KEYROCK — Opal McCoy Brooks, 71, of Keyrock, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

DRENNEN — Jodie Lynn Foster, 37, of Drennen, died Monday, April 29, 2013.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013, in the Bethel United Methodist Church at Poe, with Pastor Phil Hickman and Pastor Brad Blanchard officiating. Burial will follow in the Branham Cemetery at Enon.

Walter ‘Poodle’ Hellems

MOUNT NEBO — Walter “Poodle” Hellems, 80, of Snow Hill Road, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Shirley Holcomb

ORIENT HILL — Shirley Holcomb, 68, of Orient Hill, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2013, at his home, following a long illness.

Born June 13, 1944, at Marfrance, he was the son of the late Homer A. and Minnie Dale Pierson Holcomb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Arnetta Christine Goins Holcomb; a son, Henry Holcomb; a sister, Lucille Wildman; and three brothers, Robert  and James Talbert and Ernie Holcomb.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Alley (Kevin) of Crawley, Norma Hall (Robbie) of Rainelle, and Cindy Lowe (Robert) of Elizabeth, W.Va.; two sons, Everette Holcomb (Candy) of Orient Hill and Michael Snead of Quinwood; three sisters, Kathleen Dick of Richwood, June Smith of Hines, and Ruby Craft of Rupert; and 11 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friend may call one half hour prior to the service at the cemetery.

William Eugene Jenkins

HILLIARD, Ohio — William Eugene Jenkins, 94, a native of Leon, W.Va., passed away Friday, April 26, 2013

Family received friends Sunday, April 28, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Tidd Funeral Home, 5265 Norwich St., Hilliard, OH 43026.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Russell Jenkins Cemetery in Cranberry Ridge, W.Va., with Jason Jones officiating.

Nelva L. Large

IROQUOIS — Nelva Louise Aleshire Large, 80, of Iroquois, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family following a long illness.

,Born February 19, 1933 at Logan, she was the daughter of the late John N. and Lula E. (Strickland) Aleshire.

Louise was a homemaker and attended the Charity Baptist Church in Mullens. She enjoyed cooking and was famous for her homemade biscuits, she loved planting and tending to her flowers, and she also got great enjoyment and comfort out of gospel music and loved to sing.

When we pause to remember Louise we shall always remember her love for her family, church family, and her friends who she loved dearly.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Sue Byler; and a brother, Ray E. Aleshire.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 60 years, Richard L. Large; two daughters, Treasa Lane and her husband, David of Barkers Ridge  and Diana Franklin and her husband, Todd of Mullens; three sons, Richard G. Large and his wife, Sheilah, Roger D. Large and his wife, Angela of Allen Junction, and Dennis H. Large and his wife, Terry of Itmann; two sisters, Margret Coyle and her husband, Sam of Brandenberg, Ky. and Patricia Hatfield of South Carolina; three brothers, Harold Aleshire, Don Aleshire and his wife, Barbara, and John Aleshire and his wife, Jane, all of Brandenberg, Ky.; 12 grandchildren, Tracy, Paul, Amber, Emily, Justin, Candasce, Kaylee, D.J., Kelli, Kasey, Steven, and Jeremy; six great grandchildren, Kyle, Dawson, Ryan, Kate, Hannah, and Emerson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry England and Rev. Dalley Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Godby, W.Va.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

SAULSVILLE — Sandra K. May, 63, of Saulsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 29, 2013.

Born April 4, 1950, in Welch, W.Va., Sandra was a daughter of the late Clarence and Hazel King Clay.

Sandra loved to travel and cook. She loved her grandchildren and she truly loved her boys.

Sandra was a 1968 graduate of Glen Rogers High School; she attended Beckley College and the LPN Program at Wyoming County Vocational Technical Center. She worked as a LPN for 13 years at the VA Medical Center in Beckley. She dearly loved her job. Sandra was a longtime member of the Saulsville Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Jeremiah James May and Joshua Dale May; grandchildren, Gabriel James May and Isabella Grace May; sister, Linda Hill and husband Jerry of Saulsville; niece, Phillina Breckenridge and husband Charles; nephew, Phillip Hill and wife Christina; great-nephew, Eli Breckenridge; great-niece, Jenna Hill.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at the Saulsville Baptist Church with Rev. Bryce Phillips and Pastor Michael Knotts officiating. Burial will follow at Clay Cemetery in Saulsville.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

Donna Carol Perdue

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Donna Carol Perdue, age 57, of 1704 Franklin Street, Bluefield, died on Monday, April 29, 2013, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born on February 7, 1956, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late William Elcie and Betty Jo McComas.

She had lived in Bluefield for the past 10 years. She had worked at the Princeton Wal-Mart for the past 13 years. She was a member of the Bluefield Moose Lodge and was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Perdue.

Survivors include a special friend,  Donald Lockhart of Bluefield, W.Va.; and a brother, Michael McComas of Beckley.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, with Pastor Dean Adams officiating. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Mausoleum in Bluewell,  where her family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Wayne Redden

MEADOW BRIDGE — Charles Wayne Redden, 54, of Meadow Bridge, passed away early Sunday morning, April 28, 2013, at his home on Beelick Knob, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 4, 1958, at Hinton, he was the son of Kirby and Carol Huffman Redden.

