking, playing musical instruments and spending time with his parents.

Preceding him in death include his paternal grandfather, Quinter A. Cook Sr.; maternal grandfather, Fred J. Wood; and his uncle, James C. Tallant Sr.

Besides his parents, those left to cherish his memory include one sister, Ariel Cook; paternal grandmother, Louise Cook; maternal grandmother, Shelby Wood; aunts and uncles, Karen Wood Smith and husband Greg, Sandy Wood O’Berry and husband Grant, Ron Wood, Quinter A. Cook Jr. and wife Vickie, Linda Cook Tallant, Karen Cook Linkous and husband Timmie, Larry Cook and wife Kathy, Donna Cook and Chip Bryant, Darryl Cook and wife Veronica; extended family that he viewed as his brothers, Josh Jakupczyk, Zaid Ahmed, Mike Connell, Greg Connell, Steve Peto, and his EMS Families; a very special friend Ray Crewey, and the Summers County WV Emergency Medical Service. Numerous cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Harvest Baptist Church in Blacksburg, VA, with Pastor Gene Ziesel and Chaplain Mike Jarrett officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg, VA.

Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton, WV, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and at the Harvest Baptist Church, in Blacksburg, VA, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

J.J. will be honored with full EMS services and the Summers Co. EMS Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Summers Co. EMS, P.O. Box 91, Pipestem, WV 25979.

Linda Lou Crouch

Linda Lou Crouch, 66, of Beckley passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Born October 14, 1945, at Eccles, she was a daughter of the late Basil and Lettie Stewart Williams.

Linda loved to go shopping, going to lunch with her sisters, and spending time with her grandchildren, but most of all she loved the Lord.

She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She retired from Woodrow Wilson High School as a custodian following 34 years of dedicated service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Ann Crouch, and a brother, Ralph Williams.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Carlos Crouch of Beckley; daughter, Vicky Toney and husband, Ken, of Mechanicsville, VA; daughter, Missy Crouch of Beckley; son, Jeff Crouch and wife, Heather, of Shady Spring; daughter, Kelly Elkins and husband, Rodney, of Beckley; son, Bill Crouch of Beckley; an inherited child her granddaughter, Ashley Sanchez and husband, Estevan, of Hilltop; grandchildren, Seth Toney, Sara Toney, Allison Reid, Emily Crouch, Haley Elkins, Elija Lively, Michael Crouch, and Bella Crouch; four sisters, Margaret Roop, Nancy Crowder, Betty Goad, and Peggy Venable; and two half-sisters, Lisa Williams-Felice and Cathy Williams.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Charles Bright officiating. Following the services, Linda will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge  Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Danny Dunbar

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — Danny Dunbar, age 49, of Dandridge, born Oct. 30, 1962, in Beckley, WV, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012. Danny was employed by Blalock’s Construction as a professional driver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Dunbar.

Survivors include his wife, Lucretia Ann Dunbar of Dandridge, TN; son, Daniel Ray Dunbar of Jefferson City, TN; mother, Zaney Dunbar of Dandridge, TN; sister, Shirley and Jeremy McClung of Columbus, OH.

The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Rev. Lee Dunbar officiating. Interment will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens with Rev. Ronnie Reagan and Rev. Lee Dunbar officiating.

Sarah Jean Ellis

SINKS GROVE — Sarah Jean Ellis, 78, of Sinks Grove, WV, passed away Friday evening, October 12, 2012, at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia, following a sudden illness.

Mrs. Ellis was born at Second Creek, WV, December 27, 1933, a daughter of the late Paul and Flora M. Reed Nichols.

She was a retired Civil Service employee, having last worked at the Farmers Home Administration Lewisburg; a member of the Union Lions Club, Treasurer for the CEOS Club, served on the board for CASE, active with the Monroe Country Historical Society and she was a member of the Union United Methodist Church at Union.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Joe Nichols.

