Charles K. ‘Chuck’ Toombs

OAK HILL — Charles K. "Chuck" Toombs, 82, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012, from a sudden illness, at C.A.M.C. Memorial Hospital.

Born July 15, 1930, the son of the late Ryland Toombs and Agnes Bowyer Toombs.

Charles was known by his friends as Chuck, and also by his family and early childhood friends by the nickname of Jerry. At the age of seventeen Chuck became the youngest person in the state to receive his pilots license, he graduated from Beckley College and was a pilot and an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force. While at Andrews Air Force Base he helped with the landing and take offs of several U.S. Presidents planes. Chuck truly loved being a pilot and working in the air traffic industry, he retired from Yeager Airport in Charleston, with 29 years as an Air Traffic Controller. Chuck was the developer and owner of the Hill’n Dale Estates mobile home court. Chuck and his wife Barbara attended the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 17 years Barbara Hickman-Toombs of Oak Hill, daughters Kaye Woodrum-Robertson and spouse Patrick of Roanoke, VA, Kathy Hickman-James and spouse Mark of Hurricane WV, a sister Betty Toombs Hiser of Newark, Ohio, a brother Tom Toombs of Oak Hill, Grandchildren Darrin Woodrum, Novella Thompson, Josh and Justin James, Shelly Street, and Reece and Tori James, and three nieces and one nephew.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (today) with Rev. David Edwards and Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.
