James Michael Roberts

GREENBRIER COUNTY — James Michael Roberts, 74, died at home following a prolonged illness on October 6, 2012.

He was born in Coffeeville, Kan., on September 9, 1938, the only son of the late Della and O R Roberts.

He was a graduate of Englewood High School in Englewood, Colorado; he attended the University of Colorado and was a graduate of the University Of Wyoming School Of Law. After graduating he worked for the State of Wyoming in the office of the Attorney General.  He received an LLM degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1963 and began teaching at the Columbia School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1967 he received a Dupont fellowship to continue graduate legal study at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. After attending UVA, he was on the law facility at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota, for a year.

At Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Beckley, W.Va., on September 27, 1969, he married Mary Sue Philpott of Beckley. Following their marriage they moved to Denver, Colorado. In Denver he worked for the federal government as regional director of legal services and then in private law practice. In 1980 he moved to Loveland, Colorado, continuing his legal profession. In Loveland he served on the planning commission and library board. He was a Gideon and a member of All Saints Episcopal Church. He was active in the Republican Club and a member of Rotary. He held a private pilot’s license.

In 1990 he was honored to be elected to the Colorado legislature. He loved his time as a lawmaker and served with distinction. After his retirement in 1999 he moved to Greenbrier County and enjoyed life to the fullest in West Virginia. He was an avid reader with a keen interest in history, politics, astronomy and aviation. He enjoyed raising chickens and Cotswold Sheep and was especially fond of his dogs.

He was a kind and loving son, husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue, three children and their families. They are Ashley and Kevin McNamara and sons James and William of Clear Creek Canyon, Colorado, Jay and Irit Roberts of Denver and Andrew and Alice Roberts of Hollywood, California.

Cremation has been conducted with a private memorial to follow at a later date.