Surviving are her husband, Howard L. (Sonny) Ellis of Sinks Grove; 3 daughters, Lisa Hart and husband, Steve, of Frankfort, Ky., Rosemary Ellis of Blacksburg, Va., and Brenda Walton and husband, Marco, of Raleigh, NC; 3 sisters, Shirley Bruce of Hampton, Va., Katherine Reed and husband, Joe, of Second Creek, Sharon Trent and husband, Donald, of Second Creek; 8 grandchildren, Devin Coon, Jake Hart, Jacque Keough and husband, Bradley, Luke Hart, Jordan Ellis, Lauren Bright and husband, Casey, Ashton and Alex Walton; 3 great-grandchildren, Lucy and James Keough and Mayzie Coon; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Ellis of Roanoke, Va.; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Union United Methodist Church in Union with the Rev. Walter Ellison and Rev. Donald Trent officiating.

Burial will follow in the New Lebanon cemetery at Pickaway.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Goldie P. Jeffries

OAK HILL — Goldie P. Jeffries, 86, of Oak Hill passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born March 19, 1926, the daughter of the late Gordan Redden and Verlie Angle Redden.

Goldie was a laundress at Pinecrest Sanatorium.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Jeffries; son Marty L. Jeffries; beloved nephew Steve Jeffries; four brothers Russell Redden, Houston Redden, Gordan Redden, and Nathanial Redden; and two sisters Fannie Jeffries and June Martin.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons Robert R. Jeffries and his wife Judy, Russell A. Jeffries and his wife Louise; one sister Elizabeth Thompson; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, WV 25901, where visitation was 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and the funeral will be held 12 noon today with Rev. Joann Treadway officiating.

Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Great-grandsons will be pallbearers.

Lawrence Kessler

YAKIMA, Wash. — Lawrence “Stan” Kessler, 72, of Yakima, WA, died Monday, October 8, 2012.

He was the son of the late John B. Kessler and Minnie Mae Kessler of Hico, WV.

Stan lived in the Yakima Valley for more than 33 years. He worked as a mechanic and carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Kessler of Yakima, WA; two sons: Kenneth Kessler of Yakima, WA, Donald Kessler of Selah, WA; two brothers: Thomas E. Kessler (Linda) of Fayetteville, W.Va., John Kessler (Pat) of Atlanta, GA; and sister Shirley Keffer (Jimmy) of Baltimore, MD; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment was held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, in Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima, WA.

Earl Jackson ‘Jack’ Legg

MOUNT LOOKOUT — Earl Jackson “Jack” Legg, 77, of Mt. Lookout, WV, went to be with the Lord October 11, 2012, at CAMC General Hospital after a short illness.

Born February 6, 1935, at Leslie, WV, he was the son of the late William E. and Hattie Dietz Legg.

He was also preceded in death by his grandson Bradley Legg, granddaughter, Janiece Legg, sister Yvonne Hurst and a special sister-in-law Jewell Johnson.

A longtime resident of Mt. Lookout, he was a retired surface mine superintendent and a well-known farmer. He was a member of the American Red Poll Association, Director for the Blue Ridge Red Poll Association and a volunteer Safety Director for the Nicholas County Fair. He was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Jack was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to travel to Maine and Alaska.

Survived by his wife Helen who was his high school sweetheart and best friend for a blessed 58 years. His sons, Bill and Cindy Legg of Grandview, George and Janet Legg and Randy and Kelly Legg, all of Mt. Lookout; one brother, Billy Legg of Meadow Bridge, and two half sisters, Bonnie Groves and Anna Faye McClung, both of Rockville, MD; five grandchildren, Randall (Cassie) Legg, Jordan (Elizabeth) Legg, Dustin Legg, Jonathan Legg and Makala Legg; great-granddaughter, Millie Legg, and five stepgrandchildren, Mary Kate Estep, Aaron Hall, Lane Lilly, Brandon Lilly and Ric’Kell Lilly; adopted son and daughter Dewayne and Pam Tacy and special friend Jamie Amick.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Pool, with the Rev. Doug Beam officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery at Mt. Lookout.
