Bobby Dale Anderson

HINTON — Bobby Dale Anderson, 60, of 495 Stokes Drive, Hinton, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at his home.

Gary Delano Dement

Gary Delano Dement, 67, of Daniels, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at his residence.

Born December 22, 1945 in Sevierville, Tenn., he was the son of the late John Ellis and Olga Foxworth Dement.

Gary was a disabled veteran.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Troy Delano Dement and a brother, John Ellis Dement, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa Simms Dement; son, John Gary Dement and wife Erica of Staffordsville, VA; daughters, Tammy Vance and husband John of Jacksonville, NC, Rachael Harmon of Beckley, Alicia Adkins and husband Jason of Ghent; sister, Aleta Woods of Texas; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bob Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be John Dement, Jason Adkins, Gary Vance, Ray Jones and Mark Oxley.

Virginia Belle DiCiuccio

Virginia Belle DiCiuccio, age 92, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday March 19, 2013.

Born on April 26, 1920 in Hinton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Belle Lilly and Homer Lilly, and was reared by the late Adney and Lottie Meadows of Hinton.

Mrs. DiCiuccio was the former owner and operator with her husband of Andy’s Market and Greenhouse  in Sprague. She had also worked at Legal Aide, at the Mine Academy, the Prosecuting Attorney’s office, and Beckley Junior High School in an administrative role at the school.   

She was very active in several clubs in Beckley, including the Beckley Woman’s Club, the Beckley Garden Club, the Beckley Historical Society, the Democratic Women’s Club, and had served on the Board of Directors of the Lilly Reunion Association.

Mrs. DiCiuccio was a member of the Saint Francis deSales Catholic Church, where she was active in various groups at the church.

Mrs. DiCiuccio was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew DiCiuccio, and by a daughter, Patricia Ann Aliff.

Survivors include include two daughters, Jeanette Phillips of Columbus, Ohio and Mary Kathryn Endicott of Columbus, Ohio. Nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild are also surviving.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at the Saint Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Samuel Sacus as the Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may call at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

David Wayne Hargett

MARFRANCE — David Wayne Hargett, 54, of Marfrance, formerly of McRoss, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born December 16, 1958 in Union County, N.C., he was the son of the late Mary Fincher Hargett and Robert Ciero Hargett of Monroe, N.C.

David loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed North Carolina sports; was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and coached midget-league football. David was a cowboy and enjoyed bull-riding. His favorite saying was, “Cowboy up!”

In addition to his father, he is survived by his fiancé Tina Osborne of Marfrance; a stepdaughter Jennifer Adkins and husband H.L. of Quinwood; two stepsons Jason Wykle and J.J. Rhodes, both of Rainelle; a grandson, Houston Wayne “Little Man” Adkins; five brothers Robert, James, John and Richard, all of Monroe, N.C. and Ronald of Indian Trail, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with his brother Pastor Ronnie Hargett officiating. Burial will follow in the Puckett Cemetery at Crag.

Friends may call one hour before the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alan David Helbing

Alan David Helbing, age 53, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 18, 2013, at 204 Beaver Avenue, Beckley.

He was born on Jan. 25, 1960, in Seoul, Korea to his parents, Theodore and Kimberly.

He attended Western Kentucky University, General Motors Institute, Cleveland State, the University of Louisville and then graduated in 1983 from Tampa College with a degree in Computer Science.

His high school life was spent in various places where he made many great friends who credit him for keeping their communications constant. Many classmates from Ft. Knox High School in Kentucky and Taegu America High School at Camp Walker in Korea. Even after his father retired from the United States Army, Alan continued to enjoy many parts of the country leaving his mark in California, Connecticut, most of Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, and Texas. His greatest gift to all was that he enjoyed helping others, as he had a compassionate, accepting, fun-loving spirit that was infectious to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.

Alan was the oldest of 3. He will be remembered and missed by his loving parents Theodore and Kimberly Helbing, his sister and brother in-law Denise and Chandler Root, his daughter Grace Louise Helbing, his nephews Austin and Brendan Root as well as his dear friends Jack Toler, Carol Toler and William Brown of Beckley.

Alan is predeceased in death by his sister Terry Ann Helbing, grandparents Charles R. and Iola M. Helbing, aunt Susan Annette Helbing Dauer and uncle Charles R. Helbing Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at noon on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley. His Memorial Service will begin immediately after at 1 p.m.

Mary Alice Riley Hubbard

CHARLESTON — Mary Alice (Riley) Hubbard, 84, of Charleston, formerly of Keyser, and Whitesville, a native of Ridgeview, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013.

C. Cameron Lewis II

Charles Cameron “Cam” Lewis II, 70, of Daniels, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center, following a sudden illness.

Cam was born in Beckley, W.Va., Dec. 19, 1942, to the late Cam and Odessa Lewis.

Cam was happily married to Marie Newcomb-Lewis in April 2011.

Cam attended Woodrow Wilson High School with the class of 1960. He graduated from Augusta Military Academy in 1961. He attended Beckley and Morris Harvey colleges, and was a graduate of Bluefield State College with a degree in Criminal Justice.

