James Walter ‘Jimmy’ Alexander II

OAK HILL — James Walter “Jimmy” Alexander II, 66, of Oak Hill, died on Friday, March 22, 2013, at his home.

Born April 15, 1946, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late James Walter and Anne Deaner Alexander.

Jimmy was a 1964 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill and member of the OHH/CHS Alumni Association, past member of the Board of Directors and contributor to the Reunion Log with his writings about Oak Hill. A talented artist, it was well known that if you needed a sign or a document lettered or drawn, Jimmy was the one to ask.

He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and was employed as a funeral director and embalmer for Tyree Funeral Home, Inc., where he had been Manager since 1983. He was a member of the WV Funeral Directors Association.

Jimmy was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church and attended the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.

He was a member and past Master of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M.; member of Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M.; Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 K.T. and past Patron for Oak Hill O.E.S. No. 107.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Lynn Portman Alexander, one son, Robert Joseph Alexander of Oak Hill, a daughter, Michelle Dawn Alexander of Kingsport, Tenn., and sister, Irene Neely of Oak Hill.

He is also survived by a grandson Shawn Alexander, an aunt, Grace Carter, a nephew, and several nieces, and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Rev. David Sneed and Pastor Dave Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill, with Masonic graveside rites by Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Gavin Michael Bailey

CRAIGSVILLE — Gavin Michael Bailey, 17-month-old son of Travis and Cassandra Smith Bailey of Craigsville, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in the White Funeral Home at Summersville, with Pastor Eddie Groves officiating. Interment will follow in the Bailey family Cemetery on Woodbine Road. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Patricia Ann Blake

HINES — Patricia Ann Blake, 63, of Hines, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013.

Collett Cook

DURHAM, N.C. — Collett Cook, 99, of Durham, formerly of Pineville, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013.

Frederick Constantine Corey

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Frederick Constantine Corey, 90, died at his home in Santa Barbara, on March 14, 2013.

He was born in Beckley, W.Va., in 1922. Fred met Dorothy Stauff Corey while they were attending Carnegie Mellon University, to whom he was married until her death in 1995 (49 years). His schooling was interrupted when he served in the Army Signal Corps in WWII. He enlisted as a private and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He later served in the Korean War as an Army Aviator. He completed his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University.

Fred, an aerospace engineer, worked at Chance Vaught, later at Autonetics and Northrop Grumman, among others. He was responsible for avionics on the F-5, F-20, and YF-17 fighter aircraft and classified missile programs. He also taught engineering courses at UCLA and USC. Retiring in 1988, Fred worked as a consultant and taught classes at Santa Barbara City College. He was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, and the Men’s Garden Club of Santa Barbara.

Fred is survived by his four children: Carolyn, Christopher, Marilyn, and Claire; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his brother Constantine Corey of Charlotte, N.C., and sister, Vivian White of Savannah, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Zegeer, Kaleel (Edna) Jamison, Aileen Corey, and a grandson, Jarrod S. Cochran.

He enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, traveling, and instructing others in computer operation. His memory lives on in the important contribution he made to the aerospace industry and in the hearts of his friends and family.

Memorial services will be held at Valle Verde in Santa Barbara on Thursday, March 28, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute of Santa Barbara, the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara, The United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and/or the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara.

Dora Cousin

Mrs. Dora Cousin, 75, of Beckley, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, following a long illness.

Born September 28, 1937, in Lanark, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Richard and Mary Sue Daniels Moore.

Mrs. Cousin was a member of Second Baptist Church, Beckley, and a retired dietitian.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Cousin; one brother, Abner; two sisters, Mary and Connie; and one grandson, Nathaniel Jr.

Those left to cherish precious memories are daughters, Doreen Moore and Annette (Henry) Burks, both of Lanark, WV; brother, James (Janie) Moore of Lanark, WV; sisters, Ollie Moore, and Joann Poole, both of Lanark, WV, Carolyn Crider of Brooklyn, NC, Betty Hughes of Cambria Heights, NY, and Patty Merritt of Durham, NC; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; special friends, Dot, Dee Dee, and Thelma Jean; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 12 noon Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley, with Rev. Nathaniel Carey and Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

PETERSTOWN — Lula Katherine Crawford Dillion, 89, of Peterstown, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013.

RONCEVERTE — Eva June Dowdy, 78, of Ronceverte, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Ronceverte Christian Church, with Jason Thomas officiating. The family will receive their family and friends from noon until time of the service at the church. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg.

OCEANA — Leroy Dale Hatfield Jr., 32, of Shannon Mill Creek, formerly of Oceana, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013.

Edith Marie Jolly

Edith Marie Jolly, age 70, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, due to an automobile accident.

Born on June 17, 1942, at Affinity, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Sherman Earl Murphy and Kathleen Waters Murphy.

She was last employed as a school teacher in Englewood, Colorado, and was formerly employed by Phillip Morris Tobacco Company in Richmond, Va., as a data entry employee.

Mrs. Jolly loved her home and enjoyed her flower garden. She dearly loved her daughter Elizabeth Reese and her granddaughter Toni Rae Reese.

Mrs. Jolly had been a resident of the Pluto Road area for the past four years.

Survivors include her daughter Elizabeth Louise Reese and her husband Tony of Jumping Branch; Edith’s husband of 22 years, Thomas Jolly of Pluto Road, Shady Spring; grandchildren, Richard R. Reese, Richard L. Samples, Misty Ann Harvey, Billie Marie Crews, Toni Rae Reese, Jonathan Reese, and Lisa Wright; great-grandchildren, Sophia Rose Starcher, Richard Jake Samples, Rebecca Harvey, Matthew Cole, and Cheyenne Wright.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life of Edith Jolly on Friday, March 29, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev.  Danny Goins officiating. Burial will follow at the Flower Garden Memorial Cemetery at Jumping Branch. A private visitation will held for invited guests and family members on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Julian Caskel ‘Jabo’ Ward Jr.

OAK HILL — Julian Caskel “Jabo” Ward Jr., 60, of Oak Hill, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born October 6, 1952, at Erskine, W.Va., the son of the late Julian Caskel Ward Sr. and Margaret Ellen Ruff.

Jabo was an avid wrestling fan and former wrestler.

He was of the Baptist faith; a past member of the Shade Tree Car Club; and was a CB’er known as “Cold Turkey.”

Those left to cherish his memory include his children Vickie L. Trent, Danny R. Price, Crystal G. Ward, and Janette M. Hall; siblings Gene Ward, Lana Elder-Coleman, Jimmy Ward, Dale Ward, Cathy Hayes, Kenneth Ward, Ricky Ward, Patty Posey, and Jesse Ward; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday), with Rev. Bill Drennen and Rev. Jesse Parker officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military rites conducted by Oak Hill V.F.W. Post 3110.
