Martha Esther Adkins

TURKEY CREEK — Martha Esther Adkins, 63, of Turkey Creek, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville. Burial will follow in Privett Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Edith Halsey Brooks

PINEVILLE — Edith Halsey Brooks, 92, of Pineville, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born February 16, 1921, at Otsego, she was the daughter of the late General Lee Halsey and Eugenia Meyers Halsey.

Edith was an active member of the Rock Castle Baptist Church. She greatly enjoyed working with the youth, especially at church camps. Edith enjoyed her 18 month s at the Bayberry Inn at Beckley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelley Brooks; two sons, Billy and Buddy Brooks; three brothers, Winford, Wilton and Rupurt Halsey; and two sisters, Rene Green and Thelma Teets.

Survivors include 2 Sons: Myron Brooks and his wife, Dorthea, of Fairdale, KY, and David Brooks and his wife, Pat, of Beckley, WV; 3 Daughters: Lena Christine Beymer and her husband, Ray, of Hinton, Barbara Mullins of Kernersville, NC, and Cheryl Morgan and her husband, Woody, of Baileysville; 2 Brothers: Drewie Halsey of Welch and Jim Halsey of Bluefield; 2 Sisters: June Baldwin of Nimitz and Phyliss Hightower of Roanoke, VA; 11 Grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at Rock Castle Baptist Church with the Rev. Evan Arkel officiating.

Burial will follow in the Bower Cemetery, Twin Falls.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Bowers Hospice House and the Bayberry Inn for the love and care given to Mrs. Brooks.

Thelma Bragg Chapman

MOUNT HOPE — Thelma Bragg Chapman, 86, of Mount Hope died Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.

Born August 2, 1926, at Ellison, she was a daughter of the late Basil and Daisy Barlow Bragg.

Thelma was a member of the Jumping Branch Gospel Tabernacle and a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by one sister, Stella Horton.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Harold Chapman, and one granddaughter, Sarah Paxton, both of Mt. Hope; three brothers, James Bragg and wife Maxine of Nimitz, Glen Bragg and wife Annie of Illinois and Roger Bragg and wife Jane of Jumping Branch; one sister, Virginia Stennett and husband Tom of Nimitz.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Tom Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from noon until time of services on Tuesday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Darrell Gene Clarkson

GAP MILLS — Darrell Gene Clarkson, 53, of Gap Mills, passed away Friday morning, May 24, 2013.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Crimson Springs Church at Zenith with the Rev. Jim Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at the Valley View Cemetery at Zenith. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

HILTON VILLAGE — Carl Bryan Cook, 49, of Hilton Village, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

Billy Ray Durham

Billy Ray Durham, age 32, of White Oak, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Born on September 17, 1980, in Beckley, he was the son of Billy C. Durham and Cynthia Susie Boothe Durham of White Oak.

Mr. Durham was a former auto body repairman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and motorcycle racing. He was a graduate from Shady Spring High School in 2000. Mr. Durham loved taking care of his dogs.

Other than his parents, survivors include his sister, Chandra Clark and her husband Boyd of Daniels, WV. One niece, Skylar O’Connor, two nephews, Kaine Durham, and Jaiden O’Connor.

Paternal grandparent, Lila Upchurch of Daniels, maternal Grandparent, Betty Boothe of White Oak.

Several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Raymond Upchurch, and Grant Boothe, by great-grandparents, Jess and Ratha Durham, Guy and Macy Basham.

Mr. Durham was also preceded in death by an aunt, Dorenda Meadows.

Funeral services will be conducted at the New Life Baptist Church at White Oak on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Rodney Allen officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday. Sgt. Jonathan Chad Ferris

Feb. 1, 1982 - Sept. 29, 2012

A memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery to honor the life of Sgt. Jonathan Chad Ferris on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 10 a.m.

Chad was born February 1, 1982, in Beckley, WV, the son of John C. Ferris of Hagerstown, MD, and Debra J. McClain Williams of Williamsport, MD.

Chad was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hagerstown, MD, having made a profession of faith at the age of 7.

After graduating from South Hagerstown High School, in June 2000, Chad entered the United States Marine Corps. He served in the 2nd battalion, 2nd Marine division, where he completed 2 tours of duty in Iraq, attaining the rank of sergeant in the infantry. Chad was completing his apprenticeship as an electrician with the IBEW Local 307.

Chad loved motorcycling. He owned 3 Harleys, and had been promoted to President of the Virginia Chapter of the Avengers Motorcycle Club. Chad also loved to hunt and fish, rock climb and raft. He pursued his passion for the great outdoors at every opportunity.

Chad was also a member of the American Legion, Clopper-Michael Post 10, Boonsboro, MD. Chad had expressed how much he enjoyed spending time with veterans, sharing their experiences.

Chad is survived by his son, Jonathan Cash Ferris, born January 21, 2013, and Cash’s mother, Krystal L Gale; sister, Holly J. Seitz, her husband Eric and their daughter Emma of Waucoma, IA; maternal grandmother Nancy D. McClain of Rochester, NH; and paternal grandparents Gene and Bobbie Ferris of Crab Orchard, WV; and his loyal dog, Gunner. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Holly H. McClain.

