George Edward Berry

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — George Edward Berry, 66, of Christiansburg, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George A. Berry and Edith Marie Cox Berry; his wife, Frances Shumaker Berry; and two brothers, David Berry and Charles Berry.

He is survived by his daughters, Melissa Pettry (Johnny) of Jumping Branch, W.Va., Shawnee Woolwine of Christiansburg and Cynthia Bowman (Larry) of Christiansburg; sons, Thomas Berry of Fries, Va., and James (Mandy) Berry of Christiansburg; numerous grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva Smith, Sandra Quesenberry, Brenda Ball and Debra Turpin; as well as two special friends, Pamela Nester and Angel Bryan.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home.

There will be a private interment at a later date.

Jack E. Davis

Jack E. Davis, 84, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013.

Born March 13, 1929, in Roderfield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Raymond and Hessie Davis.

Jack was former foreman for Eastern Coal and maintenance foreman for Peabody Coal. While living in Oceana Jack was an advocate for local sports, coaching youth baseball and refereeing high school sports. He enjoyed playing tennis and spending winters at his condominium in Florida. Jack was an avid WVU Mountaineer football fan, a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge and UMWA. He loved his poodles, Prissy 1, Prissy 2 and Joey. Jack attended the First Baptist Church, Beckley.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Griffith Davis; son, Douglas Davis and wife Kathy of Goode, Va.; daughter Jackie Davis of Attleboro, Mass.; grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Heather, Sarah and Josh; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Faye Jackson of Beckley and Jean Duncan of Atlanta, Ga.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013, in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B with Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Wednesday at the cemetery.

Dave C. Dickens

Dave C. Dickens of Beckley, formerly of Naoma, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 7, 2013.

He was born February 26, 1926, in Montcoal, W.Va., to the late Briston and Sarah Pettry Dickens.

Dave was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army. He was retired from the VA Hospital.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Beckley.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Ivory Mae.

Dave is survived by numerous relatives.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B, with Laura Fygetakes officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the cemetery.

Mary Katrine Brown Roy

RACINE — Mary Katrine (Brown) Roy of Racine passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013, following a brief illness.

The daughter of the late Joseph Shaw Brown and Laura Dagley Brown, Mary Katrine was born March 22, 1922, in Elsacoal, Ky.

She graduated from Sherman High School, Class of 1940, where she was the first Miss Sherman. She returned to Sherman to begin her teaching career of over 30 years following her graduation from East Tennessee State Teacher’s College in 1944.

Mary Katrine was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lyle Eugene Roy, as well as a brother, Richard Dean Brown, and sister, Anna Mae Brown Shriver.

Mrs. Roy is survived by her son Richard Maurice Roy and wife, Suzie; her daughter, Roena Roy Barbre and husband Marvin, as well as seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nephew, Bruce Shriver.

Mrs. Roy was an active member of Order of Eastern Star, Whitesville and Chelyan Chapters, serving as Worthy Matron as well as Grand Organist for West Virginia Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She served on the Boone County Public Service Board, maintained membership in the East Tennessee State Alumni Association, Racine CEOS, and Boone County Retired Teachers’ Association. Much of her life was dedicated to service at Racine First Baptist Church where she served in many capacities over the years: as choir director and the church’s only organist, Sunday School teacher of the Pioneer class, president of the American Baptist Women and Leota Campbell Circle, president of the Coal River Baptist Association of American Baptist Women.

A celebration of Mary Katrine’s life will be conducted at Racine First Baptist Church on Thursday, December 12, at 1 o’clock. The service will be conducted by her son-in-law, Dr. Marvin Barbre, and Rev. Anthony Pratt. Interment will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the sanctuary of Racine First Baptist Church and one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank all those who enabled us to keep Mother in her home, especially Martha Burke and Donna Moore.

Harry Smith Jr.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Harry Smith Jr., age 75, of Thomasville, NC, formerly of Mabscott, WV, passed away at his home on Friday, December 6, 2013.

Born on August 11, 1938, at Fireco, he was the son of the late Harry Wilburn Smith and Mary Elizabeth Hodge Smith.

Harry was the owner of Harry’s Appliance Sales and Repairs business in Thomasville, NC, for 35 years. He loved the challenge of fixing appliances.

Harry served in the United States Marine Corps.

Harry and his wife Ann loved to travel. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna L. Lilly Smith; sister Mary Moore; brothers, Bobby Ray, Jimmy and Buster Smith; stepson Donald Lilly; and 2 grandsons Ryan Alan Staffard and Michael Mahan, and one granddaughter Donna Diane Mahan.

Survivors include his daughters, Leson Smith and her husband Bob of Clearwater, Florida; Linda Stafford and her husband Randall of Maben, WV; stepdaughter Donna Smith and her husband Jimmy of Thomasville, NC; Three sisters, Lucille Connell and her husband Harold of Versailles, Indiana, Rosie Lindsey of Mabscott, and Betty Smith and her husband Thurman of Letart, WV. A brother, Wilburn Smith of White Oak, WV.

Fourteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; God-Father to Michael Lindsey, and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Church of God Family Worship Center, 224 Pinewood Drive, Beckley, WV, on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jesse Farley and Pastor Stacy Dingess officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park at 1915 Harper Road, Beckley. Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Tuesday.

