George William ‘Will’ Benfield

George William “Will” Benfield, 82, of Sophia, went home to be with the Lord on  Friday, October 12, 2012.

Born June 16, 1930 at Pyatt, NC, to the late Justin and Maybelle Benfield.

He lived and worked in the Sophia area for 64 years. He was a retired coal miner following 42 years of dedicated service, an active member of the Sophia First Baptist Church, he had served as a City Councilman for the town of Sophia for three terms. He loved his family, his church and his friends. He loved fishing and was an avid reader.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Benfield was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Glen, and Clay Benfield.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 63 years, Blanch, together they had three children, Dan W. Benfield and wife, Pam of Easley, SC; daughters, Carol Walls and husband, Lorin of Sophia and Kathy Lough and husband, Bernard of Meadow Bridge; grandsons, Eric Benfield of Easley, SC, Brandon Walls and wife, Kristen of Crab Orchard, Justin Lough and wife, Norah of Plainfield, IN, and Adam Lough USMC of Fort Meade, Maryland; granddaughters, Lori Burgess and husband, John of Chilhowie, VA and Heather Stallard and husband, Grant of Easley, SC; great-grandchildren, Presley Walls, Drake Lough, Jude Lough, Savannah Benfield, Tucker Burgess,  and Jax Stallard;  and two sisters, Christine Self and Lucille Calloway.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 15, 2012 at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia with Pastor Charlie Gilbert officiating.  Following the services, Mr. Benfield will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 12 p.m. until time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
