Dakota Grayson Becker

Dakota Grayson Becker, stillborn infant son of Jeffrey Allen Becker Jr. and Holly Christine Vanderlaan TaBelle of Stanaford, was dead at birth Monday, May 13, 2013.

A private graveside service was Saturday, May 18, at the Jennings Cemetery near Odd.

Arrangements are by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring.



Bishop George W. Bostic

Bishop George W. Bostic, 87, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born February 2, 1926, in Union, W.Va., a son to the late James Edgar Bostic and Dolly Mae Canterbury Bostic.

Mr. Bostic was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He held positions as a mechanic and also a school bus driver for many years. He owned and operated Bostic Transmission in Beckley for years. He also was a pastor for many churches in West Virginia and was an Ordained Bishop and is a proud member of the Sophia Church of God. Mr. Bostic also served our country in the United States Navy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sons, Danny and Stephen Bostic; brother, Edgar Herford Bostic; and sisters, Frances and Mildred Dowdy.

Those surviving include his loving wife of 69 years, Mrs. Katherine E. Canterbury Bostic; son, James W. Bostic and wife Phyllis of Beckley; daughter, Virginia Ann Maynor of Crab Orchard; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; also a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other family.

Services to celebrate the life of Bishop George Bostic will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Sophia Church of God with Bishop James W. Bostic, Bishop F.D. Sexton, and Bishop Wayne Wicker officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Prosperity with the American Legion Honor Guard Post 32 conducting military graveside rites.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

A visitation was held on Saturday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Sophia Church of God.

Mary Callahan, 79, of Beckley, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013.

Willard ‘Bill’ Cochran

Willard (Bill) Cochran of Eccles, WV, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at CAMC-Memorial Hospital, Charleston, WV, after a long illness at the age of 57.

Born June 7, 1955, in Monroe, Michigan, he was the son of the late George G. and Audrey Ruth Cochran.

Bill, also known as Vern, was a Master Mechanic at Vecellio and Grogan and traveled the Eastern Seaboard with his job that he loved from 1989-2002. He enjoyed playing his guitar, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a West Virginia Mountaineer Football Fan, and didn’t miss a game! He shall also be remembered through his classic rock group with wife Betty Ann, Kippy Fortner, Billy Bishop, and Little Fonus Murdock that led him to playing gospel music later in life at the Eccles Pentecostal Holiness Church in Eccles and surrounding churches. Mr. Cochran was also known as Coach Cochran while leading Eccles Elementary basketball team to championship. He was an awesome daddy, husband, grandfather, and brother who loved to joke and make others laugh. He will be sadly missed by many! Even though the body is gone, the memory shall live on forever!

Bill was preceded in death by an infant brother, and many uncles, aunts, and cousins, as well as his parents George G. Cochran and Audrey Ruth (Birchfield) Cochran.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Betty Ann Cochran; two daughters and three grandchildren: Becky Richmond of Eccles and her sons Jerry Austin Lee and William Cole; Kimberly and husband Jonathan Pettry of Beckley and their daughter Savannah Brooke; two brothers Gordon Dale Cochran and wife Janie of Eccles, Ronnie Cochran and wife Mary of Va.; sister Carol and her husband Jerry Phillips of Va.; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Visitations will be on Monday, May 20, 2013, at Melton Mortuary, Harper Road, Beckley, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. and continue to Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, where he will rest in peace next to his mother and father.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Pettry, Donald (Buddha) Cochran, Ronnie Cochran, Kenny Kuhn, Randy Taylor, and Josh Proffitt.

Bonnie Lou Collins

GILBERT — Bonnie Lou Collins, 70, of Gilbert, died Friday, May 17, 2013.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Rev. Diamond Carter officiating. Burial will be in Browning Lester Cemetery, Spice Creek, Verner. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the funeral home.

Delphia Goodson

On Thursday, May 16th, 2013, after a long and good life, Delphia Goodson of Florida Avenue passed away at the Pine Lodge Nursing Home. She was in her 95th year.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, Delphia Loving Richmond was born on Jan. 22nd, 1918, at Pear. Her parents were Samuel and Eunice Buckland Richmond.

A longtime resident of Florida Avenue, Delphia was married to the late Okey Goodson. To this union were born five children, Jimmie who has preceded her in death and Shelby, Roger, Stella and Ruby who will forever cherish her memory.

There are five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Committal services will be Monday, May 20th, at 3 p.m. at the Sunset Memorial Park. Pastor Bill Parker will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary. Those wishing to attend the committal services are asked to meet at the mortuary by 2:30 p.m.

Carrol Justus Jr.

OCEANA — Carrol Justus, Jr., 61, of Oceana, WV, passed away on May 15, 2013, at his home, Kopperston, WV.

He was born January 24, 1952, in Baileysville, WV, a son of the late Carrol and Lettie Blankenship Justus, Jr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters Creith Lane, and Truebee McGraw; a brother Harless Justus; and a stepdaughter Lisa Blackburn.

He was a truck driver.

