Carol Sue Bailey

Carol Sue Bailey, 66, of Fairdale, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 9, 2011.

Born May 1, 1945, she is the daughter of the late Fletcher and Jesse Owens Smith.

Carol enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, and was an avid doll collector. She loved taking care of her home and family and enjoyed shopping. Carol was a member of the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her two brothers, Howard Smith and Charles Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 48 years, Donald G. Bailey of Fairdale; sons Donald G. Bailey Jr. and wife Renee of Troutman, N.C. and Michael Bailey of Bolt, W.Va.; grandchildren Nicholas Bailey and Matthew Bailey; sisters Barbara Wright of Bolt, Betty Paynter of Columbus, Ohio; brothers Fletcher Smith Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., Bud Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; also a host of family and friends.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Randall Pugh officiating. Entombment will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Kevin G. Brown

CYCLONE — Kevin G. Brown, 44, departed this life Monday, August 8, 2011, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center following a long illness.

Born June 2, 1967, he was the son of the Charles W. Brown and Dorothy Jane Overton.

Kevin was a 1985 graduate of Oceana High School, enjoyed wresting, going to concerts and movies, loved cats and going to Myrtle Beach.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Van Brown.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother and step father, Dorothy and James Overton of Cyclone; a brother, Timothy Brown and his wife, Suzann of Oceana; a sister, Tina Smith and husband, Sid of Belfry, Ky.; two step sisters, Renee Runyon and husband, Bill of Cyclone and Kim Overton of Princeton; his companion, Melissa Spears of Bluefield; nephew, Jason Brown and wife, Kendra; four nieces, Megan Brown, Christa Brown, Kayla Brown and Caitlyn Smith; three grand nephews, Parker and Aiden Brown and Jaxon Walls; and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Merle Walls officiating. Kevin will be laid to rest in Harless Cemetery, at Cyclone.

James Edward Cales

 HINTON — James Edward “Tinker” Cales, 70, of 274 Main St., Hinton, died Tuesday August 9, 2011, in the VA Medical Center in Beckley following a long illness.

Born July 28, 1941, in Hinton, he was the son of the late George Edward and Julia Honaker Cales.

Mr. Cales was a graduate of Hinton High School and was a former salesman for Bluefield Distributing Company. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Hinton and a member of the Men’s Bible Class at the church. He was a former member of the Hinton Jaycees, the Hinton Fire Department and also was a former 4-H Leader. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had lived most of his life in Hinton.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Cales.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sandra Willey Cales; one son, J.C. Cales and wife Michelle of Hinton; four grandchildren; Melanie Cales, Joel Cales, Joseph Nelson and Sonnet Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2011, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Robbie Merritt and Rev. Robert Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mrs. Elsie D. Parker DeBerry, 92, of Columbus, formerly of Beckley, died August 4, 2011.

Marguerite Kathleen ‘Kitty’ Dingess

Marguerite Kathleen McDowell Dingess (Kitty), 91, of Beckley, formerly of St. Albans, died on August 2, 2011.

Kitty was born on May 14, 1920, in Monroe County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Charles Leonard and Hattie Lillis Price McDowell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Dingess (Woody), her brothers: John Robert McDowell, Lewis Gray McDowell, James Richard McDowell, Charles Price McDowell, and by her sisters: Virginia Ruth Cook, Mildred Lucille Farris, Ethel Louise McDaniel, and sister-in-law, Virginia Christine McDowell.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Dingess Potter, son-in-law, T. Bradley Potter of Naples, Fla., son, Gary W. Dingess, daughter-in-law, Nancy Shoemaker Dingess of Beckley, two grandsons: Tyler Wilson Potter and wife Nola Woods Potter of Benicia, Calif., Brook Williams Potter of Boston, Mass., two great-grandchildren: Kathleen Marie Potter and William Joseph Potter of Benicia, Calif., and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Kitty graduated from Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte, W.Va., and the Garnet LPN Nursing Program in Charleston. She was a pediatric nurse at CAMC Memorial Division and lovingly known as the “Hospital Granny.” Kitty was a faithful parishioner at Maranatha Fellowship and active in many ministries, especially prayer and “love.”

Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2011, at Casdorph and Curry Funeral Home, 110 B Street, St. Albans, W.Va. Funeral Services will be noon on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Maranatha Fellowship Church, 2910 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans, with Pastor James R. Wright Jr. officiating, along with Pastor Terry Hogue and Pastor Jamie Wright. There will also be a one hour visitation before the service at the church. Graveside services will follow at 4:30 p.m., Salem Cemetery, Salem Presbyterian Church, Organ Cave, W.Va.