God provided Chad with a wealth of devoted family and friends. From grade school through his military deployments, and his apprenticeship, there were many who shared his journey. Chad valued and appreciated each and every one of them as an important part of his life.

Those planning to attend the memorial must arrive at Arlington National Cemetery before 9:30 a.m.



Elberta Delvira Gill

RAINELLE — Elberta Delvira Gill, 92, of Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, following a long illness.

She was born in Edmond, WV, on July 22, 1920, to the late William and Victoria Ramsey.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Winnie Steel, Maxine Higginbottom, Delvina Whitaker and Lucille Prater, her brothers: Woodville Ramsey, Basil Ramsey, Frank Ramsey and Luther Ramsey.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister-in-law, Mary Ramsey of Rainelle, her niece, Sandra and Bill Chapman of Fenwick, her great-nephew Joey of Fenwick, and a host of other nieces and nephews.

She was employed in the medical field as a nurse in Parkersburg, WV. She attended Salem Freewill Baptist Church of Oak Hill, WV, and Ansted Baptist Church of Ansted, WV.

Graveside services will be held at the Orient Hill Cemetery, Orient Hill, WV, on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at 1 p.m. Reverend John Wyatt will be officiating the services.

Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home of Rainelle will be conducting the services.



Peter Gorsky Sr.

Peter Gorsky, Sr., 81, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Born June 19, 1931, in Scranton, PA, to the late John and Mary Butch Gorsky.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Virginia Kopec Gorsky; two brothers, John Gurski from Bound Brook, NJ, and Joseph Gorsky from Old Bridge, NJ; and a sister, Madeline Bilanin from Linden, NJ.

Those left to cherish his memory include a sister, Irene Sworen of Pine Brook, NJ; a son, Peter J. Gorsky and wife, Patricia, of Beckley; a daughter, Deborah I. Quinn and husband, John, of Beckley;  5 grandchildren, Courtney Wilson and husband, Joshua, of Daniels, Bethany Quinn of Beckley, Elizabeth Raney and husband, Brian, of Beckley, Mary Crawford and husband, Terry, of Beckley, James Suddreth and wife, Megan, of Beckley; 7 great-grandchildren, Catelyn and Joshua Wilson, Bailey McIntruff, Lucas Raney, Lakyn and Lani Misch, and Kelsey Suddreth; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mr. Gorsky was a faithful member of Calvary Assembly of God, Beckley.

He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force in the Korean War from 1952 to 1955 as a Staff Sergeant. He was the owner of Stanaford Tire Shop from 1973 until 1985 and established WV License Service until he retired in 2006. He was employed by Breeze Corp, Ford Motor Company and General Motors all in New Jersey and Lee Norse Corp and an Agent for Peoples Life in Beckley.

A service to Celebrate the life of Peter Gorsky will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at Calvary Assembly of God, Beckley, with Pastor John K. Jordan officiating. Following the services Mr. Gorsky will be entombed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the church.

Cecil Lacy Grimmett Sr.

HINTON — Cecil Lacy Grimmett, Sr., 76, of Hinton, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home following a short illness.

Born October 10, 1936, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Frank and Lula Gill Grimmett.

Mr. Grimmett was a mechanic and dairy farmer. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

He was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Lacy Grimmett, Jr., one brother, Billy Grimmett, and five sisters, Rhoda Bennett, Betty Wallace, Thelma Ward, Joy Patterson and Nannie Baker.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Wilma Hawks Grimmett. Four sons, Kenneth Grimmett and wife Sara of Pembroke, VA, Baxter Grimmett and wife Roberta of Greenville, and Robert and Charlie Grimmett, both of Hinton. Two daughters, Nellie Ewing and husband Rick of Hilldale and Vickie Gill and husband John of Talcott. Eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews as well as an adopted son, Emery Gill, also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton. Friends may call from 12 p.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

RADFORD, Va. — Lucille V. Hollaway, 96, of Radford, Va., passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

Kenneth Ewing Lambert

JUMPING BRANCH — Kenneth Ewing Lambert, 74, of Jumping Branch passed into eternal peace at 4:57 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital in Hinton following a long illness.

Born December 14, 1938, in Owensboro, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William Houston and Anna Mae Hall Lambert.

Affectionately called Kenny, he worked over 47 years in the Carpenters & Joiners Union in the Washington, DC, area. In the field he was project manager for large contractors and department stores. In 1981, Kenny was elected financial agent for the Washington 132 local of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Kenny retired to Jumping Branch in 1996.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jo Amorosi, three brothers, Bill, David and James Lambert, stepson, Craig S. Humphries, and first wife, Bonnie Turner Lambert.