Cam served as Director of the Enforcement Division for the West Virginia Division of Highways, Department of Transportation, from 1981-2002. He had previously served as Director of Safety Responsibility for the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. At one time, he operated his own company, C. Cameron Lewis, Trucking and Excavation. He was presently employed by Tammy Lynn Outdoor Advertising, of Bluefield.

An active and proud member of the Democratic Party, Cam formerly served as Chairman of the Raleigh County Democrat Executive Committee. He was a former elected member of the State Democrat Executive Committee, where he had served as Vice Chairman. Prior to being elected, he had served as Executive Director of the state committee.

Cam was a member of the Beckley Elks Lodge and had served on the Board of Trustees for many years as Chairman of the Board.

A lifelong member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, Cam was elected numerous times as an Elder, formerly was a Deacon and had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was formerly Moderator of the Session Personnel Committee, and presently served as clerk of the Session.

Cam was married for 32 years to the late Susan Lazenby Lewis. He was the proud father of Charles Cameron Lewis III, of Killeen, Texas; and Rachael L. Gibson, and husband Josh Gibson, of Durham, N.C. He was the proud grandfather of Suzana Kate Gibson, Leo Cameron Gibson, and Nora Caroline Gibson, all of Durham. He is also survived by special cousins Nancy Kittle, of Huntersville, N.C., Hal Lynne Micali, of Los Altos, Calif., Joan Groves, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Jimmy Bartlett, of Wilmington, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 22, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, and from 10 a.m. to noon, the time of funeral service, Saturday, March 23, at the church.

David LaVaughn Mason

On Saturday, March 16, 2013, at WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital, David LaVaughn Mason transitioned from earth to glory following a short-lived but courageous battle of lung cancer, in the comfort of his devoted mother, siblings and other family members who loved him.  

Born on June 14, 1948, in Washington, D.C., “Bro” was son of  Mrs. Ophelia Mason Motley Belcher of Beckley and the late David Vendon Mason.

Bro confessed a hope in Christ and was baptized at age 10 under the pastorate of the late Rev. Archie Johnson at Welcome Baptist Church.  In 1965, at age 16, he graduated from Stratton High School. He was a graduate of BeckleyCollege and furthered his studies at Morris Harvey and Antioch Colleges. He served in the United States Army earning the rank of sergeant, toured Korea, and served as a military policeman. Bro was a quiet, humble man and worked in the health care profession at Beckley and Raleigh General Hospitals. During his tenure at these hospitals, he touched many lives and was recognized for his outstanding service. After retiring in 2010, Bro enjoyed spending time with his older brother Ronnie. Visiting daily, they enjoyed watching sports and regularly having coffee at Starbucks.  

In addition to his mother, Bro leaves to cherish fond memories two daughters, Audrey Louise and Alicia Victoria Cowans; one son, Mark Cowans; mother of his children, Wanda Cowans; grandsons, David and Dilante, all of Washington, D.C.; brothers, Ronald (Cordelia) Mason of Beckley, Samuel (Mildred) Mason of Moreno Valley, CA, Frank (Kathy) Motley of Beckley, and Quincy A. Madison of Beckley; sisters, Victoria (Rodney) Davis of McLeansville, NC and Nancy (Gary) Carson of Beckley; a special cousin, Rev. Earl Jackson; an uncle, Thomas Miller, Sr.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and a kind and loving friend, Mrs. Bernadine Toler Tucker.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 Eighth St., with Bishop D. F. Allen and Rev. Thomas V. Moore presiding. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Ethel Bonlyn Pitzer

PETERSTOWN — Ethel Bonlyn Pitzer, age 98, of Peterstown, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Country View Assisted Living, Peterstown.

Born August 11, 1914, at Peterstown, she was the daughter of the late Ira Anderson and Fannie Florence Keffer Handy.

Ethel had worked from 1943 to 1962 as the Postmaster of the Lindside Post Office. She was a member of the Spruce Run Church of the Brethren and was a past member of the Peterstown Garden Club.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert H. Pitzer in 1983, two sisters, Golda Albert and Bernice Bane and two brothers, Robert “Bud” Handy, Leonard Handy.

Survivors include six sons, Tom Pitzer and wife Cedella of Pearisburg, VA, Gene Pitzer and wife Mary Lou of Fredericksburg, VA, Bill Pitzer and wife Patty of Salisbury, NC, Jerry Pitzer and wife Sandra of Peterstown, WV, Johnny Pitzer and wife Darla of Princeton, WV and Dennis Pitzer and wife Sharon of Peterstown, WV, ten grandchildren, Keith, Jeff, Tim, Stephen and Pete Pitzer, Valerie Wick, Mindy Pendergrass, Sherri Dobbins, Tony Roach and Jennifer Porterfield, twenty one great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, with Pastor Rodger Boothe and Pastor Dewey Broyles officiating. Burial will follow in the Orchard Cemetery, Ballard.