Survivors include two sons Dwight Justus of Kopperston, and Cody Justus of Kopperston; a stepdaughter Brenda Reed of Pineville; stepgranddaughters Jamie Short, Kayla Ritchie and Brittany Ritchie all of Oceana; a stepgreat-granddaughter Tiona Short of Oceana; five sisters Gertrude Hurley of Brenton, Inez Smith of Cedar Creek, Nancy Hawks of Brenton, Imogene Short of Brenton and Dreama Lester of Beckley; two brothers Vernor Justus of Brenton, and Frankie Justus of Kopperston; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV. He will be laid to rest in Cook Cemetery, Lynco, WV. Rev. Larry Lafferty

MULLENS — Rev. Larry David Lafferty, 60, of Mullens passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, at his home after a short illness.

Born February 15, 1953, in Mullens, WV, he was the son of the late Howard and Peggy Broyles Lafferty.

Larry graduated from Mullens High School in 1970. He was elected into the Hall of Fame on August 18, 1990. Larry was a coal miner for 18 years at Eastern Coal. After leaving the coal mines he was called to the ministry in 1987. He received his Bachelor of Theology and was ordained into the Wesleyan Church in 1989. Larry pastored the Cuzzart Wesleyan Church in Bruceton Mills, WV, and the Mullens Wesleyan Church in Mullens, WV, until his death. After his love for his church and family he enjoyed hunting, fishing and football.

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by two sisters, Tamela Lafferty Cline and Robin Lafferty Runion.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 38 years, Teresa Lafferty; two sons, Larry Lafferty Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Eric Lafferty and his wife, Tabitha, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two daughters, Christy Lafferty Salters of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Kim Lafferty Cummings of Lexington, Va.; two sisters, Donna Lafferty Campbell and her husband, Billy, and Brenda Lafferty McKinney both of Yadkinville, NC; one brother, Wesley Lafferty and Mindy of Flat Top, WV; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be at 12 noon Monday, May 20, 2013, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with the District Superintendent Rev. Gregory Reynolds, Rev. Robert W. (Bob) Phaup and Doug Thorn officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be members of the Wyoming East Football Team.

Rodney Charles Shrewsbury

Rodney Charles Shrewsbury, age 64, of Glen Morgan, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, following a short battle with cancer.

He was born October 25, 1948, in Beckley. He was the son of the late Paris Shrewsbury and Myrtle Shaw Shrewsbury.

Rodney was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam era and also a graduate of Shady Spring High School class of 1966. He enjoyed hunting, meeting friends at the shooting matches, and reloading gun shells. He loved the West Virginia Mountains.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include his children, Tina Sakall and her fiancé, James Minor II of Beckley, and Shawn Shrewsbury and wife Tammy of Beckley; brother, Bill Shrewsbury of Glen Morgan; four grandchildren, Kayla Davis of Adrian, MI, Brett Davis of Beckley, Tori and Madelyn Shrewsbury of Beckley; nephew, Robbie Shrewsbury and wife Carrie of Hinton; niece, Christy Shrewsbury of Albuquerque, NM; his mother-in-law, Norma Richmond; and his extended family, Ellen Walker, Don Kemper, Jeanne and David Shrewsbery, Patrick and Violet Richmond, Frances and Eric Lilly, John and Kim Richmond, Leigh and Dave Prince and their families.

He will be sadly missed by Charlie and Joann Richmond, Bent Mountain Shooting Match friends, and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and family.

In keeping with Rodney’s wishes he was cremated,

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at the Open Door Church in Shady Spring, with Rev. Don Kelly officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. the same evening at the church.

Iris Gail Waid Stidom

MARFRANCE — Iris Gail Waid Stidom, 75, of Marfrance, WV, was called home Thursday, May 16, 2013, after an enduring illness at home.

Born August 8, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Grace O’Dell Waid.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She found her joys of life in through her grandchildren. She was an angel in life and now in afterlife.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Grace, husband Charles L Stidom, Sr., a son Michael Lake Stidom, grandsons Adam Charles Adkins and Brendon Michael Fown, and Charles “C W” Stidom, brothers John, Lewis, and Lester Waid.

She is survived and dearly missed by Daughter, Twila and her husband Randall “Son,” and their children; James and Jody MacFarlane of Jacksonville, Fla., and their children Elaina, Jacob, Tabitha; granddaughter Ragen and husband Danny Field and their children Olivia, Alex, Isaiah; granddaughter Samantha Adkins and her Sons Elijah and Bentley, grandson Luke Adkins and his son Landen. Sons: Carson Stidom of Fresno, CA, Rodney and wife Chris of KY, and their children Catie, Alden, Harrison. Son Charles Stidom, Jr., “Chuck” of Huntington, and his children Lanea, Chris, Noka, and Brandy. Daughter Twana Lively of Tioga and her children Aaron Fown and his daughter Madison, Mac Fown and his children Tristion, Kaden, Trinidy, MacKenzie. Logan Brown. Daughter Kyndle Stidom and her daughter Isabaella.

Brothers: Leonard and wife Shelia of Marfrance, Carl “Buck” and wife Alice of Lewisburg, Richard and wife Jenny Waid of Maryland.

Sisters: Bobby Ann Legg and husband Robert of Orient Hill, Sharon Macallister and husband Paul of Alderson, Ilene Jackson and husband James of Hurricane.

She was a beautiful person inside and out. Those who have been blessed enough to have had the privilege of knowing her know that she will truly be missed by all, and the heavens have gained one of the most beautiful angels this world had to offer.

PETERSBURG — Linda Karen (Ward) Tenney, 66, of Petersburg, formerly of Craigsville, died Friday, May 17, 2013.