Survivors include his loving wife of 20 years, Janet Humphries Lambert. One daughter, Pamela Geary of Grand Rapids, MI. Stepdaughter, Brenda Via and husband Dale of Charles Town, WV. Stepsons, Stephen Turner and wife Kathy of Floyds Knob, IN, and David Humphries and wife Kim of Churchville, MD. One of ten children, Kenny is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Ann Markle and husband George of Middlesex, NJ, and Judy Smith and husband Larry of Jonesboro, AR. Three brothers, Donald Lambert and wife Nancy of Lexington, KY, Larry Lambert and wife Marilynn of Louisville, KY, and Clyde Wendell of Hollywood, FL. Two grandsons, J. Kyle Geary and Tyler Geary. Great-grandson, Jasper J. Geary. Stepgranddaughters, Carolynn Humphries and Alaina Via. Stepgrandsons, William Via and Garrett Humphries. Stepgreat-granddaughter, Bailee Marie Via. Kenny has a host of nieces and nephews and also a special sister-in-law, Shirley Lambert, and brother-in-law, Norman Amorosi. Kenny cherished his childhood friend, Chester “Lucky” Brown of Louisville, KY. Also close to his heart was his precious friend, Chris Dillon of Jumping Branch.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton with Father Rey Landicho as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Deeds Cemetery at Jumping Branch. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of departure for the funeral Mass at Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton. A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Chris Dillon, Joe Stanalonis, William Via, Dale Via, Steve Bennett and Ronnie Terry.

Tenna Inge Andersson Myles

MORGANTOWN — Tenna, who died on May 2, 2013, in Morgantown, was born on October 20, 1920, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Tenna was a daughter of the late Helga Agnite Eduard Andersson and Ernst Fredrik Andersson. Her name is engraved on the Immigrants’ Wall of Ellis Island, New York, where she and her family entered the United States in 1924. She became a naturalized citizen in 1946.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Joseph Harlan “Bus” Myles, Jr., May 16, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Arthur Lewis Cash, August 25, 1987.

Tenna is survived by daughter, Grethe Myles and her husband, Tom Witt, with whom she made her home. Also surviving are her daughter Catherine Cash of Tucson, AZ, granddaughters Amanda Cory Cash, Tucson, AZ, Hannah Catherine Cash, Burbank, CA; great-grandsons Myles Arthur, John Francis and Graham Alphonse Caldwell; daughter Christine Hasbrouck and her husband James Hasbrouck of Blackstone, VA, grandsons Shann Ryan White and his wife Amy White, and great-grandchildren Jacob Ryan, Joel Tate and Abigail Tenna White; Benjamin Kelsey White and wife Danielle White, great-granddaughters Tenna Kelsey and Adeline Renee White; and daughter Lisa Borkowski and her husband Gregory Borkowski, of Napoleon, OH, and granddaughters Andrea Rose and Sarah Noelle Borkowski.

Also surviving are stepgrandchildren Theodore “Ted” Hasbrouck and his daughters Alison and Willow Hasbrouck; and Sarah Hasbrouck Andrews and her children Madison Rodgers and Ethan Andrews.

Tenna was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Morgantown, West Virginia, where Pastor Gerald Kliner will conduct a service celebrating her life and faith at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22.  

Her ashes, contained in a hand-thrown urn created by her niece, Claudia Dunaway, of Burnsville, NC, will be interred next to her husband, and near several generations of the Myles family, at 5 p.m. Saturday, in the cemetery of Big Sewell Mountain Baptist Church, Route 60, Rainelle, WV.

Gifts of remembrance may be made to Big Sewell Mountain Baptist Church.

Funeral preparation was provided by Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown, with assistance of Wallace and Wallace of Rainelle.



Mary Ethelyn Wills Peterson

HANOVER, Md. — Mary Ethelyn Wills Peterson, 91, of Hanover, MD, formerly of Ghent, WV, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

Born January 24, 1922, in Beaver, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Johnson and Lottie Cooper Wills. Mary was a retired secretary for the WV State Department. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beckley and Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter #71. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell M. Peterson.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Peterson Hale and husband Michael Wayne Hale of Hanover, MD; son, Russell Malcolm Peterson, II, and wife April Johnson Peterson of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Matthew Thomas Hale, Bethany Grace Hale, Rachel Elizabeth Peterson, Joshua Johnson Peterson, Nicholas Alexander Peterson; sister, Anna Fowler of Bedford, VA; and a brother, Herbert Wills of Beaver, WV.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bob Stoddard officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home where Bethlehem Chapter #71 will hold an Eastern Star service at 12 p.m.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Anna Lee Spurlock

BEARDS FORK — Anna Lee Spurlock, age 77, of Beards Fork, WV, departed the world on Friday, May 24, 2013.

Anna was the daughter of the late Paul Howell and Lee Anna Coleman McMillion.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William A. “Buddy” Spurlock who passed away on May 29, 1997, and her brothers, Harold McMillion and Lovell McMillion.

Anna worked in dietary at Hidden Valley for 14 years. She was a loving grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all that knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Ann Hurley of Kincaid, WV, two sons, Kenny Lee Brown, Jr., and wife Jill of PA and Carlos Ray Spurlock and wife Debbie of Beards Fork, WV. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, WV, with Pastor Bob Vanfossen officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, May 26, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