Charles was a self-employed mason by trade, and had also worked in the coal mines.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Holly Marie Patterson Redden of Meadow Bridge; three sons, Coalby Wayne Redden (wife, Samantha) of Layland, Travis Kirby Redden of Meadow Bridge, and Bryan MacKenzie Redden of Meadow Bridge; a sister, Debbie McDowelle of Charleston; three brothers, Kirby Redden Jr. of Surveyor, David Eugene Redden of Meadow Bridge and Stewart Van Redden of Meadow Bridge; and two granddaughters, Kensley and Karlee Redden.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel of Rainelle, with Pastor Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Darrell E. Skaggs

God has chosen another one of his angels, Darrell Eugene Skaggs, 65, of  Dry Creek, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Raleigh Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center at Daniels, after a long illness with Renal Failure, Cancer, and Diabetes.

Darrell was born at Dry Creek, on September 14, 1947, to his parents the late Thomas “Bob” Skaggs  and Georgia Gunnoe Skaggs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clouny and Lucy Skaggs, Oatie and Nan Gunnoe, and his brother, Jackie on April 7, 2013, and several aunts, uncles and many friends.

Survivors are his sister, Mrs. Drema (Dean)  Bradford of Rock Creek, brothers, Donald Skaggs of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Robert (Anna) Skaggs of Dry Creek, Delbert (Judy) Gunnoe of Rock Creek,  Dean (Nina Sissy) Skaggs of Griffisville, W.Va. and Jackie’s widow Shirley Davis of Rock Creek.

Darrell was a great uncle to Travis, Jason, Mark, Oatie, Nicole, Jackie, Jody, Bridgette, Tina, Lisa, Thaddeus, Amanda, Missy, Marie, and all their families.

Darrell went to Marsh Fork High School at Montcoal, W.Va. Darrell got to do a few things in his life that he really enjoyed. He picked Cotton, Tabacco, and went to the Job Corps. Darrell loved to sit on his porch, and sit in his yard with his friends, chewing his Tabacco, smoking his pipe, and telling tall tales. On Friday’s he loved to ride the bus to Pettus Senior Citizen Center, and be with his friends there, playing Bingo. While being at the Raleigh Center he had several great friends, Charlie Sizemore she was always helping doing things for Darrell, and Wesley Summers who was Darrell’s roommate and best friend. Darrell was a special person who everyone loved. He never met a stranger. Darrell received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in February 2012.

The family would like to say a special thanks to Raleigh Center and staff of Jan Care Transport Service Drivers, Ida Miller, Karri Owens, and Dennis Ramsey, and all the Doctors that he had,

Service will be 12 noon on Friday, May 3rd, 2013, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Danny Gilfilen officiating. Singers will be Norma Gunnoe and Danny Gilfilen. Burial will follow in Pettry Cemetery at Dry Creek.

Pallbearers will be Mark Skaggs, Travis and Jason Bradford, Amanda O’Neal, Jerry Jarrell. Honorary pallbearers will be David Howell, Quincy Asbury, Randy Ellis, Raymond Pettry, Dale Alderman, Danny Alderman, Paul Gunnoe and Phillip Bone.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Betty Lee Maxey Swann, 71, a native of Beaver,  passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013.

Edith Mae Tucker

Edith Mae Tucker, 78, of Stickney, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

She was born on June 27, 1934, at Montcoal, W.Va., a daughter of the late Martha and Elmer Reed.

She was a member of the Stickney Community Church, Stickney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Tucker; sister, Oleta Miller; brothers, Joe Bradley and Roger Reed and grandparents, Al and Lizzy Bonds. 

She is survived by her loving husband, Lee Tucker; sons, Terry (Ruth) Tucker of Rock Creek, Marty (Tammy) Tucker of Beckley; brothers, Gary (Janie) Reed of Glen Daniel and Donnis Reed of N.C.; sisters, Margaret (Dave) Clay of Shady Spring, Elizabeth Erwin of N.C., Janet Gunnoe of N.C.; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Julie Tolliver, Lisa Smith, Kelli Tolliver, Amanda (George) Hill, Jeff Tucker, Tonya (Nathan) Williams, Stephanie (Chris) Hartsell, Justin (Rachel) Tucker; great grandchildren, Jordan Owens, Josh Griffy, Tristin Dickerson, Jayden Dickerson, Kelsie Hill, Carleigh Tucker, Logan Williams, Dalton Williams, Easton Williams, Emily Tucker.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Khanna and staff at the Raleigh Regional Cancer Center.

Ruth Louise Wilkerson

OAK HILL — Mrs. Ruth Louise Wilkerson, 89, of Oak Hill, died Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born January 27,1924 in Kimberly, WV, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Daniel Johnson and Ardela “Bertha” Brydie Johnson.

Mrs. Wilkerson was a member of First Baptist Church Harlem Heights, Harlem Heights, W.Va. She was a cook and homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouse, Ollie B. Wilkerson, son, Earl Benjamin Wilkerson, daughter, Brenda J. Wilkerson, grandson, Schuyler B. Hickman II, brothers, Clemmon Johnson, Elvin Johnson, George Johnson, Orlanda Johnson, and sister, Bertha Jackson.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are: her children, Regina Yolanda Young, Toni Marie Walker, Geneva Mae Robinson, Louise Kay Nelson, and Jacqueline Carol Hickman, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 2, 2013, at First Baptist Church Harlem Heights, 416 Broadway Avenue, Oak Hill, with Rev. Paul Baker and Rev. Shannon Robinson officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