Maurice Hanes Smith Jr.

Maurice Hanes Smith Jr., age 77, of Beckley, passed away December 7, 2013, at 6:23 p.m. Hanes, as he was known, was born to Maurice Hanes Smith Sr. and Elsie Kerns Smith of Pax, W.Va., on December 26, 1935.

His wife of 32 years, Patricia Nichols Smith had a wonderful life antiquing and collecting. Hanes has one son, Ronald Gray Smith and wife Jeanette of Shady Spring; one grandson, Joshua of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, Rusty Smith of Beckley, Bill Smith and his wife Christine of Mabscott and Jack Smith of Florida; one sister, Sue and husband Bill of Elyria, Ohio; two granddaughters, Heather Nichole Nichols of Raleigh, N.C., and Sommer Kunkle of Beckley; two stepsons, George David Nichols and Ernest Nichols Jr.; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Hanes proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He loved to play cards with the guys at the Moose Lodge. He leaves many friends and his best friend Lucky, his puppy, who will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home with Dr. Rick Metrick officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ed Byrnes, Johnnie Michaels, Rick Williams and Mike Sutyak.

Rodney N. Smith

LOOKOUT — Rodney N. Smith, 59, of Lookout, passed away Friday morning, December 6th, 2013.

Born September 27, 1954, son of the late Clarence and Garnette Smith. He was preceded in death by his daughter Miranda Smith McDonald.

Mr. Smith leaves behind his wife Marie Ann Kincaid Smith and daughter Tori Smith Baines and sons-in-law, Jeff Baines and Shane McDonald; sister-in-law, Toby Oliver; niece Tina Mettler and sisters in life Linda Petry and Regina Samuels. Surviving grandchildren are Justin Shipp, Kaelie, Tyler and Bethany Withrow, Gabby Smith, Trenton, Timothy, Thomas and Shane O McDonald. Also surviving three great-grandchildren.

Rodney was a coal miner, farmer, hunter, fisherman, carpenter and best friend to many. He was known as having a kind heart and advocate of animal rights rescue.

He will be loved and missed by all.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted.

Timothy Wayne Thomas

Timothy Wayne Thomas, 54, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013, at home.

Born on January 22, 1959, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Rupert and Shelma Foster Thomas.

Mr. Thomas attended Gatewood Church of God.

He is survived by his son, Wayne Thomas; daughter, Telina Humphrey; two brothers, James (Dreama) Thomas and Forrest (Denise) Thomas; sister, Ruth Ann (Fred) Ferrese; grandchildren, Allen Humphrey, Aiden Humphrey, Camryn Thomas, and Kailyn Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Morris Nutter officiating. Burial will follow at Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Carl White, 65, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013.

Lonnie ‘Ralph’ White

OAK HILL — Lonnie “Ralph” White, 71, of Oak Hill, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.

Born July 6, 1942, in Gatewood, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Ellen (Sharp) White.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Janie White, Fern Turner and Edith Phelps and two beloved grandsons, Seth White and Hunter Feltner.

Ralph was a faithful member of Crossroads Apostolic Church. He was an avid gardener and outdoorsman, but mostly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 50 years, Dreama (Waddell) White; children, Sherry Coffelt, Terry White and wife Rachel, Mike White and wife Theresa, Tammy Feltner and husband Chris, and David White; beloved grandchildren Destiny Rader, Kristen White, Tyler White, Mya White, Holly Feltner, Hannah Feltner and Haylee Feltner; siblings, Imogene Wills, Wanda Lilly and Ron White; sister-in-law, Delma Vannatter; and last, but certainly not least, his pets, Tinkerbell and Munchie.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 13, 2013, at Crossroads Apostolic Church with Pastor Jimmy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Friends may visit with family at the church from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday evening.

Wanda Yvonne White

Wanda Yvonne White, 78, of Beckley, formerly of Mullens, WV, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 7, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

She was born on March 19, 1935, to the late Raymond Ray Johnson and Lucille Belle Fox Johnson.

She was a beautician and owned and operated her own salon, Wyoming Beauty Salon in Mullens, WV, for 24 years.

She was a member of the BETA SIGMA PHI Sorority for 45 years. Wanda was very active in her sorority and met many lifelong friends that she cherished.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis June Johnson, Barbara Williams, Helen Ratliff, and a brother Roger Johnson.

Wanda is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Harold Owen White of Beckley, WV, her daughter Kim White, at home, who was by her side; son and daughter-in-law Greg White and Donna Slayton of Charleston, son and daughter-in-law Brad White and Lisa Samples White of Charleston, grandson Hunter White, granddaughters Alexa, Bria and Braelyn White of Charleston; sisters, Betty Graham of Mullens, WV, and Patty Bard of Westerville, OH. She is also survived by many caring relatives and friends.

Wanda White was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She devoted her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She took pride in family traditions, hosting a Christmas Breakfast every year, where she would cook her famous Ham and Gravy for her entire extended family to enjoy. She loved to bake and always took on the challenge to try a new recipe.

A tribute to the life of Wanda White will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, with Pastor Roger Adams officiating.  Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Princeton, WV.