Barbara Christine Webb Hall

GLEN ROGERS — Barbara Christine Webb Hall, 79, of Glen Rogers, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born April 19, 1932, in Wyoming County, she was the daughter of Pug and Maggie Honaker Webb.

Barbara was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, Ravencliff. She enjoyed shopping, gospel music, going to church and being with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert Holmes Hall on Oct. 7, 2001, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include six sons, Chucky Hall and his wife, Annie, of Ravencliff, Harold Hall and his wife, Claudette, of Glen Rogers, Randy Hall and his wife, Patty, of Glen Rogers, Todd Hall of Glen Rogers, Mark Hall of Glen Rogers and Thomas Hall of Dunbar; three daughters, Sandra Fortner and her husband, Johnny, of Ravencliff, Pat Shumate and her husband, Tom, of Ravencliff and Wanda Cozort of Glen Rogers; two sisters, Orfa Webb of Beckley and Lynn Lafferty of Fairdale; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at Pine Grove Baptist Church, Ravencliff, with the Rev. Dewayne Hurd officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ravencliff.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Margarette Jean Hank

HINTON — Margarette Jean Hank, 82, of 306 16th Ave., Hinton, died Tuesday August 9, 2011, in Summers County A.R.H. in Hinton following a short illness.

Born January 29, 1929, at Meadow Creek, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Coleman and Esta Gwinn Hank.

Jean was formerly employed at the Woodrum Store at Nimitz, and also worked for the C&O Railway Company in Hinton as a clerk and as secretary at the former Western Auto Store in Hinton. Recently, she volunteered at Loaves & Fishes in Hinton. She was a lifelong resident of Summers County and attended Riverview Chapel Church in Hinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include a brother, William J. (Bill) Hank and wife Marg of Hinton and a sister, Beulah F. Leslie of Hinton. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday August 12, 2011 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Mark Brandon, Derrick Leslie and Avi Bastajian officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton.

Leslie Alvin McBride

TALCOTT — Leslie Alvin “Duckegg” McBride, 75 of Talcott, entered into the gates of Heaven on Monday August 8, 2011, at 5:10 p.m. at his home surrounded by his family.

Born June 7, 1936, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Oscar Eldridge and Thelma Grimmett McBride.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rufus McBride and Ezra McBride.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Bonnie Richmond McBride; two daughters, Judy Summers and husband Terry of Talcott, W.Va. and Pam McBride, who resided with her parents; one son, Leslie Oscar McBride and wife Melissa of Hiddenite, N.C.; five grandchildren: Corey Summers, based in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Christopher Summers and Amber Wickline, both of Talcott, Michael McBride and Tanner McBride, both of Hiddenite, N.C.; one very special sister-in-law, Mamie Adkins and very special niece, Glenna Cook. Special nurse, Kathy McHenry. Three brothers, Roy McBride of Front Royal, Va., and Ernest and Eldridge McBride, both of Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Mary Meadows of Brooks, and Irene Adkins and Juanita Whitten, both of Hinton, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Eddie Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Upland Cemetery near Hinton.

David Edward Morgan

David Edward Morgan, age 90 of Shady Spring, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness.

Born on April 7, 1921, at Oceana, W.Va., he was the son of the late Pleasant Morgan and Annie Brunty Morgan.

Mr. Morgan was a retired railroad employee, and was a former coal miner. He was a member of the UMWA and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Stanaford Acres. Mr. Morgan was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Pauline Morgan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: David Joe Morgan and his wife Bobbie Ann of Oakman, Ala., Carol Sue Upton and her husband Ronnie of Shady Spring, Edward Larry Morgan and his wife Berniadean of Hickory, N.C., Charles Ray Morgan and his wife Dreama of Valdese, N.C., Tamela Pittman and her husband David of Shady Spring; 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren are also among his survivors.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday August 12, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. with Bishop Robert Doolittle as the Speaker. Burial will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens at Pecks Mill, W.Va.

Shawn Adam Neal

VICTOR — Shawn Adam Neal, 23, of Hopewell Road, Victor, went home to be with his Lord, Tuesday, August 9, 2011 following a fatal car accident.

Shawn was born April 22, 1988, in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of Steve Allen Neal and Susan Kay Stone Neal of Hopewell Road in Victor.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Kenneth Stone and his paternal grandparents, Iva Taylor Neal and William Neal.

He graduated from New Life Christian Academy in Summersville, a member of Hopewell Baptist Church of Hopewell Road and an associate of Wal-Mart in Fayetteville

Survivors, other than his parents, Steve and Susan; are his brothers, Steve Neal of Oak Hill, Scott Neal of Hico and Shannon Neal of Victor; maternal grandmother, Pauline Stone of Victor and a host of family members and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2011, at Hopewell Baptist Church of Hopewell Road, Victor, with Rev. Stephen Fridenmaker officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Ralph C. Rakes

OAK HILL — Ralph Clyde Rakes, 74, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill.

Born on February 15, 1937, at Callaway, W.Va., he was the son of the late Noah Austin Rakes Sr. and Grace Augusta Hinchee Rakes.

Mr. Rakes was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Oak Hill.  He was a retired brick mason with Treadway Construction.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Rakes in 2008; stepdaughter, Beverly Learmonth; two brothers, Noah Rakes Jr. and Billy Richard Rakes; and nephew, Billy Richard Rakes Jr.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Oak Hill; sister-in-law, Juanita Rakes of Oak Hill; two nieces, Gayle Humphrey of Oak Hill and Lorena Lanham of Rainelle; six nephews, David Rakes of Oak Hill, Duane Rakes of Beckwith, Mark Rakes of Oak Hill, Darrell Rakes of Oak Hill, Fred Rakes of Atlanta, Ga., and James Smith of Oak Hill; and a host of other family and friends.

LEWISBURG  — Marguerite Rose Sheets, 83, of Lewisburg, passed away Aug. 9, 2011, at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea.

Born Sept. 14, 1927, in Marfrance, W.Va., to the late Roy Clayton and Nellie Virginia Jenkins Wickline.

Marguerite was a member of the Edgewood Presbyterian Church and was retired from Pioneer Drug Store.

Other than her parents she was preceded by her husband, Walter J. Sheets; sisters, Arlene Burgess and Alma Arthur; brothers, Roy C. Wickline Jr. and Harold Wickline.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Sheets Napier of Lewisburg; sons, Donald E. Sheets and wife, Phyllis of Lewisburg and Mack M. Sheets and wife, Sheildia Jane of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Dana Renick, Paul Napier, Debbie Broce, Michael Sheets, Chad Sheets, Angie Martin and Dee Dee Laxton; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granchild; sisters, Wanda Johnson of Portsmouth, Ohio and Juanita Hamilton of Portsmouth, Ohio; a brother, Emory C. LEWISBURG — Dr. Dennis Martin Small, 64, of Lewisburg, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.

Maxey Ann Tully

Maxey Ann Van den Heurk Tully, 86, died August 4, 2011, in Summersville. Her death followed a valiant struggle to recover from a fall complicated by a traumatic brain injury.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Tully was the daughter of Carl Leo and Hattie Greene Van den Heurk.

She graduated from Montgomery High School and attended college at West Virginia Institute of Technology. 

Mrs. Tully’s bright mind, vitality, thoughtfulness and generous spirit were present until her passing. She spent her leisure time gardening, painting, reading, traveling and playing bridge. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. Tully remained active at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, the Summersville book club,  the Red Hat Society, the Silver Sneakers, and the Summersville Senior Center. Her interests also focused on philanthropic, educational, and political issues.

Mrs. Tully was preceded in death by her husband the late J. M. “Jack” Tully.

She is survived by her five children: Ann P. Tully of Woodhaven, Mich., Tandy T. Shields of Christiansburg, Va., Karen Tully of Portland, Oreg., and sons John M. Tully Jr. and Lawrence V. Tully, both of Summersville, W.Va. She leaves behind a legacy of 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Summersville Ministerial Association Food Pantry, P.O. Box 930, Summersville, WV 26651.

A celebration of Mrs. Tully’s life will be held at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, McKees Creek Road, Summersville, on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. Priests from the New River Episcopal Ministry Team will officiate. The family will greet friends at home following the service.

Donald Joe Woolwine

HUNTINGTON — Donald Joe Woolwine, 60, of Huntington, passed away August 9, 2011 at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

He was born May 2, 1951 in Mullens, W.Va., a son of the late Charles and Hazel Linkous Woolwine.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters: Ruby Woolwine and Lois Graham.

 Surviving are his wife Debra Lusk Woolwine; sons, Andrew and Tyler; two brothers, Jerry Woolwine of Huntington, W.Va. and Malcolm and Lois Woolwine of Blacksburg, Va., and two sisters Louise McClure of Lakewood, Ohio and Dorthina and Ronald Samples of Oceana, W.Va.

A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Rev. Steve Grimes.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Thursday until service time.
